Start by opening the Windows Camera app: if its preview works, focus on the app or website that fails; if it does not, check the camera’s physical privacy controls, Windows permissions, and Device Manager before changing drivers. This order helps distinguish an app setting from a Windows, connection, or hardware problem.

Identify the kind of camera problem

What you see Where to start
Camera works in Camera but not Teams, Zoom, or a browser Check the app’s camera selection, Windows desktop-app permission, website permission, and whether another app is using the camera.
“No cameras are attached” or camera missing from Device Manager Check the shutter or hardware switch, USB connection, Device Manager detection, and manufacturer settings.
Black preview Check for a closed shutter, competing app, wrong camera selection, driver issue, or hardware problem.
Camera stopped working after an update Restart Windows, check optional driver updates, and consider rolling back the camera driver.
Blurry or poor-quality video Check the lens, lighting, selected resolution, network quality, and the camera’s capabilities.

These symptoms point toward likely causes, not definitive diagnoses. Microsoft’s Windows camera troubleshooting guide covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; its settings paths below are included for users still running it.

Test the camera in the Windows Camera app

  1. Select Start, type Camera, and open the Windows Camera app.
  2. Check whether a live preview appears. If prompted, allow the app to use the camera.
  3. If the preview works, test the app or website that originally failed. If it does not, continue with the system checks below.

The Camera app is a useful first test because it helps separate a Windows-wide camera failure from a problem limited to a meeting app or browser. A “no camera” message points toward detection, connection, privacy controls, or a driver; a black preview can also result from an obstruction, lighting, or an app conflict. See Microsoft’s guide to using the Windows Camera app.

Check the shutter, switch, and camera connection

  • Built-in laptop camera: Open any sliding privacy shutter and check for a side switch, dedicated camera key, or keyboard shortcut, sometimes used with Fn. Look for a camera-disabled indicator, but do not treat the absence of an indicator light as proof that the camera is active; indicator behavior varies by device.
  • Manufacturer controls: Check the laptop maker’s utility and support instructions for your exact model. Lenovo devices, for example, may have camera privacy controls in Lenovo Vantage; other vendors may use a hotkey, BIOS/UEFI option, or different utility. Microsoft’s Teams camera guidance also describes Lenovo Vantage as an example, not a universal setting.
  • External USB webcam: Make sure it is powered and connected securely. If it is attached through a monitor, dock, or hub, connect it directly to the PC for testing, then try another USB port and check the cable for damage.

On a work or school PC, an administrator may disable the camera or control its settings. If a setting is unavailable or greyed out, ask your IT administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.

Turn on Windows camera permissions

Windows 11

Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Turn on Camera access, Let apps access your camera, and Let desktop apps access your camera. Microsoft Store apps can have individual permissions; desktop apps generally rely on the desktop-app access control. Browsers, Teams, and Zoom may be desktop apps even if they do not appear in the Store-app list. See Microsoft’s camera app-permission instructions.

Windows 10

Go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera. Check Allow access to the camera on this device, Allow apps to access your camera, and Allow desktop apps to access your camera. Labels can differ between Windows versions. Microsoft’s camera and microphone privacy overview explains how camera access is controlled.

If a permission is greyed out, the cause may be an administrator or organizational policy. Security software and manufacturer privacy tools can also block access even when the Windows controls are on.

Fix a camera that fails only in one app or website

  1. In the affected app, open its video or device settings and explicitly select the physical webcam. If you use a virtual camera, such as one supplied by streaming or effects software, temporarily select the physical camera instead.
  2. Close other video applications and browser tabs that may be using the camera, including Camera, Teams, Zoom, or Skype. If needed, open Task Manager and end the relevant application tasks, then reopen only the app you are testing.
  3. For a browser meeting, use the camera permission control near the address bar to allow access for that specific website. Browser controls vary, so check the browser’s own settings if the permission icon is not visible.
  4. Restart the affected app and test again. If it still fails, check its own camera permission and security or privacy software settings; avoid leaving protection disabled as a workaround.

Windows access, app selection, website permission, and another app holding the camera are separate possible causes. Change the relevant control rather than assuming that a working Camera-app preview means every app is already authorized.

Check whether Windows detects the camera

  1. Select Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
  2. Look under Cameras, Imaging devices, and Sound, video and game controllers. The category varies by device and driver.
  3. If the camera appears, right-click it. Choose Enable device if that option is offered. If the menu instead says Disable device, the camera is already enabled.
  4. If the camera is absent, select Action > Scan for hardware changes, then restart Windows and check again.

