Threads Communities are public spaces for recurring conversation around shared interests. Meta launched them in October 2025 with more than 100 topics; it later reported more than 200, and said Communities left beta in June 2026. The original “100-plus” figure describes the launch, not the latest confirmed count.
Communities add membership and community-specific features to the discovery tools Threads already had, including topic tags and custom feeds. They are not private groups, and Meta said membership was public and could appear on a member’s profile.

What are Threads Communities?
A Community is a public, topic-based place inside Threads for people to find and join conversations about an interest. Meta’s October 2025 launch examples included NBA/WNBA Threads, TV Threads, KPop Threads, and Book Threads. Meta described Communities as an extension of topic tags and custom feeds—not as a replacement for them or as separate private forums. Meta’s launch announcement explains the original design.

The distinction matters: a topic tag can label a post, while a Community gives a topic a dedicated destination and a join-or-leave relationship. A Community is still part of Threads’ public social experience; joining does not make your posts or membership private.

How to find and join a Community
- Search by name. Search Threads for the Community you want.
- Open one from a post. Tap a Community-linked topic tag when you see it in the feed. Meta said a three-dot indicator on a topic tag signals that the topic has a dedicated Community.
- Join from its page. On the Community page, tap Join in the upper-right corner.
Not every topic tag has a Community, and not every interest is necessarily represented. If a search comes up empty, the topic may not have its own Community yet, the feature may not be available to your account or region, or the Community may use a different name than the tag you tried.
What joining changes
- Access and navigation: At launch, Meta said joined Communities would be pinned in the feeds menu. In June 2026 it announced a Communities Hub in the main menu. If you do not see a Community where you expect it, look in the main menu or Hub; the interface may differ from the original launch layout.
- Public profile signal: Meta’s initial design displayed joined Communities as tags on a member’s profile. Treat membership as potentially visible to other people, rather than assuming it is private. Check the current join screen and profile before joining if visibility matters to you; the original announcement does not establish whether every later interface retains the same presentation.
- A Community-specific Like: Each Community has a custom Like emoji—for example, Meta cited a stack of books for Book Threads. This is the Community’s reaction identity, not a personal set of reactions each member chooses.
- Additional identity features: Meta began testing Champion badges and member flair in December 2025, then expanded Champion recognition in June 2026. These features were introduced in stages, so do not assume every label or badge appears for every member or Community.
Communities vs. topic tags and custom feeds

These tools serve different purposes. A tag helps classify or find a post; a custom feed helps curate what you browse; a Community gives interested users a shared place to participate. Joining does not guarantee that every relevant post will appear in the Community view, nor that the main For You feed will change in a predictable way. Meta said it was working on ranking within Communities and the For You feed during the early rollout, but that is not a promise of a particular feed effect.

How the feature changed after launch
- October 2, 2025 — initial rollout: Meta introduced Communities as a test across more than 100 popular topics. It described public membership, profile tags, feed-menu access, and custom Like emojis.
- December 15, 2025 — expansion and identity tests: Meta said Communities had expanded to more than 200 topics. It also began testing Champion badges and member flair, and said it was working on ranking in Communities and the For You feed. The “more than 100” launch figure and “more than 200” later figure refer to different points in the rollout, not conflicting totals.
- June 16, 2026 — leaving beta: Meta said Communities were graduating from beta. It announced a Communities Hub in the main menu, distinct Community icons, Community Progress indicators for topics nearing Community status, and expanded Champion recognition. It also said local-language Communities were beginning in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, and that Live Chats would expand to more Communities with co-hosting and the ability to quote moments into the feed. These announcements do not establish that every feature is available in every market or Community.
Meta’s June 2026 product update is the source for the beta change and newer features. As of that update, Meta’s public statements cited more than 200 topics, not a precise current total.

Who may find Communities useful?
- Fans and hobbyists can browse conversations focused on an interest rather than relying only on a general feed or scattered tags.
- Creators and publishers can find relevant discussions and recurring audiences, but joining is not a guarantee of reach or engagement.
- Brands and community managers can use Communities to understand public conversation around a subject. They should participate in ways that fit the topic rather than treating the space as a guaranteed promotional channel.
- Casual users may prefer a custom feed or following individual accounts if they want to curate what they see without publicly signaling Community membership.
Practical cautions
Communities are public spaces, not invitation-only or private chats. Check whether your membership is visible before joining, and consider whether you want that interest displayed on your profile. Like any large social space, a Community may include repetitive, promotional, off-topic, or low-quality posts. Its feed is not necessarily chronological or comprehensive, and ranking can evolve. If the Community is missing from your account, check the main menu or Communities Hub, try the exact Community name, and make sure Threads is updated; availability can vary by rollout, account, and region.

Local-language Community availability deserves particular care: Meta said these Communities were beginning in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, not that they were universally available. The same caution applies to Live Chats and newer badges, icons, or flair: announcements about testing or expansion do not mean every member has them.
