Press Shift + Tab while a game launched through Steam is running to open the Steam Overlay. It is Steam’s in-game interface—not the full desktop Steam client—and it works only when the game supports it and the overlay is enabled.
Open the Steam Overlay with a keyboard
With the game running, press and release Shift + Tab together. Press the same shortcut again, or use the overlay’s close control, to return to the game. Valve identifies Shift + Tab as the default shortcut, though you can change it in Steam settings. Valve’s Steam Overlay documentation explains how the feature appears over games launched through Steam.
The overlay can provide access to friends and chat, Community pages, guides, discussions, achievements, screenshots, a browser, Notes, and some game-related Steam features. Which options appear can vary by game and its Steamworks integration. Steam’s 2023 overlay update announcement describes its toolbar and features.

Enable it for all games
- Open Steam.
- Select Steam > Settings > In Game.
- Turn on Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
Steam’s menu labels can vary slightly by operating system, language, or client version. Look for the global in-game overlay setting in the In Game section.

Enable it for one game
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game and select Properties.
- Open General.
- Turn on the game-specific Steam Overlay option.
If the overlay works in other titles but not one particular game, check that game’s setting first. Steam Support documents both the global and per-game controls in its Steam Community Overlay FAQ.
Change the overlay shortcut
Go to Steam > Settings > In Game and edit the shortcut for opening the overlay. If Shift + Tab conflicts with a game action, choose a combination the game does not use. Press and release the keys together; holding them down is not required.

Open the overlay with a controller or Steam Deck
- Desktop Steam: Try the controller’s Guide or Steam button. Its behavior can depend on the controller configuration and active Steam mode.
- Big Picture Mode: The Steam button generally opens the controller-oriented Steam overlay. In desktop Steam, check Settings > In Game for the option to use the Big Picture overlay with a controller.
- Steam Deck: Press the physical Steam button to access the Steam in-game interface. The Deck’s controller button is the native route; a connected keyboard can also use Shift + Tab.

What to check if Shift + Tab does nothing
- Launch the game through Steam. Start it from your Steam Library rather than directly from its executable. For a non-Steam game, adding it to Steam and launching it there may help, but does not guarantee the overlay will attach.
- Check the global setting. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > In Game and enable the in-game overlay.
- Check the game-specific setting. In Library > right-click game > Properties > General, enable its overlay option.
- Confirm the shortcut. Review the overlay shortcut in Steam > Settings > In Game. Try a different combination if Shift or Tab is used by the game, remapped by a keyboard utility, or intercepted.
- Restart Steam and the game. After changing settings, fully exit the game and relaunch it from Steam. If needed, restart Steam as well.
- Temporarily disable competing overlays. Try turning off overlays from Discord, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD software, Ubisoft Connect, EA app, or another launcher. Restart Steam and the game, test the overlay, then re-enable other overlays one at a time to identify a conflict.
- Close monitoring, recording, or remapping tools. These utilities can interfere with overlay input or display. Test with them closed, especially if a controller or keyboard remapper is involved.
- Try another display mode as a test. If the game uses exclusive fullscreen, try borderless or windowed mode. This is a diagnostic experiment, not a guaranteed fix.
- Update and verify. Update graphics drivers and your operating system. If the issue affects just one game, verify its local files in Steam.
- Compare another game. If the overlay works elsewhere, the issue is more likely tied to that game’s integration, launcher, or security setup. If it fails across games after these checks, contact Steam Support.

Why it may fail in a particular game
- Another launcher is involved. A game that starts through an external launcher may attach Steam’s overlay to the launcher instead of the game, or another launcher’s overlay may conflict. Valve notes that non-Steam and retail games can have overlay problems, particularly when another launcher is involved.
- The game or its security setup restricts it. Anti-cheat systems, elevated administrator privileges, compatibility settings, wrappers, virtual machines, and remote desktop environments can affect overlay behavior.
- The rendering setup is unusual or unsupported. Valve documents support for several major graphics APIs, including DirectX 7–12, OpenGL, Metal, and Vulkan, but that does not guarantee compatibility with every title or configuration. Software-rasterized games do not receive the overlay.
- System resources are constrained. The overlay may close automatically under heavy resource pressure. Close unnecessary background programs, then restart Steam and the game.
If the overlay opens but freezes or disappears, first try closing background apps and disabling competing overlays. Then restart Steam and the computer; if only one game is affected, update its files and drivers before escalating the issue.
