Mojo Vision and CY Vision announced a development partnership on September 10, 2024, to work on micro-LED augmented-reality head-up displays (AR HUDs) for vehicles. Mojo is contributing its micro-LED display technology; CY Vision brings its automotive HUD platform and 3D imaging approach. The announcement described a development effort—not a finished product. It named no automaker or vehicle, and gave no production date, price, or consumer availability.

What the partnership is meant to combine

A head-up display puts selected vehicle information in the driver’s forward view, typically by sending an image through an optical system toward the windshield. An AR HUD goes further: it aims to make graphics appear aligned with places or objects in the road scene. The companies described a planned system using AI and 3D imaging to place navigation, safety, and other information in the driver’s line of sight. The announcement coverage did not provide a specification for a combined system or confirm that one was ready for a vehicle program.

The division of labor is complementary. Mojo Vision supplies the proposed display engine: micro-LEDs, which emit the light that forms the image. CY Vision supplies the automotive display concept and the optics and software intended to present that image to the driver. A micro-LED HUD does not simply shine pixels directly onto the windshield; the display source is one part of a larger chain involving image processing, projection optics, windshield properties, calibration, and the driver’s viewing position.

What each company brings

Mojo Vision first developed micro-LED technology for its Mojo Lens smart contact lens. In January 2023, it announced a shift toward commercializing the underlying display platform rather than continuing active development of the lens. Its current company description refers to a platform combining 300-millimeter silicon architecture, gallium nitride (GaN)-on-silicon emitters, proprietary quantum dots, and microlens arrays. Mojo’s announcement of its change in direction and its company overview describe that broader effort; neither establishes a production automotive HUD.

CY Vision focuses on 3D augmented-reality displays for vehicles. Its product page describes possible uses such as navigation, travel-safety information, infotainment, and visualizations of what an assisted-driving system detects or intends to do. It currently claims features including multiple apparent depth planes, a wide field of view, low latency, operation in challenging lighting and weather, more than 10,000 nits at the eye, and packaging up to 50% smaller than traditional HUDs. Those are CY Vision’s published claims about its platform—not independently verified specifications for a Mojo-powered system.

Why consider micro-LED for a car HUD?

Micro-LED is attractive for this application because a HUD must produce an image that remains legible against daylight and reflections while fitting into a constrained dashboard. A compact, bright source with high pixel density could help present sharp text and fine graphics, and a small display engine may give designers more packaging flexibility. Efficiency and fast response are also potential advantages, particularly as vehicles add displays, sensors, and driver-assistance systems.

Mojo said its display technology could be five to ten times more efficient than LED-illuminated LCD displays. That comparison was not accompanied in the available announcement coverage by test conditions, such as brightness, display size, duty cycle, or the specific products compared. It should therefore be treated as a company claim, not a guaranteed advantage for every micro-LED HUD. The display source’s performance also cannot determine the efficiency or image quality of the full optical system by itself.

Micro-LED does not remove the difficult parts of HUD engineering. Manufacturing small emitters at high yield, assembling them, maintaining color and brightness uniformity, handling defective pixels, managing heat, and keeping performance stable over a vehicle’s long service life all matter. A production HUD must also work with its optics, windshield, software, sensors, and vehicle electronics as a complete system.

OBD system, can read more than 100 kinds of data in the car. If the vehicle doesn't have OBD2 protocol, only displays GPS function.

What a driver might see—and what AR means

A conventional HUD can show speed, a navigation arrow, or a warning in a fixed area of the driver’s forward view. An AR HUD tries to position graphics in relation to the outside scene—for example, a turn cue near the relevant exit or a warning marker near a detected hazard. CY Vision’s public material describes potential navigation, lane guidance, road-sign or hazard highlighting, collision and pedestrian warnings, driver-assistance status, and takeover alerts. These are possible applications, not a confirmed feature list for the Mojo-CY collaboration or any particular vehicle.

“3D,” “AR,” and “holographic” are not interchangeable. A system may create graphics that appear at more than one virtual depth without fully understanding the road scene or registering every overlay perfectly to a physical object. The value of an AR graphic depends on accurate positioning and timing; a marker that appears to point at the wrong lane or hazard could confuse rather than help.

The safety case depends on more than putting graphics in view

The intended benefit is straightforward: showing relevant information nearer the road could reduce the need to glance down at an instrument cluster or center screen. But a HUD cannot guarantee fewer crashes. Too many overlays can clutter the driver’s view, and a misaligned graphic can undermine trust or draw attention away from the road. Safety also depends on prioritizing alerts, communicating driver-assistance limits clearly, and preventing the interface from encouraging overreliance on automation.

The system would have to account for driver height and seat position, eye movement, head position, windshield curvature and coatings, reflections, and changing ambient light. Sunlight, rain, snow, or polarized sunglasses may affect visibility. Navigation errors, inaccurate positioning, faulty sensor inputs, or unavailable assistance functions would also need to be handled without displaying misleading guidance. These are general engineering and human-factors challenges for automotive AR HUDs, not reported failures of this partnership.

What automakers would still need to solve

A vehicle maker evaluating a HUD must consider more than the image source. The windshield and its optical characteristics, the driver’s usable viewing area (the eye box), and calibration across different seats and driver heights all affect what the person behind the wheel sees. Replacing a windshield can also matter if the replacement changes optical properties.

Automotive use brings requirements that a display demonstration alone cannot prove: operation across temperature extremes, vibration and shock resistance, humidity tolerance, long-term brightness stability, functional safety, cybersecurity, software-update support, reliable supply, manufacturing yield, cost, and serviceability. The interface must also be validated for distraction and for how drivers understand warnings. A smaller package or a bright image source would be useful, but neither by itself demonstrates that a system meets these requirements or is economical to produce.

Different HUD architectures—including LCD- or DLP-style sources, laser-based systems, waveguides, and windshield-projection designs—make different trade-offs in packaging, brightness, field of view, optical complexity, cost, and integration. The partnership announcement did not include comparative testing, so it does not establish that a Mojo-CY design is better than every alternative.

Is the Mojo-CY HUD coming to a car?

The available evidence supports a partnership and an intended development effort, not a confirmed production feature. The announcement did not identify a vehicle manufacturer, model, Tier 1 supplier, prototype demonstration date, production contract, start-of-production date, or price. CY Vision continues to present its HUD platform to vehicle manufacturers and technology partners, while Mojo Vision’s public materials describe a broader micro-LED business that includes applications such as AI glasses and optical interconnects. The companies’ public pages reviewed for this article do not confirm that the joint automotive system has entered production. See CY Vision, its product information, and Mojo Vision.

That makes the partnership relevant as a technology and commercialization effort, not as news of a feature consumers can buy or expect in a named car. Its significance will depend on whether the companies can integrate the display source with a reliable, well-calibrated HUD, meet automotive requirements, and secure a vehicle-program customer. Until a customer and production plan are disclosed, claims about when drivers might see it on the road remain unconfirmed.
