Yes—Valve officially lists Amazon Fire TV as a Steam Link platform. But availability depends on your exact Fire TV model and region, so the quickest compatibility check is to search for Steam Link in that device’s Amazon Appstore. Steam Link streams games from a computer running Steam; it does not install or run PC games on the Fire TV itself.
What Steam Link does on Fire TV
Steam Link is a remote-play app: your computer runs the game, sends its video and audio to the Fire TV, and receives your controller inputs over the network. You need a host computer with Steam and the game installed. It is not ordinary screen casting, and a Fire TV Stick does not become a gaming PC.
Valve lists Amazon Fire TV among the platforms for Steam Link on its Steam Remote Play page. The app is free; you still need the computer, games, controller, and network connection for the setup.

This is a dated list, not a guarantee that it covers every model supported today. Amazon’s Appstore listing on your own device is the best practical check: availability can vary by model and store region. Amazon also distinguishes Fire OS from Vega OS. For example, the Fire TV Stick 4K Select is identified as a Vega OS device; do not assume that an Android/Fire OS app will be available on it. Check the listing rather than inferring support from a product name or generation.
How to install Steam Link
- On Fire TV, open the Amazon Appstore.
- Search for Steam Link and select the official app published by Valve.
- Choose Install, then open the app.
- Make sure Steam is running and signed in on the computer you want to use.
- Follow Steam Link’s on-screen instructions to find and pair with the computer.
- Pair a controller with the Fire TV, then run the app’s connection test before starting a game.
If the app does not appear or the store says it is incompatible, check your exact model, Fire TV software, and Amazon account region. Do not assume changing regions will fix it: availability is store- and device-dependent.

What you need for a reliable setup
- A PC, Mac, or Linux computer capable of running the games, with Steam installed and open.
- A Fire TV model on which Steam Link is available through the Appstore.
- A controller the Fire TV recognizes and Steam Link and the game can use.
- A local network connecting the computer and Fire TV. For the usual in-home setup, keep both on the same network.
Valve’s Steam Link support guidance for Android recommends a 5-GHz wireless router and identifies several controller families, including Steam Controller, Xbox One S, and DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or later. That guidance is useful context for Fire TV’s Android-based implementation, but it is not a guarantee for every Fire TV model or controller.
Controller notes
Controller compatibility has several steps: the gamepad must pair with Fire TV, Fire OS must recognize it, and Steam Link and the game must map its buttons correctly. Xbox Wireless and PlayStation controllers are common choices, but support can vary by controller version and device; other Bluetooth gamepads may work without being officially supported. Pair the controller before launching the game. If it connects but inputs fail, check Steam Input settings, try another game or controller, and confirm that the game supports a controller.

How to improve streaming quality
Steam Link performance is not just an internet-speed question. On a home network, local Wi-Fi quality, the host computer’s game performance and video encoding, Fire TV decoding, controller connection, and television processing can all affect the experience.
- Connect the host computer to the router by Ethernet if possible.
- Use 5-GHz Wi-Fi for the Fire TV where available, and keep it within good router range.
- Avoid congested Wi-Fi, weakly connected mesh nodes, and extenders with poor backhaul.
- Pause large downloads and bandwidth-heavy streams while testing.
- Start with conservative streaming quality and raise it only while the connection remains stable.
- Check TV picture settings if controls feel delayed; display processing can add latency.
No single resolution, frame rate, or latency can be promised across Fire TV models. A good network helps, but it cannot compensate for an underpowered host, a weak client decoder, or a controller or display bottleneck.

Troubleshooting by symptom
Steam Link is missing from the Appstore
Verify the exact model and whether it runs Fire OS or Vega OS, update Fire TV software, and check the store listing for your region. If Amazon marks the app unavailable or incompatible, treat the device as unsupported rather than assuming an APK will work.

- Confirm Steam is open and signed in on the host PC.
- Check that both devices are on the same local network, not isolated guest networks.
- Temporarily disable VPNs for testing and check whether firewall software is blocking Steam.
- Restart Steam Link and Steam, then retry pairing.
The picture stutters or quality drops
Check the host’s Ethernet connection, Fire TV’s Wi-Fi band and signal, router congestion, and Steam Link’s streaming quality. Also confirm the host computer can run the game smoothly and encode the stream. Stutters can come from the network, host, or Fire TV decoder—not only the internet connection.

Controls feel delayed or do not work
Try pairing the controller again, reducing wireless interference, checking Steam Input, and testing another controller or a wired connection if your device supports it. Delay can also come from TV processing, host performance, or the game itself.
Should you sideload Steam Link?
Usually, no. Amazon documents APK sideloading as an app installation and testing route, not as a guarantee that an unofficially installed app is compatible with a particular Fire TV. A sideloaded build may lack proper controls or optimization, fail to update automatically, or introduce video, input, and security problems. If the official listing excludes your device, a supported streaming device is generally the more dependable option. Do not treat installing an APK as proof of support.
Is Fire TV a good Steam Link device?
It can be a practical, low-cost endpoint if you already own a supported Fire TV, have a capable gaming computer and a solid home network, and mainly play casual or single-player games with a controller. It is less suitable for competitive, latency-sensitive play, weak Wi-Fi, or expectations of guaranteed 4K or high-refresh streaming. It will not let you play without the host computer.
