Safari’s Compact layout is a good fit if you want the webpage to take visual priority and don’t mind some controls being less obvious. If you switch tabs often, want actions close at hand, or find small controls hard to use, choose Bottom or Top instead. You can change layouts at any time in Settings.
What changed in Safari on iPhone?
Apple announced the iOS 26 redesign on June 9, 2025, and released iOS 26 on September 15, 2025. Safari’s new design uses rounded, floating interface elements in keeping with iOS 26’s Liquid Glass look. The tab bar sits closer to webpage content, and Apple offers three arrangements: Compact, Bottom, and Top. This guide is about Safari on iPhone; Safari’s layout options can differ on iPad and Mac. Apple’s iOS 26 announcement describes the redesign as giving webpages room to extend farther down the display while keeping common actions available.
The change is not a choice between a new design and a guaranteed return to Safari’s exact pre-iOS-26 appearance. Top and Bottom offer different toolbar placements, but the broader iOS 26 visual styling remains.

What’s good about Compact?
- Less toolbar prominence. Compact reduces the bar’s visual footprint, so more of your attention—and potentially more of the visible display—goes to the page.
- A quieter reading experience. If you mainly search, read, and move on, the lighter interface can feel less busy than an expanded toolbar.
- Core browsing stays accessible. Compact is still a Safari toolbar, not a stripped-down reading mode: navigation, the address and search field, and other controls remain available in the arrangement.
- It suits a minimal-interface preference. If you like iOS 26’s floating, translucent design, Compact is the most restrained of the three choices.
Those are interface benefits, not proof that Compact makes every task faster. A smaller-looking toolbar does not necessarily mean fewer taps.
Where Compact can be frustrating
Compact trades visibility for a less prominent interface. The tab switcher may be less obvious than in an expanded layout, and actions such as sharing, bookmarking, or adding a page to Reading List may be grouped under a More control. That can mean an extra step or a moment of searching if you use those features regularly. This is a practical usability trade-off; Apple’s layout documentation describes the arrangements but does not claim Compact is faster or easier for every workflow.

Consider Bottom or Top if you manage many open tabs, routinely share or save pages, or prefer controls to be clearly visible. Compact’s smaller floating controls may also be less comfortable for people who need larger or more consistently visible targets. Apple documents accessibility fixes in Safari 26, but that alone does not establish that Compact is the most accessible arrangement for any particular user.

- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Scroll to Tabs.
- Select Compact, Bottom, or Top.
The selected arrangement should appear when you return to Safari. Changing the layout changes how Safari’s controls are arranged; it does not by itself delete your tabs, bookmarks, or browsing history. Apple’s instructions are for iPhone, so don’t assume the same path or options apply on iPad or Mac.

If you don’t see the choices, first confirm that you’re using an iPhone with iOS 26 or later. If the layout does not appear to update, check the setting again, close and reopen Safari, and restart the iPhone if needed. Install any available iOS update. These are general troubleshooting steps, not confirmation of a particular known bug.
Which layout should you choose?
- Choose Compact if you spend most of your time reading and want the toolbar to recede, and you’re comfortable finding secondary actions when needed.
- Choose Bottom if you browse one-handed, switch tabs frequently, or want controls in a prominent lower area.
- Choose Top if you prefer the address and tab controls above the page and don’t mind reaching toward the top of the display.
Try your usual tasks in the layout you’re considering: open a page, switch tabs, share a link, and save a bookmark. If the arrangement makes the actions you use feel harder to find or reach, change it. You can choose based on your workflow rather than treating the new design as a one-way switch.

The redesign is only one part of Safari 26
Safari 26 also includes changes beyond toolbar placement. Apple said Advanced Fingerprinting Protection was extended to all Safari browsing by default, rather than being limited to Private Browsing. Safari 26’s release notes also cover web-platform, compatibility, rendering, media, and accessibility changes. The toolbar choice is separate from tab groups, Private Browsing, and iCloud tab syncing.

Safari receives updates over time, so the exact version can depend on the iOS build installed. The layout guidance here concerns the iPhone options documented for iOS 26; it should not be read as a claim that every Safari version or Apple platform has identical controls.
