To download a satellite image, first decide how much ground detail you need. For a quick visual export, use NASA Worldview. For free imagery you can use in GIS, try Copernicus Browser for Sentinel-2 or USGS EarthExplorer for Landsat. These free sources are useful for regional and environmental work, but their 10–30 m pixels will not show fine building or vehicle detail. For that, look for commercial sub-meter imagery or aerial photography.
Choose a source before you download
“High-resolution” can mean a large image file, a sharp-looking map, or small pixels representing small areas on the ground. Those are not the same thing. Spatial resolution, often described by ground sample distance, is the approximate ground distance represented by a pixel. Enlarging a 10 m image does not turn it into 1 m imagery, and a 4K export may simply be a rendered view of coarser source data.
Resolution is only one consideration. You may also need a particular date, low cloud cover, specific spectral bands, reliable georeferencing, or permission to publish or reuse the result.
| What you need | Good place to start | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Quick image for a presentation or visual check | NASA Worldview | Download a rendered map view or selected layer; it may not include original sensor data or all bands. |
| Free optical imagery for GIS or land analysis | Copernicus Browser and Sentinel-2 | Free global products with bands at 10, 20, or 60 m, depending on the band. Clouds and revisit timing matter. |
| Historical imagery and a long archive | USGS EarthExplorer and Landsat | Free medium-resolution data with a continuous record extending back to 1972; not intended for fine property detail. |
| Building- or road-level visual detail | Commercial very-high-resolution imagery | Some products offer 50 cm-class sampling or better, subject to archive coverage, tasking, weather, access, and licensing. |
| Maximum detail for a location in the United States | Check local aerial imagery or orthophoto sources | Aerial imagery can be finer than satellite data, but it is not satellite imagery and coverage and reuse rights vary. |
For satellite imagery, “resolution” can also refer to spectral resolution (the wavelengths measured), temporal resolution (how often a sensor revisits), and radiometric resolution (how finely brightness is recorded). Remote-sensing analysis may depend on these as much as visual sharpness. Orthorectification corrects for terrain and viewing geometry; panchromatic and multispectral products capture different kinds of information. A natural-color or false-color image is a visualization, not necessarily the raw measurement.

Fastest route: download a rendered image from NASA Worldview
Worldview is a good choice when you want a visual result quickly rather than a complete scientific scene. NASA describes it as a tool to browse, preview, and download satellite imagery and create animations (Worldview; NASA Landsat overview).
- Open NASA Worldview and search for a place or navigate the map.
- Set the date of interest. Depending on the layer, you can explore a date or a time sequence.
- Turn layers on or off and choose an available visualization, such as natural color, infrared, or an environmental layer.
- Set the map extent around the area you want, then use the image-download control.
- Choose the area, date, layers, dimensions, and file format offered by the current interface and download the export.
The result is convenient for a presentation or quick visual review, but it may be a rendered image rather than the original multiband product. Do not use a rendered export as if it contained calibrated reflectance values or full sensor metadata.
Download free Sentinel-2 imagery with Copernicus Browser
Sentinel-2 is a useful starting point when you want free, current optical imagery for GIS, environmental work, or a map. Its bands have different native resolutions: some are 10 m, others 20 m or 60 m. Check the selected band and product rather than assuming every Sentinel-2 layer is 10 m. Copernicus provides Sentinel products through the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem; product details are available in the Sentinel-2 documentation.
- Open Copernicus Browser. Sign in or register if the selected download workflow requires it.
- Find your area by place name, coordinates, map navigation, or an area of interest where supported.
- Set a date range and select the Sentinel-2 collection.
- Use cloud coverage as a filter, then inspect candidate previews over your actual location. A scene-level cloud percentage does not tell you exactly whether your property or study area is cloud-free.
- Choose the product level appropriate to the work. Level-1C provides top-of-atmosphere reflectance; Level-2A provides bottom-of-atmosphere, or surface-reflectance, data.
- For a simple visual, use the image export and set the area, visualization or band combination, dimensions, and available format.
- For GIS or analysis, obtain the actual product rather than only a JPEG or PNG rendering. If you add a product to Data Workspace, select it and choose Download. Some products may need to be ordered or retrieved first; see the Data Workspace instructions.
A rendered export is smaller and easier to use in a slide or poster. A full product can be much larger, but includes the source bands and supporting metadata needed for analysis. The Copernicus Browser documentation describes its search and download functions.
Download Landsat imagery using USGS EarthExplorer
Landsat is a strong choice for historical land-change work and for users who want a long archive. NASA describes the record as extending back to 1972, and Landsat data are available without charge. Landsat is medium-resolution imagery, not a source for close-up property inspection (NASA overview; USGS Landsat data access).

