If the Apple Account area at the top of iPhone Settings is gray and won’t open, first check Screen Time: Apple identifies account-change restrictions as a cause. Go to Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allow Changes To → Accounts and choose Allow. You may need the Screen Time passcode. This setting is a more targeted fix than turning off Screen Time entirely, and it applies when the account banner itself is unavailable—not necessarily when just one iCloud feature is.
Check what is actually grayed out
“iCloud is grayed out” can describe several different problems. Apple’s documented Screen Time guidance covers a grayed-out Apple Account and restrictions on signing out; it does not establish that every unavailable iCloud service has the same cause. Apple’s current terminology is Apple Account; older guides may call it an Apple ID.

Allow account changes in Screen Time
For a gray Apple Account banner, use this path:
- Open Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Under Allow Changes To, tap Accounts.
- Select Allow. Enter the Screen Time passcode if prompted.
- Review the other options under Allow Changes To and change any relevant Don’t Allow setting to Allow.
- Return to the top of Settings and try the Apple Account area again.
Apple lists Screen Time restrictions as a reason an Apple Account may be grayed out and gives this account-change setting as the remedy. Menu wording or placement can vary with iOS version, language, and child-device setup; if needed, search Settings for “Screen Time,” “Accounts,” or “Content & Privacy Restrictions.” Apple’s instructions for a grayed-out Apple Account are dated May 11, 2026.

If the account is accessible but Sign Out is unavailable due to restrictions, Apple’s separate remedy is to turn off the Screen Time passcode:
- Open Settings → Screen Time → Change Screen Time Passcode.
- Tap Turn Off Screen Time Passcode.
- Enter the existing Screen Time passcode, then try signing out again.
This is broader than allowing account changes: disabling the passcode can make other Screen Time settings easier to change. If the Apple Account banner is gray, try setting Accounts to Allow first rather than disabling every Screen Time protection. Apple’s sign-out restriction guidance describes this passcode step.
If you forgot the Screen Time passcode
The Screen Time passcode is distinct from the iPhone’s lock-screen passcode. To reset it using the recovery account configured for Screen Time:

- Open Settings → Screen Time → Change Screen Time Passcode.
- Tap Change Screen Time Passcode again.
- If prompted, enter the Apple Account email address and password used when Screen Time passcode recovery was set up.
- Create and confirm a new Screen Time passcode.
The recovery Apple Account may differ from the one currently signed in on the iPhone. If the reset does not work, confirm that you are using the account configured for recovery. Apple’s instructions, published June 12, 2026, are at reset a Screen Time passcode.

If this is a child’s iPhone
A parent-managed Screen Time restriction is an authorization decision, not necessarily a fault with the child’s iPhone. Ask the parent or guardian who manages the child’s settings to approve account changes. For a child in Family Sharing, the family organizer can manage the child’s Screen Time from the organizer’s device by opening Settings → Screen Time and selecting the child under Family. The organizer can change the relevant restriction or manage the passcode; the child may not be able to change a parent-managed restriction locally. If the iPhone is managed by work or school
A supervised iPhone may be subject to organization controls. Apple says a supervised device can show a notice identifying the organization and explaining that it may manage or monitor aspects of the device. Check Settings for a supervision or management notice, including near the Apple Account area. If the phone is managed by an employer or school, ask its administrator whether the restriction can be changed. Supervision is a separate possibility, not a confirmed cause of every gray iCloud control. Do not remove management profiles or try to bypass the organization’s policy without authorization. Work through these checks in order. Restarting can refresh a temporary Settings problem, but it will not remove Screen Time or organizational controls.

- Confirm whether the whole Apple Account banner, only Sign Out, or one iCloud service is unavailable.
- Recheck Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allow Changes To → Accounts, along with other relevant change controls.
- If a passcode is requested, resolve whether it is the Screen Time passcode or a parent-managed setting; use the recovery flow if the passcode was forgotten.
- Close and reopen Settings, then restart the iPhone.
- If the phone is functioning normally otherwise, check for an available iOS update.
- Look for supervision or device-management information and contact the organization’s administrator if applicable.
- If the account banner remains unavailable after these checks, contact Apple Support. If only one iCloud service is affected, troubleshoot that feature rather than treating it as a general account lock.
What not to do
- Don’t keep guessing the Screen Time passcode. Use the recovery process or ask the person who manages the restriction.
- Don’t erase the iPhone as an early fix. Confirm that you have a current backup before any erase; it risks data loss and may not remove a management restriction.
- Don’t use “iCloud unlock” or account-bypass software. It is unnecessary for the documented Screen Time cause and can introduce security, privacy, payment, and activation-lock risks.
- Don’t remove a work or school management profile without authorization. Ask the responsible administrator to change the policy.