For an external camera that remains absent, reconnect it directly to the PC and try another port. For a built-in camera, check the hardware switch and manufacturer privacy or BIOS settings. Microsoft lists the possible Device Manager categories and scan steps in its camera troubleshooting guide.

Update, roll back, or reinstall the camera driver

Use these steps in order. Updating is not always the right first fix: if the failure began immediately after an update, rolling back may be more appropriate.

Check Windows Update first

Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Also review Advanced options > Optional updates for available camera or hardware drivers. Install relevant updates and restart Windows before testing.

Roll back a driver after a recent change

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the camera and select Properties.
  2. Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available.
  3. Restart the PC and test the Camera app.

The rollback option may be unavailable if Windows has no previous driver to restore. A full restart is more useful for diagnosis than simply waking the PC from sleep.

Reinstall the camera driver

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the camera and choose Uninstall device.
  2. If offered, select the option to remove the driver software. Its wording varies: Windows 11 may show Attempt to remove the driver for this device, while older Windows 10 driver packages may use Delete the driver software for this device.
  3. Confirm the uninstall, then choose Action > Scan for hardware changes or restart Windows so it can detect and reinstall the camera.
  4. Test the camera. If Windows does not restore the needed driver, get the model-specific driver from the PC or camera manufacturer’s official support page.

Try the standard USB Video Device driver for an external webcam

If a USB webcam’s normal driver is not working, Windows’ in-box UVC driver may restore basic video. In Device Manager, right-click the webcam and choose Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer. Select USB Video Device, choose Next, then retest.

Use the Windows 11 camera troubleshooter

On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the Camera troubleshooter. It can run diagnostics and attempt automatic fixes; Microsoft lists it with its Windows troubleshooters. It cannot necessarily resolve a failed camera module, a manufacturer-specific setting, or an organization’s policy.

Interpret common camera error codes

Error codes help route troubleshooting but do not prove that a particular component is broken. Microsoft’s error guidance describes multiple possible causes for some codes.

Error Useful next step
0xA00F4244 / NoCamerasAreAttached Check the physical connection or privacy control, then Device Manager, hardware scan, and drivers. See Microsoft’s error-specific page.
0xA00F4243 or 0xA00F4289 Close competing camera apps and review Windows and app permissions.
0x80070005 Check Windows permissions, security software, and work or school restrictions.
0xA00F4294 Restart, check optional driver updates, and consider rolling back or reinstalling the camera driver.
0xA00F4292 Camera access may be restricted by policy; contact the administrator on a managed PC.
0x80070490 or 0x80004005 Check detection and the driver, then scan for hardware changes; the code alone does not establish a hardware failure.

Fix a black screen or poor image quality

Black screen or no video

  • Open the shutter or toggle the physical camera switch.
  • Clean the lens and make sure it is not covered by a screen protector or other obstruction.
  • Test in Camera, then close other apps and confirm the correct camera is selected.
  • If the issue persists, check permissions and follow the Device Manager and driver steps above. For an external camera, test another port or computer.

Blurry, dim, or low-quality video

  • Clean the lens and improve the light falling on your face; low light can make a preview look poor even when the camera works.
  • Check the resolution selected in the app and disable digital zoom or virtual-camera effects temporarily.
  • During calls, check network stability: a poor connection can reduce the video quality seen by other participants.
  • Consider the camera’s actual capabilities. A driver cannot add autofocus, higher resolution, or better low-light performance that the hardware does not support.

Know when to contact the manufacturer or replace the camera

Contact the PC or camera maker through its official support channel if the camera remains absent from Device Manager after connection checks and hardware scans, reports a persistent device error, or fails across apps after the relevant permissions and drivers are checked. If possible, test an external webcam on another computer; a failure there makes the camera or cable more suspect, but is not by itself conclusive.

For built-in cameras, use model-specific support if the device may be disabled in BIOS/UEFI, the module or display cable may be damaged, or Windows Hello or another specialized feature must be preserved. Official support starting points include Microsoft Surface, Dell, Lenovo, HP, ASUS, and Acer.

An external webcam can be a practical workaround for a damaged built-in camera or a desktop without one, but first rule out a shutter, permission, or driver problem. Check Windows UVC compatibility, the USB connector, and any special feature you need; do not assume every USB webcam supports Windows Hello. Repair or replacement is more reasonable when the camera is physically damaged, fails on multiple computers, or cannot meet the image-quality or framing needs of the user.
