Choose FreeCAD for parametric 3D design, LibreCAD for free basic 2D drafting, and QCAD for a dedicated 2D drafting workflow—especially QCAD Professional if DWG exchange matters. They are not three versions of the same kind of CAD program: FreeCAD is primarily a 3D modeler, while LibreCAD and QCAD focus on 2D drawings. The right choice depends less on a feature count than on whether you need editable 3D parts or conventional 2D geometry.

How their workflows differ
FreeCAD: build a model you can revise
FreeCAD is designed around parametric modeling. A typical workflow starts with a sketch, adds geometric or dimensional constraints, and turns that sketch into a feature such as an extrusion, pocket, revolution, or fillet. The model retains a history, so you can change an earlier dimension or feature and update dependent geometry.

FreeCAD can also create technical drawings from 3D designs and exchange a range of engineering and 3D formats, including STEP, IGES, STL, OBJ, and IFC. Its native project format is FCStd. The official feature list describes solid modeling and engineering-related capabilities including 3D printing, CNC-related work, and finite element analysis.

The broader scope brings complexity. FreeCAD has multiple workbenches and add-ons, and its parametric dependencies can take more learning and troubleshooting than editing a few lines and dimensions. For a one-off floor plan or a simple laser-cutting layout, that extra modeling structure may not help.
LibreCAD: draw and edit in 2D
LibreCAD is a free, open-source application for conventional 2D CAD. Its focused scope suits drawings made from entities such as lines, arcs, circles, polylines, hatches, text, and dimensions, organized into layers. It is an option for basic floor plans, workshop layouts, simple mechanical drawings, and other work that does not require a 3D solid model.
LibreCAD is not a parametric 3D modeler. If a drawing must become an editable solid or feed a 3D-printing workflow, you will need another tool. File compatibility should also be tested rather than inferred from the word “CAD”: the exact DXF version and the drawing’s entities, fonts, blocks, and hatches can matter. The LibreCAD manual documents its 2D scope and GPL licensing; its installation documentation distinguishes official releases from development builds.

QCAD: dedicated 2D drafting, with editions to distinguish
QCAD is also a 2D CAD application, with drafting tools for geometry, dimensions, layers, blocks, hatches, and technical drawings. Its editions are important:
- Community Edition: the free, open-source version, with fewer features than Professional.
- Professional: adds proprietary extensions, including DWG support, expanded DXF support, and additional tools. The DWG functionality is provided through a proprietary plugin.
- QCAD/CAM: extends Professional with toolpath and G-code functionality for applicable 2D machining workflows.
QCAD’s normal download flow can be confusing: the packages include a Professional trial, and the download page explains how to remove the Professional add-on to use the reduced Community Edition, or how to compile that edition from source. A trial is not the same as a free Professional license. QCAD’s license page explains the distinction between the open-source core and proprietary extensions.
Head-to-head: which comparison matters to you?
FreeCAD vs. LibreCAD
This is mainly a choice between 3D parametric design and free 2D drafting. Choose FreeCAD if you need editable solid parts, feature history, or a 3D model that can produce technical drawings. Choose LibreCAD if you want to draw and revise conventional 2D geometry at no license cost. FreeCAD can handle sketches and drawing-related work, but that does not make it the most natural choice for every AutoCAD-style 2D task.

FreeCAD vs. QCAD
Choose FreeCAD for parametric 3D models and engineering-oriented workflows. Choose QCAD for focused 2D drafting. QCAD’s isometric or “pseudo 3D” drawing tools are not equivalent to creating and editing true 3D solids. If you need both kinds of work, using a 2D tool for drafting and FreeCAD for modeling may make more sense than forcing either application to cover every task.
LibreCAD vs. QCAD
Both target 2D drafting. LibreCAD is the straightforward choice when free, open-source software and basic drafting are the priority. QCAD is worth comparing when you want its particular 2D workflow or need Professional features, especially DWG support. The paid edition may save time in a DWG-heavy workflow, but “supports DWG” does not guarantee that every drawing round-trips without changes.
File formats: test the drawings you actually use
DXF is the most relevant shared 2D exchange format in this comparison, but it is not automatically lossless. Compatibility can depend on the DXF revision and features in the drawing, including blocks, hatches, fonts, line types, splines, dimensions, proxy objects, and application-specific entities. A file opening successfully is not proof that it will plot or edit correctly.

DWG needs particular care. FreeCAD’s documentation says DWG is a closed-source binary format and is not directly supported by FreeCAD; its documented workflows rely on other mechanisms rather than native direct support. QCAD Professional explicitly offers DWG support through a proprietary plugin. Do not assume that QCAD Community Edition or LibreCAD provides equivalent DWG support. Before moving a project or choosing a tool for client work, test copies of representative files:

- Open a simple drawing with lines and dimensions.
- Check a file containing blocks, hatches, and complex polylines or splines.
- Include external references, custom fonts, or non-ASCII text if your real work uses them.
- Try the DWG version saved by your current CAD application, if relevant.
- Edit and save a copy, reopen it in the original application, and compare the result with a reference PDF or plot.
For 3D exchange, FreeCAD is the relevant choice among these three. Neutral formats such as STEP and IGES are intended for exchanging 3D geometry; exporting a solid as a 2D drawing format is not a substitute. Keep the original project file as well as any interchange export, since native files, workbenches, add-ons, and version differences can affect later editing.

Which should you choose for common jobs?

Cost, licensing, and support
FreeCAD and LibreCAD can be used without a software license fee and are open source. QCAD Community Edition is free and open source, but QCAD Professional and QCAD/CAM include proprietary paid extensions. “Free” describes price; “open source” describes source availability and licensing. They are related but not interchangeable claims.
QCAD’s paid license is described by the company as buy-once, use-forever, with access to updates included for one year; newer-version access can be renewed. Terms can change, so check the QCAD customer area and official shop for current license options and prices before purchase. QCAD Professional can be a sensible cost when its DWG/DXF workflow or support avoids recurring cleanup and rework; it is not a substitute for 3D parametric modeling.
Versions and production stability
Software versions and operating-system requirements change. As checked on August 18, 2026, FreeCAD’s official download page listed stable version 1.1.1, with Windows, macOS, and Linux downloads; it also warned that weekly development builds are not suitable for production use. QCAD’s download page listed version 3.32.9 for Windows, macOS, and Linux, alongside a time-limited Professional trial. LibreCAD’s documentation describes official release and development-build paths; check its release page for the current stable package rather than relying on a version number that may have changed.

For production drawings, use official stable releases, preserve untouched originals, record the application version, and test add-ons or macros on copies before relying on them. Check the official FreeCAD downloads, QCAD downloads, and LibreCAD release pages for current availability and platform requirements.
Verdict: pick by the kind of design you need
If you are drawing independent 2D geometry, start with LibreCAD for a free, open-source option or compare it with QCAD. If you need a dedicated 2D workflow and frequent DWG exchange, evaluate QCAD Professional against your actual files. If you are designing editable 3D parts, preparing models for 3D printing, or need dimensions and feature relationships to remain changeable, choose FreeCAD. There is no universal winner because these tools solve different CAD problems.
