To stop users from clearing browsing and download history through Microsoft Edge, configure the administrative policy AllowDeletingBrowserHistory as Disabled. On Windows, use Group Policy or set the policy’s registry DWORD to 0. This restricts Edge’s normal deletion controls; it is not a tamper-proof record-retention system.
Quick answer

Microsoft documents the policy, its supported platforms, refresh behavior, sync effect, and retention limitations in its AllowDeletingBrowserHistory policy reference.
What the policy blocks—and what it does not
The policy targets the browsing-history records and the download-history list that users can clear through Edge. Edge’s normal clearing interface is under Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Clear browsing data > Choose what to clear. Microsoft’s history and deletion guidance distinguishes the list of downloaded files from the files themselves.

The entire Clear browsing data page may remain accessible even when deletion of browsing and download history is restricted. Other data categories can have their own controls and policies.

Set the policy with Group Policy on Windows
Use this method on a Windows device with the Microsoft Edge administrative templates available. Microsoft identifies the template as MSEdge.admx. In a centrally managed environment, deploy the setting through the organization’s Group Policy rather than configuring each computer separately.
- Make sure the Microsoft Edge administrative templates are installed or available to the Group Policy environment.
- Open Local Group Policy Editor by running
gpedit.msc. - Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
- Open Enable deleting browser and download history.
- Select Disabled, then select Apply and OK. Do not select Enabled: that permits deletion.
- Restart Edge if needed, then verify the policy and test the relevant controls using the steps below.
If the Microsoft Edge folder or policy is missing, confirm that the Edge administrative templates have been installed in the policy environment. The policy’s exact name and template details are in Microsoft’s policy reference.

Set the policy through the Windows registry
Use the registry method when Group Policy Editor is unavailable. It creates a machine-wide administrative policy, so writing under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE requires an elevated Command Prompt. Back up the registry or prefer managed Group Policy when available; a local registry setting is not a reliable barrier against someone who has administrator access.

- Run:
reg add "HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge" ^ /v AllowDeletingBrowserHistory ^ /t REG_DWORD ^ /d 0 ^ /f - Close and reopen Edge, then confirm the policy at
edge://policy.
The command creates the Edge policy key if it does not exist. The value must be a DWORD set to 0; setting it to 1 allows deletion. Microsoft lists the registry path, value name, type, and data in its policy documentation.

Configure managed Macs; mobile Edge is unsupported
Microsoft lists AllowDeletingBrowserHistory as supported on macOS beginning with Edge version 77. The preference key is AllowDeletingBrowserHistory. How to deploy it depends on the Mac’s management setup—for example, a configuration profile, MDM platform, or local preference deployment—so there is no single universal command to apply here. Consult the Microsoft policy reference for the supported policy details.
Microsoft lists this policy as unsupported on Edge for Android and iOS. The Windows Group Policy and registry instructions above do not apply to those apps.

Verify that Edge received the policy
- Open Edge in the profile used by the intended user and visit
edge://policy. - Select Reload policies if needed.
- Look for
AllowDeletingBrowserHistoryand confirm that it is present with a value offalseor an equivalent disabled state. The exact display may vary by Edge build and management environment. - Open the history and Clear browsing data interfaces and test whether deletion of browsing and download history is blocked. The page itself may still open, and controls for other data categories may remain available.
The policy supports dynamic refresh, so a browser restart is not always required for the policy engine to receive it. Restarting Edge is still a useful troubleshooting step when an open settings page does not reflect a change.

If history should remain on the device, make sure ClearBrowsingDataOnExit is not enabled. Microsoft says this policy takes precedence over AllowDeletingBrowserHistory and clears browsing data when Edge closes. Configuring both can therefore defeat the retention goal. Understand the consequences and limits
History sync and open-tab sync are disabled
Microsoft states that disabling AllowDeletingBrowserHistory also disables history sync and open-tab sync. If users rely on those features across devices, account for that impact before applying the policy.
It is not permanent retention or an audit log
Microsoft warns that the policy does not guarantee history retention. Someone with sufficient system access may directly alter or delete the history database, and Edge may expire or archive older history. Local profile history, account-synced history, and data associated with Microsoft’s cloud or privacy dashboard are not interchangeable; clearing local data is not the same as managing cloud-associated data. The Microsoft history guidance describes local and synced data management.
Consider privacy before restricting deletion
Retained history can expose sensitive URLs, searches, health or financial visits, and work activity to later users of a shared device. Schools, employers, parents, and other administrators should use a legitimate, disclosed, access-controlled retention approach and follow applicable privacy, employment, and data-protection requirements.
For accountability that must withstand tampering, browser history alone is a weak control. Organizations should evaluate an approved endpoint, network, DNS, proxy, or security logging system with transparent notice and an explicit retention policy. For shared or public computers, Windows account restrictions, kiosk configuration, or managed-device controls may be more appropriate. Restricting InPrivate use also requires a separate policy; this setting does not do it.

Troubleshoot when deletion is still possible
- Check the direction: the Group Policy setting must be Disabled, not Enabled. In the registry, use DWORD data

edge://policyand confirmAllowDeletingBrowserHistoryappears with the disabled value. - Check for an override: domain, MDM, or another management source may be supplying a conflicting setting.
- Test the right profile: verify from the profile and account the intended user actually uses, not only from an administrator’s profile.
- Restart Edge: fully close and reopen the browser if the policy or page has not updated.
- Check the exit policy: if history vanishes after closing Edge, inspect whether
ClearBrowsingDataOnExitis enabled. - Distinguish list from file: this policy retains the download-history list; it does not prevent deletion of downloaded files.
