Start by finding out whether Netflix fails only in the Windows app or also in a browser or on another device. That simple comparison separates an app or Microsoft Store problem from an account, service, or network issue—and helps you avoid resetting or reinstalling anything unnecessarily.
These steps apply to the official Netflix app installed from Microsoft Store. If you use Netflix.com or a browser shortcut, jump to the browser checks.
Identify what is failing first
“Netflix is not working” can mean several different things: the app will not open, sign-in keeps looping, the catalog will not load, playback fails, or video buffers or appears black. Note the exact symptom and any Netflix error code before changing settings. An error code can point to a different cause than a launch failure; look it up in the Netflix error-code help page.

Use another device or browser as a comparison
- Try Netflix on a phone, TV, or another computer. If it fails on several devices, check service, account, and network causes before repairing Windows.
- Open Netflix.com in a supported browser on the same PC. If that works while the installed app fails, focus on the app and Microsoft Store.
- If neither the app nor browser works on this PC, but Netflix works elsewhere, investigate this PC’s network, date and time, Windows, display, or protected-media playback.
Check Netflix Help for service information and account guidance at Netflix Help Center. Do not assume there is an outage—or that there is not one—without checking.
Try the quick checks before changing app data
Restart Netflix and Windows
Close Netflix, reopen it, and test a title rather than stopping at the sign-in screen. If the problem persists, restart the PC. This clears temporary problems without changing app data.
Test the connection and VPN or proxy
- Check whether other websites load. If possible, test Netflix over Ethernet or another trusted network.
- If other devices on the same Wi-Fi also have connection problems, restart the router. There is little reason to reset a router when only Netflix on this PC is affected.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy and retry Netflix. Some VPN, filtering, or managed-network configurations can interfere with access or playback; this test does not mean every VPN causes a problem. Restore your normal privacy settings afterward.
Avoid random DNS changes, registry cleaners, codec packs, or “internet booster” utilities as routine fixes.

Check Windows date and time
Incorrect time can interfere with secure connections and sign-in. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on Set time automatically, and select Sync now if it is available. Check that the region has not been changed unintentionally; changing it is not a general troubleshooting step. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 time, time-zone, and region settings.
Update Netflix, Microsoft Store, and Windows
Update Netflix from Microsoft Store
In current Windows 11 and Store builds, open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. Let Netflix and Store components finish updating, then restart Windows and test playback. The layout and labels can vary slightly. Install the official app through Microsoft Store, not a third-party installer; Netflix directs Windows users there (Netflix app download instructions).
Install pending Windows updates
Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if prompted. Check again after restarting if Windows reports more updates. Updates can include system, security, media, and driver changes, but no particular update should be assumed to fix Netflix. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains the update process.

Repair the Netflix app, then reset it if needed
Repair first
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Netflix, select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options.
- Under Reset, select Repair.
- Reopen Netflix and test an actual title.
Repair is the less disruptive app-level option and is intended to address app problems without a full reset. Windows builds and app packages can differ, so the option or its precise effect may vary. See Microsoft’s guidance for repairing Windows apps.
Reset only if Repair did not help
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Netflix > three-dot menu > Advanced options.
- Select Reset and confirm.
- Launch Netflix, sign in again if asked, and test playback.
Before you reset: Reset clears local app data and may remove saved credentials, cached settings, or other locally stored state. It does not cancel a Netflix subscription and will not resolve an account suspension, service outage, network block, unsupported hardware configuration, or system-wide protected-media issue.
When Microsoft Store cannot update or install Netflix
Refresh the Store cache
- Close Netflix and Microsoft Store.
- Press Windows + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and press Enter. - Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close or finish; Microsoft Store should open automatically.
- Restart the PC, then retry the Store update or Netflix.
wsreset.exe refreshes Microsoft Store cache data; it is not a complete Windows repair and does not guarantee that Store services or Netflix app data are fixed. See Microsoft’s Microsoft Store cache instructions.

Repair Microsoft Store, then reset it if necessary
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Store, select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair first. If the Store still fails, return and select Reset.
- Reopen Store and try Library > Get updates again.
Resetting Microsoft Store may require you to sign in again and can clear Store-local data; it is not described as deleting personal files. Microsoft documents Repair and Reset in its app repair guidance. A work-managed PC, parental controls, regional availability, or Microsoft-account restrictions may prevent Store access independently of Netflix.
Reinstall Netflix only after the less disruptive fixes
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Netflix, open its three-dot menu, and select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store, search for Netflix, and select the official app. Choose Get or Install.
- When installation finishes, open Netflix, sign in, and test a title.
Reinstallation can help with a damaged installation, but does not fix account, network, service, or device-wide playback problems. Do not delete arbitrary folders under %LocalAppData%; Store app package folders vary, and removing the wrong data can cause further problems. Netflix distributes the Windows app through Microsoft Store (Netflix download page).

Use a browser to narrow down the cause
Netflix supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 browsers. Its requirements page lists Edge 118 or later and Chrome 117 or later for up to Ultra HD when additional requirements are met; Firefox 111 or later and Opera 92 or later for up to Full HD. These are Netflix’s listed minimum browser versions and maximums, not a guarantee of a particular resolution on every PC. Check Netflix’s current browser and system requirements.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- Browser works; app fails: the account and service are less likely to be the cause. Focus on the app package, Microsoft Store, and local app state.
- App and browser both fail: check service, account, network, Windows, display, and protected-media playback.
- One browser fails: update it, temporarily disable extensions, clear its site data, and test its hardware-acceleration setting. Change browser-specific settings only if the issue is confined to that browser.
Using a browser is a diagnostic fallback, not a promise that every feature of the installed app is available there.
Black screen, audio-only playback, or video that will not start
Try this section if the app opens and audio plays but the picture is black, video fails when you connect a display, or playback problems persist after basic app repair. Graphics, external-display connections, and protected-media playback are symptom-specific possibilities—not universal causes.
- Install a graphics driver from your PC maker or the official Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA support channel, then restart. Driver changes can introduce new issues; avoid unofficial driver utilities.
- Temporarily disconnect a dock, splitter, capture device, or external monitor and retry on the PC’s built-in display. If that changes the result, reconnect devices one at a time and check the cable or port.
- If the failure happens only in full-screen mode, test windowed playback. If it happens only in a browser, test that browser’s hardware-acceleration setting.
- Do not delete DRM or protected-content files unless Netflix or Microsoft specifically instructs you to do so.
Buffering or lower-than-expected picture quality
Buffering is not by itself evidence of a broken installation. Test a stable connection and compare the result on another device or network. A stream can play normally at less than its highest possible resolution because of connection conditions, plan, profile playback settings, title availability, browser support, display, cable, or HDCP limitations.
For browser playback, use Netflix’s browser and Ultra HD requirements rather than assuming Windows 11 alone guarantees 4K. Netflix says data use varies with quality; its data-use guidance lists up to 7 GB per hour for Ultra HD under the “High” setting, not as a fixed consumption rate.
When to contact Netflix or Microsoft
- Contact Netflix if the account cannot sign in on multiple devices, a service problem appears to affect multiple devices, or the same Netflix error code persists after you have isolated the device and network.
- Contact Microsoft if Store cannot install or update apps after its cache and app-repair steps, or if the PC’s Store access is restricted by its organization.
- If the problem began after a specific Windows or graphics-driver update and other protected-media services also fail, seek help from the PC or driver manufacturer as well as Microsoft.
When requesting help, provide the exact error code, whether Netflix works in a browser and on another device, and which troubleshooting step changed the behavior.
