Netflix went live in India on January 6, 2016, with reported monthly plans starting at ₹500. The launch was part of a major global expansion—not a recent entry into India—and that ₹500 figure is historical. Netflix’s India site advertised plans from ₹149 to ₹649 per month before tax in August 2026, with current plans not directly comparable to the original tiers.
A global expansion brought Netflix to India
Netflix announced its India launch during Reed Hastings’ CES 2016 keynote in Las Vegas. On January 6, the service became available in more than 130 additional countries at once, bringing Netflix close to its stated ambition of operating across roughly 200 countries. China was among the notable exclusions, alongside territories affected by U.S. restrictions. India’s launch was one part of this broad international push, rather than a standalone rollout. Netflix’s announcement set out the expansion and the date.

For Indian viewers, Netflix offered internet-delivered, on-demand viewing rather than a scheduled television channel. Subscribers could watch through compatible smart TVs, game consoles, streaming players, smartphones and tablets. Access depended on an internet connection, so the cost of subscribing was only part of the practical cost of watching.

What the original Netflix India plans cost
Contemporary launch coverage generally listed three monthly tiers:

The top-tier price needs a caveat. Reuters, The Indian Express and Hindustan Times reported ₹800 for the premium tier. An Economic Times interview instead referred to the 4K option as ₹850. The available launch-day reporting does not resolve the discrepancy, so ₹800 is the more frequently reported figure—not a price beyond dispute.
These were monthly subscription prices, not a complete estimate of what viewing would cost a household. Viewers also needed a suitable device and enough broadband or mobile data. HD and especially 4K streaming could be impractical on a slow connection or a restrictive data allowance; the 4K tier brought little benefit without a 4K display and compatible setup.

What subscribers could watch—and what they could not assume
The subscription provided on-demand access to Netflix originals and licensed films and television shows. Netflix’s global launch announcement highlighted titles including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Narcos, Sense8, Grace and Frankie and Marco Polo. Indian subscribers could also find Indian films in the catalogue, but that did not mean they received the same selection as viewers in the United States.

The launch should therefore be understood as access to Netflix in India, not to a single identical worldwide library. Nor should the later growth of Indian originals be projected backward: the launch coverage describes a global service and licensed catalogue, not a large slate of Netflix-produced Indian series already in place on day one. Why the launch was a test of Netflix’s model
India offered scale, but the initial offer also faced practical and commercial obstacles. At ₹500 a month for the entry plan, Netflix was asking viewers to pay a substantial recurring sum for a service that also required internet access. Contemporary commentary questioned whether a relatively standardized global pricing approach would fit a price-sensitive market. That concern was not just about the subscription: data charges, broadband access and the quality of a household’s connection affected whether streaming was usable and affordable.
Bandwidth and data caps were prominent concerns in launch-period interviews. A connection that struggled with HD could make the higher tiers less useful, while watching regularly over mobile data could add a separate cost. These issues made the headline price an incomplete measure of affordability.

Netflix also entered a market where viewers already had television, local and regional online-video services, and unauthorized downloads and streams. Contemporary reporting identified piracy as a challenge and noted that legal services needed to compete on convenience, content and price. Netflix’s arrival might help introduce subscription streaming to more consumers, but that did not establish that it was the first streaming service in India or that it displaced existing options.
Language and local programming were another test. Netflix’s global announcement described a service expanding across markets and said it expected to add languages and content over time. A global catalogue could make the service distinctive, but local viewers’ interests could not be met simply by making the same English-language selection available everywhere.

How Netflix adapted its India offer
Subsequent changes show how different the service became from its launch-day proposition:
- December 2016: Netflix announced a partnership with Red Chillies Entertainment, giving it subscription-video-on-demand access to numerous films and future titles associated with Shah Rukh Khan’s production company. Netflix’s partnership announcement marked an early move toward locally relevant content relationships.
- July 2019: Netflix introduced a mobile-only plan for ₹199 per month, limited to one smartphone or tablet in standard definition. At the time, the other listed prices were ₹499 for Basic, ₹649 for Standard and ₹799 for Premium. Netflix said Indian members watched more on mobile devices than members anywhere else; that was Netflix’s own claim. The plan announcement documents the change.
- December 2021: Netflix reduced its India prices to ₹149 for Mobile, ₹199 for Basic, ₹499 for Standard and ₹649 for Premium. Netflix announced the revised prices as a wider effort to make the service more accessible.
- By 2026: Netflix’s India page advertised a range of ₹149–₹649 per month before tax. In February 2026, the company marked its tenth year in India with a new slate of Indian films and series. These developments describe a later, more locally developed service, not the catalogue available at launch. Check Netflix’s India page for the current offer; prices and plan details can change.
What the ₹500 headline means now
The original ₹500 entry price was more than three times Netflix’s advertised ₹149 starting price in August 2026, in nominal rupees. But the figures are not a like-for-like comparison: the modern entry plan is mobile-focused, while the original Basic plan was described as standard-definition viewing on one screen without that later mobile-only distinction.
The launch is best read as the start of Netflix’s Indian experiment: a global subscription service entering with relatively high monthly prices, then changing its pricing and investing in local partnerships and programming.
