On June 1, 2023, a network issue Spirit Airlines said involved third-party services disrupted its website, mobile app, airport kiosks and some internal applications. The outage led to long airport lines and widespread flight delays. Spirit said the technical issue was resolved later that day, but flights and passengers took longer to recover.
Reports put the share of delayed flights at different levels during the day. The evidence supports a major disruption, but does not establish the headline claim that more than 60% of all Spirit “operations” were affected.
What went wrong?
Spirit described the problem as a network issue between third-party services. Its statement identified affected customer-facing tools—Spirit.com, the mobile app and airport kiosks—as well as some internal applications. The airline apologized, warned travelers to expect longer-than-usual lines and advised them to arrive early. It also pointed passengers to FlightAware for flight-status information. That is the extent of the publicly described technical cause in the cited coverage. It does not identify a particular vendor or failed component, and it is not evidence of a cyberattack, an aircraft defect or a failure of every Spirit system.

How many flights were delayed?
Contemporary reports gave different figures because they reflected different snapshots or reporting windows—not one agreed final count:
- CNN-affiliated reporting citing FlightAware said nearly 60% of Spirit flights were delayed in a snapshot during the disruption.
- TravelPulse reported that the share reached nearly 90% at one point. That should be read as a peak estimate, not a settled full-day total.
- Boston 25 later reported 373 delayed flights—44% of the schedule—and 27 cancellations. KIRO 7 carried the same figures.
A delay percentage depends on when it is measured and what is counted: scheduled flights, flights operating, or flights listed in a tracker at that moment. The figures establish widespread disruption, but do not verify that more than 60% of Spirit’s overall operations—as distinct from flights—were affected.

What passengers experienced
With Spirit’s digital tools and kiosks unavailable, travelers faced longer lines and had trouble checking status through the airline’s usual channels. Reports described delays across the network; passengers also encountered extended waits onboard, including cases in which travelers were asked to leave an aircraft while the delay continued. One passenger cited in the CNN-affiliated report waited more than two hours for a Philadelphia-to-Nashville flight before being told to deboard.
A kiosk or app outage can slow check-in and bag drop even when a flight is still scheduled to operate. It can also make a delay harder to interpret: an unavailable airline app does not by itself mean a flight has been canceled. Check the flight’s status through another reliable source and confirm directly with the airline or airport when possible.

When was the issue fixed?
Spirit said the technical problem had been resolved around late morning on June 1; one contemporary report put the update at about 12:10 p.m. Eastern Time. The technical restoration took roughly three hours, according to Simple Flying’s incident listing. Those timings describe the reported outage, not the end of every passenger’s disruption.
Once systems return, an airline still has to work through delayed departures and the resulting movement of aircraft, crews and passengers. As a result, queues and schedule delays can continue after the underlying network problem is fixed.

What affected travelers could do
- Check status outside Spirit’s app or website. Spirit pointed passengers to FlightAware during the outage. Airport information displays are another option; verify important changes with airline staff.
- Allow extra time at the airport. If kiosks or digital check-in are unavailable, staffed counters may have longer queues. Spirit advised travelers to arrive early.
- Keep records. Save boarding passes, screenshots of status and delay notices, and receipts for expenses. They can help when asking the airline about next steps.
- Ask about the options for your specific booking. If a flight is canceled or substantially changed, contact Spirit about rebooking or refund options. If you booked through a travel agency or another intermediary, you may need to contact it for reservation help. Eligibility depends on the circumstances and applicable policy; a technical outage does not automatically establish a right to cash compensation.
Historical context
This was a June 2023 incident, not a current Spirit service alert. Separately, Spirit later entered an orderly wind-down and canceled all flights effective May 2, 2026, according to the Associated Press and the airline’s shutdown notice. That later cessation of operations was a separate event, not a consequence established by the 2023 technical outage.
