The Vivo X90 Pro+ is a China-market camera flagship whose 1-inch-type main sensor, portrait lens and periscope telephoto still make it interesting to photography enthusiasts. But it is a late-2022 phone, and outside China it is generally an import rather than a locally supported model. In 2026, it is worth considering only at a substantial discount—and only if you are prepared to check the exact ROM, carrier compatibility, app support and seller warranty before buying.
What is the Vivo X90 Pro+?
Launched in China in late 2022, the X90 Pro+ sat above the Vivo X90 Pro in the X90 family. It was not simply a higher-storage edition: the Pro+ combined Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with a four-camera system that included a large main sensor, a dedicated portrait camera and a stabilized periscope telephoto. Vivo branded the camera system with ZEISS.
The distinction matters if you are shopping internationally. Vivo sold the X90 Pro in some overseas markets, but the Pro+ is principally a China-market model. An imported Pro+ should not be confused with an official global X90 Pro, which has different hardware and software availability. Vivo’s China specification page covers the Pro+; the international X90 Pro page is a different phone.

These are launch-era specifications, not a promise about the condition or software of a used unit. Vivo listed China launch prices of CNY 6,499 for 12GB/256GB and CNY 6,999 for 12GB/512GB. Those historical prices are not current U.S. retail prices; import cost, tax, condition and seller terms determine what a buyer actually pays. Camera: still the reason to consider it
Large main sensor
The headline is the Sony IMX989, a 1-inch-type sensor with optical stabilization. Compared with the smaller main sensors common in phones, its size gives Vivo more light-gathering potential and can help produce natural background separation at close range. It also gives the image pipeline more data to work with in dim conditions and when cropping.
Sensor size alone does not guarantee a great photo. Lens quality, autofocus, shutter timing, processing and whether the subject is moving all matter. A large sensor cannot prevent blur if the camera uses a slow shutter on a moving person, and computational processing still shapes the final image.
Two useful telephoto perspectives
The dedicated 50MP portrait camera offers an approximately 50mm-equivalent view, a practical perspective for headshots, half-body portraits, food and products. It can be more flattering than taking a close portrait with a wide main camera.
The 64MP periscope camera reaches roughly 90mm equivalent, or about 3.5x optical magnification, and includes optical stabilization. It is useful for distant subjects in daylight and reasonably bright indoor settings. Its narrower f/3.5 aperture gathers less light than the main camera, so it is not a guarantee of sharp long-range shots at night. Beyond the optical range, digital zoom is a crop, not a substitute for a longer lens. As with many multi-camera phones, exposure and color can shift when switching lenses.
Ultrawide and video trade-offs
The ultrawide is the less convincing part of an otherwise ambitious camera array. Reviews noted that it lagged the other rear cameras, so do not expect all four lenses to deliver equal detail or low-light quality. Check edge detail, color matching and night performance in your own use case; close-up or macro results and autofocus behavior can also vary by camera mode.

The phone supports high-resolution recording, including 8K and 4K modes cited in reviews and specification references. That does not make 8K the best everyday setting: it uses more storage and power, and stabilization or image quality may be better in 4K. Lens switching can be restricted in some modes, while long recording sessions can increase heat. Display, design and everyday handling
The 6.78-inch high-resolution LTPO AMOLED is one of the phone’s lasting strengths. It offers sharp text and photographs, high contrast and smooth scrolling at up to 120Hz; LTPO allows the refresh rate to vary to reduce power use in suitable conditions. Notebookcheck measured strong brightness in its test, but lab brightness depends on the test mode and should not be treated as a promise of sustained full-screen brightness outdoors.

The large circular camera island makes the phone visually distinctive and physically top-heavy. The X90 Pro+ is a substantial handset, so one-handed use may be awkward, and a case can help protect the raised camera area. Some finishes use a textured rear surface, but condition and finish vary across imported listings. Inspect the camera glass and screen for damage or wear, especially on used devices.
Performance and battery in 2026
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was a high-end Android processor at launch and remains capable of everyday tasks, multitasking, demanding games and image processing. UFS 4.0 storage also helps keep app launches and file work responsive. That is not the same as saying it matches current flagships: newer phones have newer processors, and this 2022 chipset is not a compelling reason to choose the Vivo over a newer model.
Sustained heavy gaming can heat the phone and reduce performance, while the high-resolution display, 5G and camera use add drain. Notebookcheck’s tests found strong performance but also noted heat under sustained full load; results vary by game, ambient temperature and software.

