Bluehost currently lists a .org domain at $14.99 for registration and $18.99 for renewal. Its pricing page lists domain privacy at $15, while its registration guide says privacy is automatically included—so check the specific checkout cart before paying. Bluehost is most convenient if you also want its hosting or website tools; domain-only buyers should compare recurring costs and privacy terms elsewhere.
Is a .org domain right for your project?
.org is a generic top-level domain, not a country-code domain. It is commonly associated with nonprofits, community groups, education, open-source projects and public-interest work. That association can help set expectations, but the extension is a branding choice—not proof of charitable or tax-exempt status. The .org registry agreement is available from ICANN.
Good fits
- Registered charities, nonprofits, associations and clubs.
- Educational initiatives, research groups and open-source projects.
- Volunteer organizations, advocacy efforts and online communities.
When another extension may be clearer
- A retailer focused on selling products may find .com more immediately familiar to shoppers.
- A personal portfolio may be better served by a personal-name extension or .com.
- A local business may prefer its country-code domain if that is what its audience expects.
Choose the extension that fits the audience and identity you want to present; it does not independently verify the organization behind the site.

Bluehost’s published domain pricing page lists the following .org charges. Treat them as current price signals, not a guaranteed checkout quote: promotions, taxes, geography, billing term and the exact domain can affect the amount. Bluehost advises checking the Portal Renewal Center for renewal pricing because prices can change. See the Bluehost domain pricing page.

Do not assume a Bluehost hosting promotion makes a .org free. Bluehost says its free-domain offer applies to specified eligible extensions, but the reviewed information does not establish that .org qualifies. Check the exact plan terms and cart. A first-year promotion, if offered for an eligible domain, does not make later renewals free, and hosting remains a paid subscription.
How to register a .org domain at Bluehost
- Go to Bluehost’s domain search. The documented menu path is For Business → Domain Name Search; if labels have changed, use the domain-search control.
- Enter the complete name with the .org ending and check whether the exact name is available.
- If it is available, select Continue, then create a Bluehost account or sign in.
- Review the cart line by line. Check the registration term, privacy charge or inclusion, and any hosting, email or other optional add-ons.
- Enter billing information, choose the billing term and carefully verify every character in the domain name.
- Submit payment, then retain the order confirmation and watch for Bluehost’s verification email. Complete any required verification promptly.
- Manage the domain through the Bluehost Portal and confirm its status and settings.
Bluehost says a registered domain cannot be edited for a spelling correction and domain registrations cannot be canceled for a refund. If you discover a typo, the usual remedy is to register the correct name separately and decide whether to retain the mistaken registration.
What domain registration does—and does not—provide
- Domain: The address people type, such as example.org.
- Hosting: Server space where the website runs.
- Website builder or CMS: Software used to create and maintain pages.
- DNS: Records that direct the domain to a website host, email service or other destination.
- Email hosting: A separate service for addresses such as [email protected].
Registering the domain reserves the address; it does not publish a website or create an email inbox. Bluehost presents hosting and email as add-ons in its registration guide. If a site does not load after purchase, check whether hosting is set up, nameservers or DNS records point to the intended service, any verification is complete, and the domain remains active.

Privacy and public registration information
Domain registration requires accurate registrant contact details. Bluehost describes the public registration-data system as RDDS, formerly WHOIS. Where supported, its Domain Privacy service replaces personal contact information in public data with generic Bluehost information; it does not hide the owner from Bluehost, the registry, payment providers or lawful requests. Privacy availability is subject to the extension and registry rules.

Bluehost explains its service at Domain Privacy and public registration data and describes controls in the privacy settings guide. Because its public pages differ on whether privacy is included or priced separately, verify the .org privacy line in your own checkout and later in the Portal.
If the .org name is unavailable
Bluehost may show alternative suggestions or a backorder option when a name is taken, according to its registration guide. A backorder does not guarantee that the current registrant will lose or release the domain. Consider a memorable variation, different word order, a location or program name, or another extension that suits your audience. Before registering, check that the name is not confusingly similar to another organization or brand.
Protect the domain after purchase
- Use an email address you can access and monitor, and complete any required verification.
- Keep the confirmation email and invoices, and confirm the domain appears correctly in the Portal.
- Enable auto-renew only if the payment method on file will stay valid; Bluehost says it attempts renewal for another year using that card.
- Set a separate calendar reminder to review renewal pricing and account access before the due date.
- Check the registrant contact email and privacy setting periodically.
Bluehost publishes a policy under which an expired domain may be held for up to 30 days before redemption and lists a $99 redemption fee. Those are Bluehost’s stated policy details, not universal rules for every registrar or circumstance; recovery may become harder or impossible as a domain moves through expiration stages. Transferring a .org domain
Transfer an existing domain to Bluehost
Before starting, make sure the domain is eligible, unlocked, not in redemption, and not close to expiration; ensure registrant details are accurate and that you can obtain the EPP/authentication code. Bluehost says a transfer can take up to seven days and that its transfer fee renews the domain for one year after completion. Its requirements are in the domain transfer guide.
Transfer away from Bluehost
- Verify you can access the registrant email; update nameservers first if you need DNS to keep pointing to a particular service during the move.
- Unlock the domain and request its EPP/authentication code in the Bluehost Portal.
- Start the transfer with the gaining registrar and respond to authorization emails.
- Keep the domain active and monitor the transfer until it completes.
Bluehost explains the transfer-away process and EPP/authentication codes. It warns that a change to registrant details can trigger a 60-day transfer lock under applicable ICANN rules. Is Bluehost the right registrar for your .org?
Bluehost is a practical choice if you are already buying its hosting or want domain and website services in one account. That convenience can matter more than minimizing the domain’s recurring cost. For a domain-only purchase, compare the full first-year and renewal cost—including privacy—and consider whether you want your registrar separate from your host.
Compare registrars on the renewal price, privacy terms, transfer process and restrictions, DNS controls, account security, support, expiry policy and add-on presentation—not just the introductory registration price. Candidates include Cloudflare Registrar, Namecheap, Porkbun and GoDaddy; their current .org prices and terms are not established here, so verify them directly before deciding.
