A Canva “Something Went Wrong (500)” message is an internal server error, but it does not prove Canva is down or that your design is damaged. A session, browser extension, network filter, app, account, or one particular design or action can produce a similar failure. First protect any unsaved work, then check Canva’s service information and test whether the problem follows your browser, device, network, or design.
Quick check: Copy unsaved text if you can, reload once, wait a few minutes before retrying, and open Canva in a private window. If it still fails, test another browser or network and check Canva’s Help Center. Avoid repeatedly clicking Save, Download, Publish, or Pay while the result is uncertain.
What does Canva error 500 mean?
HTTP 500 is a general internal server error: a request could not be completed, and the message alone does not identify why. Canva’s developer guidance describes unexpected connection failures as server errors and advises retrying later when a service is unavailable: Canva Errors & messaging.
The error may appear while loading, editing, saving, uploading, downloading, publishing, signing in, sharing, or changing a subscription. Canva may be having a service problem, but an expired session, stored site data, extension, VPN or network filter, outdated app, account issue, or request involving one design can look similar. The wording is not evidence that you caused the problem.

First determine whether Canva or your setup is affected
- Open the Canva Help Center and check for relevant service or account information. Canva publishes incident pages under its Help system, such as this incident page; an individual page may not remain available after an incident closes.
- Ask a colleague or friend whether they can open Canva, if practical.
- Try Canva in a private/incognito window, then in a different browser.
- If possible, try another device or connection, such as a phone hotspot. Check whether unrelated websites work normally.
If Canva fails across multiple browsers, devices, and networks, a service-side or account-side issue becomes more likely, though the tests cannot prove which one. If only one browser fails, focus on its profile, stored data, and extensions; if only one device fails, focus on its app, browser, or network settings.
Try the lowest-risk fixes first
Reload once and retry after a short wait
If the page is still open, copy any unsaved text or other content you can access. Reload Canva once, wait a few minutes, and retry the failed action. A transient failure may clear, but repeated requests can create duplicate exports or publishing attempts, and make it unclear whether a payment or other action completed.
Use a private or incognito window
Open a private/incognito window, sign in to Canva, and repeat the action that produced the error. If it works there, stored site data, a cookie, an extension, or an issue with your usual browser profile is a likely lead. If it still fails, test another browser, device, or network before concluding that Canva is down. Private mode is not a complete diagnostic: some extensions, security software, and network policies can still apply.

Hard-refresh the page
A hard refresh asks the browser to reload page resources rather than relying on its ordinary cached copy. Keyboard shortcuts vary by browser and setup:
- Windows/Linux, Chrome, Edge, or Firefox: try
Ctrl + Shift + RorCtrl + F5. - macOS, Chrome or Firefox: try
Command + Shift + R. - Safari on macOS: reload normally; a deeper cache bypass may require Safari’s developer tools.
A hard refresh does not necessarily remove cookies, local storage, or session data, so it is not the same as clearing Canva’s site data.
Isolate browser extensions and network filters
Ad blockers, privacy or anti-tracking tools, script blockers, password-manager overlays, grammar assistants, download managers, and corporate security extensions can interfere with page requests or controls. Temporarily disable extensions rather than uninstalling them, reload Canva, and retry. If the error disappears, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a conflict.

You can also test briefly without a VPN, proxy, DNS filter, or corporate web filter if your circumstances permit. Treat this as diagnosis, not a reason to leave security protections off. Canva says cookies and similar technologies help it recognize devices, maintain sessions, and provide site functionality; blocking or clearing them can impair features. See its Cookies Policy.
Clear Canva’s site data, not every browser cookie
- Open Canva in your browser and select the site-information icon beside the address bar.
- Open the browser’s cookie or site-data settings and remove stored data for Canva only.
- Close and reopen the browser, then sign in again and retry.
Exact labels differ among Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Clearing Canva data can sign you out and remove local preferences. It should not delete designs already saved to Canva’s cloud, but it cannot restore unsynchronized work. Canva’s cookie policy notes that clearing cookies can impair functionality or remove saved preferences.
If you are using the Canva app
- Force-close Canva and restart the device.
- Check for an app update through the official app store or Canva’s official download channel.
- If the app allows it, sign out and back in; also test Canva in a browser.
- Reinstall only after confirming important work is saved or synced.
Reinstallation can remove locally cached information, so it is not a recovery method for unsynced work. If both the app and browser fail, the cause may be account-side or service-side rather than the installation.

If only one design or action fails
Open a blank design and another existing design. If those work, note what you were doing when the error appeared: loading one file, inserting a particular image, video, font, animation, or embedded app, saving, or exporting. A large or complex file or a particular asset is a practical possibility, not a confirmed universal cause of Canva 500 errors.
- Preserve the original; avoid destructive edits while the cause is unclear.
- If Canva allows it, duplicate the affected design and work on the copy.
- In a new blank design, copy elements from the affected design in small groups. If the error returns, narrow down the page or asset involved.
- Remove or replace a suspected asset only in the copy, then retry the action.
- If export is the failure, try a smaller page selection or another suitable format. Check whether the alternative changes quality, editability, transparency, fonts, or links.
Copying into a new design may not preserve every feature, animation, link, collaboration permission, or item of design history. Keep the original intact where possible.

Troubleshoot upload and export errors separately
When an upload fails
If other Canva functions work and one upload fails, try one file at a time, a smaller file, a simple filename, and a common appropriate format such as PNG, JPG, MP4, or PDF. Test another network or use the browser if the app fails. These checks are useful when a particular file or upload request is involved; compression is not a guaranteed fix for a general server error.

When a download or export fails
If the design opens but export fails, the problem may be tied to that design, selected pages, an asset, permissions, format, or the export service. If opening designs also fails, investigate a broader account, browser, network, or service problem. If only certain pages seem to fail, export smaller page batches to isolate them; if one format fails, try another only if it suits the job.
Before retrying, check the downloads folder and the design’s current state. An export that appears to fail may still have completed, and repeated attempts can leave duplicate files.
Check login, team access, and billing actions
If the failure happens at sign-in, sign out if possible and sign back in using the same method as before—such as email/password, Google, Apple, or Microsoft. Test a private window and note whether another Canva account works on the same setup. For a team workspace, ask the owner or administrator whether permissions or access policies changed. Creating a new account is not a good first fix: it can split designs, subscriptions, team access, and ownership.
If the error appeared during payment or a subscription change, do not submit it repeatedly. Check your email for a receipt, your card or bank for an authorization, and your Canva account’s billing state before trying again. Contact Canva if the result remains unclear.
When to contact Canva Support
Contact Canva through its Help Center if the problem lasts several hours, persists in multiple browsers, devices, and networks, blocks an important design, or affects a team or Enterprise workspace. Escalate promptly if a save, publication, payment, or subscription action may have completed despite the error. The plan comparison describes plan offerings and support features; buying a higher plan is not a technical fix for error 500.
Include enough detail for support to distinguish a service, account, environment, or file-specific issue:
