The “Non-Valid Software Detected” notification is an Autodesk authenticity or licensing warning, not an error in your drawing. It means Autodesk considers the AutoCAD installation or its license nonvalid. That can involve cracked software, but an unauthorized reseller or software left on a second-hand computer can also be responsible. The warning alone does not prove that you knowingly installed pirated software. Verify the installation and entitlement through Autodesk before paying for another license or attempting any fix.
What “non-valid” means
Autodesk uses “nonvalid” to describe software it does not consider authentic or properly licensed. Autodesk says its warning can mean the software was not manufactured by Autodesk or has been cracked; it also notes that someone may unknowingly acquire nonvalid software from an unauthorized reseller or inherit it on a device. Autodesk’s support guidance is the best place to start.
The wording does not identify one universal technical cause. A mismatch between an installation and a user’s entitlement may be worth checking, but the exact trigger for a particular notification needs confirmation from Autodesk. An expired or incorrectly assigned subscription can cause access problems, but that is not automatically the explanation for a non-valid-software warning.
Does it mean you intentionally pirated AutoCAD?
No. The alert indicates Autodesk considers the installation or license nonvalid; it does not, by itself, establish the user’s intent. The software may have come preinstalled on a used computer, been installed by a former employee or IT contractor, or been sold by an unauthorized reseller. A legitimate company subscription can also coexist with a separate nonvalid installation on a particular device.

Check the specific installation and entitlement rather than assuming that either a valid-looking product key or a company’s subscription proves that every copy is covered. Autodesk’s privacy statement describes processing of certain license, device, usage, and technical information and the use of Autodesk Genuine and related programs to detect nonvalid use. It does not disclose a user-facing algorithm for a particular warning; it is not evidence that one specific file, IP address, or device detail caused yours.
What if you ignore it?
Autodesk describes a possible sequence of warnings that may eventually culminate in loss of access to the product. That does not mean every warning immediately disables AutoCAD; timing and behavior can vary by product, version, operating system, account, and enforcement stage.

Autodesk also warns that nonvalid software may expose users to malware, fail or behave incorrectly, and carry copyright or other legal risks. If the affected installation is used for production work, an interruption can also disrupt a project. Treat the alert seriously, but verify the situation rather than panic or pay an unsolicited demand.

- Capture the details. Save a screenshot and note the exact wording, when it appeared, your AutoCAD release and operating system, the Autodesk account signed in, and how and where the software was obtained.
- Check the entitlement. Sign in to Autodesk through its official website—not a link in an unexpected message—and check whether the account or organization has an applicable AutoCAD entitlement and whether you are assigned to it.
- Gather purchase records. Find the invoice, order confirmation, subscription details, education entitlement, or reseller information. A product key or installer alone does not prove that the license is valid.
- Ask Autodesk to verify it. Contact Autodesk Support with the warning and relevant account and purchase details. If a reseller was involved, check its status in the Autodesk Authorized Partner directory and contact it as well.
- If the installation is confirmed nonvalid, remove it. Autodesk recommends uninstalling nonvalid software and obtaining genuine software directly from Autodesk or an authorized partner. Preserve your work and configuration files first; uninstall steps depend on the release and operating system, so use instructions for your specific version.
- Check the device’s security. If the software came from an unknown source or included unofficial patches or key generators, remove those files and run a security scan. If you suspect compromise, avoid using the device for sensitive work until it has been checked.
- Install a genuine supported copy, if needed. Obtain the installer from Autodesk or an authorized channel, sign in with the account that holds the entitlement, and confirm that the product and version match it before returning the computer to production use.
Do not try cracks, license-reset utilities, unofficial licensing files, registry hacks, or instructions to block Autodesk services. They do not establish a valid entitlement and can add security or data-loss risks.

If you already paid for AutoCAD
Do not automatically buy a second license. Compare your invoice and order confirmation with the product, license type, subscription period, purchaser, and Autodesk account. Ask Autodesk to verify the entitlement. If you bought through a reseller, contact the seller while independently checking its authorization. If the sale appears fraudulent, preserve records and seek a refund through the payment provider; consider reporting the seller through appropriate channels.
If the message came by email
An in-product notification and an external email are separate matters. Autodesk documents in-product warnings, but an email claiming to be from Autodesk—especially one demanding payment—should not be trusted without verification. Do not click unfamiliar links, open unexpected attachments, send credentials, or pay based on the email alone. Sign in through Autodesk’s official site and contact Support or an authorized partner independently. Community posts about compliance emails are anecdotal and cannot authenticate a particular message.

Can reinstalling AutoCAD fix it?
A clean reinstall from an official Autodesk source may help if the problem is an installation or account mismatch, but it is not guaranteed and cannot make a nonvalid copy genuine. First preserve project files and verify the entitlement; if Autodesk confirms the installation is nonvalid, uninstall it and use the official installer for your supported release. Reinstalling the same package, applying a patch, or copying a license file from an unofficial source is not a remedy. There is no single safe uninstall path for every AutoCAD release and operating system, so follow the instructions for yours.
For businesses and IT teams
- Pause new production work on the affected installation until its status is clear, and preserve project files and relevant purchase records.
- Inventory Autodesk products, versions, users, devices, and purchase channels; check account assignments against the installations in use.
- Look for abandoned, duplicate, inherited, or unauthorized copies, including on shared workstations and computers prepared by third parties.
- Ask Autodesk or an authorized partner to verify the organization’s entitlement before purchasing replacements.
- Review endpoint security where software came from an unverified source, and document the resolution for the device and user.
Exact notification text and behavior can differ across AutoCAD releases and platforms. Autodesk’s cited support guidance specifically covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, so do not assume identical behavior on macOS or older Windows versions.
