If Elden Ring opens briefly and closes, gets stuck at Easy Anti-Cheat, or never opens after you click Play in Steam, start by restarting Windows and Steam, then verify the game files. If that does not work, follow the branch that matches your symptom: EAC errors call for an EAC and security check; logo or black-screen crashes call for a mod, overlay, driver, and ray-tracing check.
These steps apply to the original Elden Ring PC game installed through Steam on Windows 10 or 11—not Elden Ring: Nightreign, Steam Deck/Linux, or modded online play. No single fix covers every cause, so work through the low-risk checks before reinstalling.
Choose the fix that matches what happens

Try these low-risk fixes first
- Fully exit Steam and restart Windows. In Steam, use Steam > Exit, rather than only closing the window. Restart the PC, reopen Steam, and check that Elden Ring has no pending update.
- Verify the game files. The steps are below. This can replace missing or damaged Steam files, but will not resolve every driver, EAC, security, or Windows problem.
- Remove mods and custom launch options. Temporarily take mod loaders and injected files out of the game directory, and clear custom Steam launch options. Back up saves before major changes.
- Test without nonessential overlays and utilities. Temporarily turn off overlays and monitoring or input tools, then try launching once. If nothing changes, restore them and move on.
- Update Windows and the graphics driver. Restart after updates, then test the game before re-enabling performance utilities.
- Follow the EAC branch if the error names Easy Anti-Cheat, or the black-screen/ray-tracing branch if the game reaches its menu.
Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide likewise recommends checking requirements, updating Windows and drivers, verifying files, and disabling nonessential software.
Verify Elden Ring’s Steam files
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click ELDEN RING and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish. It may report that files were validated or download replacements.
- Exit and reopen Steam, then try the game again.
Depending on Steam’s version or language, the tab may still be labeled Local Files. Verification checks the installed game files against Steam’s expected files; it is not a complete reset of every user setting or save. If you use mods, remove them first so Steam can restore the standard files and you can test a clean installation.

Fix an Easy Anti-Cheat error
Use this branch for messages such as “Easy Anti-Cheat is not installed,” an EAC launch error, or an EAC splash screen that finishes and then closes the game. EAC is not a universal explanation for every no-window launch failure.
- Close Elden Ring and Steam, then restart Windows.
- Verify the game files using the Steam steps above.
- In Steam, open ELDEN RING > Properties > Installed Files > Browse to open the installation directory.
- Look for the Easy Anti-Cheat setup or installation component included with that installation. If it offers a repair or install option, use it, then restart Windows and test again.
The exact component and options can vary with the installation. Do not download an EAC installer or DLL from an unrelated third-party site. Do not permanently bypass EAC as a routine fix: an altered or offline launch path is not the supported online setup and can leave multiplayer unavailable.
Remove mods and test for software conflicts
A modded game needs a separate diagnosis from the standard online installation. Temporarily remove mod loaders and injected DLLs, including reshade, randomizer, seamless-co-op, frame-rate, and other game modifications. Restore any replaced files through Steam verification and clear custom launch options. If reinstalling later, remove leftover mod files as well; reinstalling alone may not create a clean test.
Then test with nonessential software disabled. Where practical, turn off one item at a time so you can identify a conflict:

- MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner, RGB and hardware-monitoring tools;
- macro, mouse-control, controller-remapping, or other input utilities.
FromSoftware has cited third-party mouse-control software among possible PC instability factors in its patch notes. Disable these only for the test and restore them if they make no difference. Do not assume that a modded offline launch proves the supported online installation is fixed.
Fix a black screen, white screen, or crash after the logo
Update the GPU driver
Install a stable public driver from the official Nvidia, AMD, or Intel driver source that matches your actual graphics hardware. Install pending Windows updates first, restart, update the driver, restart again, and test Elden Ring before turning overlays or tuning utilities back on. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, a rollback or clean driver reinstall may be a later diagnostic step; the procedure depends on the GPU vendor.
Turn ray tracing off if you can reach the menu
From the title screen, choose System > Graphics > Ray Tracing Quality and set it to Off, then restart the game. FromSoftware has warned that ray tracing can be enabled unintentionally on some PC configurations and cause unstable performance or startup problems; see the Version 1.09 notes.
If the game cannot reach the menu, you cannot use this in-game control. Do not delete arbitrary configuration files or assume there is a universal file-reset method. If you explore a configuration reset, identify the correct file for your installation and make a backup first.

Check security software
Check your antivirus or ransomware-protection history for a blocked or quarantined game or EAC component. If you trust your Steam installation and confirm a specific block, use a narrowly scoped exclusion only as needed. Avoid indiscriminately whitelisting files, and do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled after testing. Security-software interference is one possible cause, not proof that protection should be switched off.
Check system requirements and laptop graphics
Bandai Namco lists these PC requirements for Elden Ring. They are specifications, not a guarantee that every system at the minimum will launch reliably.

See the official Elden Ring specifications. “60 GB available” means free space on the drive, not its total capacity. Ray tracing has higher hardware demands than the ordinary minimum specification. If you have a laptop with switchable graphics, check Windows graphics settings or the GPU control panel to ensure the game uses the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.

Administrator permissions, clean boot, and reinstall
Test administrator permissions only if the simpler checks fail. Close Steam, right-click its shortcut, and choose Run as administrator. If needed, test the game launcher with administrator permissions as well. Treat this as a diagnostic, not a permanent universal fix: inconsistent elevation between Steam and the game can create library permission problems, and administrator mode cannot repair damaged files, unsupported hardware, or a broken driver.

Try a Windows clean boot only as a later isolation test. It can reveal a conflicting startup service, but it is not Elden Ring-specific. Record what you change and restore the original startup configuration afterward.
Reinstall only after the lower-risk steps. Before uninstalling, verify files, remove mods, check free space, and back up saves and configuration files. A reinstall can reset a local game installation, but may not remove every user-created file or fix an EAC, driver, security, or Windows-permission problem. Do not delete save files as an initial troubleshooting step.
Check the game version and contact support
The latest numbered official patch identified in the supplied source material is Version 1.16.1, dated August 21, 2025. That should not be treated as a guarantee that it remains the newest version on the day you troubleshoot: check Steam’s update status, the game’s title screen, and the official news page.

Avoid risky shortcuts
- Do not download random EAC installers, DLLs, or “fix” programs.
- Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled as a supposed permanent fix.
- Do not bypass EAC and treat an offline launch as proof that online play is repaired.
- Do not delete saves or unknown configuration files without a backup.
- Do not reinstall immediately: first rule out mods, overlays, updates, EAC, and security blocks.