A product commonly includes GeoTIFF bands, metadata, quality-assurance data, and supporting files. For multiple scenes, use the EarthExplorer bulk-download workflow; USGS says its Bulk Download Web Application works in Chrome-based browsers and Microsoft Edge. See the EarthExplorer overview and EarthExplorer help for current details.
When free imagery is not detailed enough
Free Sentinel-2 and Landsat products are valuable for vegetation, coastlines, fields, regional change, and urban expansion. They generally cannot show individual cars, people, roof features, or narrow property details. For those needs, look for a commercial very-high-resolution product or aerial imagery. A small pixel size still does not guarantee that every object will be visible: haze, shadows, clouds, viewing angle, and image quality all affect what can be distinguished.
Recommended Free Tools
One commercial example is Planet SkySat, which Planet describes as sampled at 50 cm per pixel when orthorectified. Its offering includes archive imagery and tasking options; available products and access depend on the account and order. See Planet’s SkySat documentation.
Planet’s pricing page displayed SkySat archive at $6/km², flexible tasking at $12/km², and assured tasking at $40/km² when checked August 18, 2026. Treat these as observed pricing signals, not a quote or permanent rates: plans, minimums, credits, geographic availability, and terms can change. Check Planet’s current pricing and confirm the cost and license for your order.
A typical Planet ordering path is to sign in, search and preview scenes, add suitable imagery, choose Order Scenes, select direct download or delivery to a data collection, choose assets and any processing such as clipping or compositing, and submit. Planet says ordering requires a plan with download quota; high-resolution archive access for SkySat, Pelican, and Tanager uses Tasking Credits. Depending on product and account, delivery formats can include GeoTIFF or TIFF plus RPC, Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF, and NITF 2.1. Check Planet’s ordering documentation for current options.

Archive imagery is an image already captured on a past date. Tasking requests a new collection, but a request does not guarantee an image on a specific day: weather, location, collection constraints, and tasking terms matter. If the date is critical, confirm the collection window and delivery terms before ordering.

Open and check a download in QGIS
QGIS is a free GIS application that can open common georeferenced raster formats. A basic check helps you catch a wrong projection, missing band, or plain image export before relying on it.
- Install QGIS and extract the downloaded archive if it is packaged as ZIP, TAR, or a mission-specific product directory.
- In QGIS, add the raster layer and select the GeoTIFF or supported raster file. Mission products may contain multiple band files; load the bands you need.
- Inspect the layer’s properties for its coordinate reference system (CRS), pixel size, extent, and data type. Make sure the project uses the correct CRS or that QGIS is reprojecting the layer appropriately.
- For natural color, assign the appropriate red, green, and blue bands for that sensor. Band numbers vary by mission, so consult the product metadata instead of assuming the same band order across sensors.
- Use a false-color combination only when it serves your purpose, such as highlighting vegetation. A different color display changes appearance, not native spatial resolution.
- If needed, clip the raster to an area of interest and export a georeferenced image. Keep the original product and metadata alongside the export.
For measurement or repeatable analysis, use the source product rather than a screenshot or display-only export. Preserve the acquisition date, scene or product ID, sensor, processing level, CRS, cloud metadata, license terms, and any processing settings.

The image looks blurry
Check the native pixel size and whether you downloaded a preview instead of the product. Haze, clouds, JPEG compression, resampling, a poor band combination, or excessive zoom can also make an image look soft. Try another acquisition with clearer conditions or use a genuinely finer-resolution source. Enlarging or sharpening an image may change its appearance, but it does not create new measured detail.
There are no clear scenes for the date
Expand the date range or relax the cloud filter, then inspect the target area manually. A low scene-wide cloud percentage can still mean clouds over the precise location you care about. If clouds or darkness are the main obstacle, radar imagery such as Sentinel-1 can be useful for some flood or deformation tasks, but it is not a drop-in natural-color photograph and requires different interpretation. If a specific date is essential, investigate commercial tasking while accounting for weather and collection limitations.

The download button is missing
Check whether you are signed in and whether the product is only available in preview, needs to be ordered or retrieved, or requires download quota. EarthExplorer requires sign-in for downloads or orders; Copernicus Data Workspace requires a registered user; Planet ordering requires a plan with download quota. Also check browser download permissions. See the relevant EarthExplorer, Copernicus Data Workspace, or Planet ordering guidance.
The file will not open
Identify the file type first. Extract archives, open geospatial rasters in QGIS rather than a standard photo viewer, and make sure you selected a raster band within the product. Some formats, including JPEG2000, need compatible GIS support. If the file appears incomplete, download it again and compare its size with the provider’s listing.
The image appears in the wrong place
Check the raster CRS and project CRS. A plain JPEG or PNG may have no georeferencing; a world file or RPC file may be required for some products. Keep accompanying metadata files together, load the source as a georeferenced raster, and confirm the coordinates before measuring or exporting.
The image is sharp but not reliable for measurement
It may be a resampled map tile, a contrast-stretched visualization, a pan-sharpened composite, or a screenshot. Use the original georeferenced product and its metadata for measurement. Pan-sharpening can improve visual detail but does not make the result equivalent to native multispectral measurements at that apparent resolution.
Quick recommendations
- “I need a picture for a presentation.” Start with NASA Worldview and download a rendered image. Check the layer’s date and reuse terms.
- “I need free imagery for vegetation or land change.” Use Sentinel-2 through Copernicus Browser, choose a suitable date and product level, and download the product for GIS work.
- “I need to compare a location across decades.” Search Landsat in EarthExplorer and compare scenes from appropriate dates and seasons.
- “I need to see individual buildings.” Free 10–30 m imagery will not meet that need. Check commercial very-high-resolution imagery or aerial orthophotos.
- “I need a recent image after an event.” Search the available archive first. If no suitable scene exists, investigate tasking, but confirm the expected window, weather risk, cost, and license.
- “I need data for measurement or analysis.” Download the original georeferenced product with metadata, not just a rendered map or screenshot.
Check reuse rights before publishing
Free access does not mean every image or layer can be reused without conditions. The data source, visualization, basemap, processing, and intended use may have different terms. Before publishing, using imagery commercially, or redistributing source files, read the provider’s current license and attribution requirements. Keep attribution and product identifiers with the image so you can document where it came from.