The 4,700mAh battery supports 80W wired and 50W wireless charging. Notebookcheck recorded about 15 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing under its controlled test conditions and a full charge in roughly 35 minutes. Treat those as lab results, not a daily-use guarantee. In 2026, battery health is especially important: an older or used device may have lost capacity and may no longer charge at launch-era speeds. Verify whether the seller includes a compatible charger; a Chinese plug may require an adapter, and local replacement or repair service can be difficult to arrange.
Importing the China model: the main ownership risk
The X90 Pro+ runs OriginOS, Vivo’s China-market software, rather than the Funtouch OS used on many international Vivo phones. Notebookcheck found Google services could be enabled on its tested unit and reported Play Protect certification at that time. That review does not establish that every X90 Pro+ in circulation today—or every seller-modified phone—will behave the same way.
Firmware build, region settings and seller changes can affect Google Play certification, notifications, app compatibility and over-the-air updates. Before paying, ask the seller for the exact OriginOS build and whether the phone is on its original China ROM. Installing Google Play is not proof that Google Wallet, banking apps, transit payments, push notifications or Android Auto will work reliably. Verify the exact apps and services you depend on, and get the answers in writing with a return option if they fail.
Also look for Chinese-language apps or recommendations and check notification permissions and background-app controls. Aggressive background management can delay alerts unless settings are adjusted. Smartwatch pairing, voice assistants and streaming DRM can be app- and firmware-dependent. Do not assume a seller’s “global ROM” is a benefit: it may be modified software that complicates certification, security, app behavior or official OTA updates. Vivo had not clearly stated a long-term OS and security update schedule in the review available at launch, so do not buy on an assumed support lifespan.
Carrier compatibility is more than “unlocked”
An unlocked phone is not necessarily a good fit for your network. Compare the exact model’s LTE and 5G bands with your carrier, then confirm the carrier’s current VoLTE and 5G activation requirements. A device can share some bands and still lack the combinations used for coverage or carrier aggregation. Ask the carrier about the specific model number rather than relying on a generic band list or a seller’s “works worldwide” claim. This is particularly important in the United States, where service depends on carrier provisioning as well as radio bands.

Warranty, repairs and returns
Confirm whether warranty service is provided locally by Vivo or only by the importer, who pays return shipping, and what happens if a camera, battery or display needs repair. Check whether the listing is truly new, refurbished, open-box or used; ask about battery health, prior repairs, screen burn-in, camera-glass condition and included accessories. A return policy should explicitly cover incompatible carrier service and essential apps, not just a device that will not power on.
How to assess an import listing
- Confirm the exact phone. Make sure the listing is for the X90 Pro+, not the X90 Pro, and obtain the model number and installed ROM/build.
- Check the network before ordering. Compare bands and confirm VoLTE, 5G and activation with your own carrier.
- Test software-dependent essentials. Ask about Play Protect certification and test your banking, Wallet, transit, Android Auto and wearable apps during the return window.
- Read the warranty and return terms. Identify who handles service, who pays shipping and what incompatibility is covered.
- Inspect age and condition. For used or old stock, prioritize battery health, screen and camera condition over the original capacity or cosmetic description.
- Calculate the real total. Include shipping, taxes, import fees, a suitable charger or plug adapter and possible repair costs. Compare that total with a newer phone sold locally.
Should you buy the X90 Pro+ or choose something else?
Consider it if photography is your priority, you specifically want the large main sensor and two distinct telephoto perspectives, the price is far below a newer supported flagship, and you are comfortable managing a China ROM. It is best suited to an import-experienced Android user who has verified network service and can live without a guarantee that every Google-dependent feature will work.
Skip it if you need dependable U.S. carrier support, Android Auto, Google Wallet, banking apps, local repair, a clear software-support horizon or simple setup. It is also a poor value if the import price approaches that of a newer phone with official regional warranty.
For Vivo’s camera approach, compare a newer X-series Pro or Ultra model that is actually sold in your country; regional releases and support differ, so verify the precise version. The X90 Pro may be easier to buy officially in markets where Vivo sold it, but it is not the Pro+ and does not have the same camera and processor configuration. The Vivo international site is a useful starting point for checking local products.

An iPhone Pro is a stronger mainstream option for video, app support, resale and service, though it is a different platform and camera philosophy.
Compare exact regional models and current support terms, not just camera megapixels. The X90 Pro+ remains an unusual and capable still-photo tool; it has aged less gracefully as an all-around, hassle-free phone.
Verdict
Buy the Vivo X90 Pro+ for its camera system, not for its age, software-support certainty or easy ownership. At a steep discount, with verified network and app compatibility and a credible return policy, it can still reward a photography-focused buyer. If those conditions are not met—or the savings are modest—a newer, locally supported phone is the safer purchase.
