Google left a large office in San Francisco’s Spear Tower in 2025, but it did not leave the city. The move involved about 300,000 to 320,000 square feet at One Market Plaza—not every building in the complex or all of Google’s San Francisco offices.
The headline dates to a plan reported in May 2024: Google would not renew its lease for a substantial block of space in Spear Tower, part of the waterfront One Market Plaza complex. Later reporting confirmed that Google vacated the tower after its lease expired in 2025. Google’s office directory still lists three San Francisco locations, so describing the move as a citywide exit would be misleading.
At a glance: The affected space was approximately 300,000–320,000 square feet. Google reportedly planned to consolidate some operations at nearby 345 Spear Street, but available reporting does not establish that every employee moved there.

What Google actually left
One Market Plaza is a multi-building office complex at 1 Market Street. Google’s major departure was from Spear Tower, not necessarily from every part of One Market Plaza. Reports put the vacated area at roughly 300,000 to 320,000 square feet; the difference reflects rounded figures rather than a meaningful conflict. The San Francisco Chronicle reported the planned non-renewal in May 2024, and later coverage described the block as approximately 320,000 square feet.

That distinction matters: leaving one large lease in a complex is not the same as abandoning the city—or even necessarily every address associated with the complex.
From a 2024 plan to a 2025 departure
- May 2024: Google’s plan not to renew its Spear Tower lease was reported.
- 2025: Google vacated the tower after the lease ended, according to subsequent reporting.
- 2026: One Market Plaza was pursuing new tenants and upgrades, while Google continued to list San Francisco locations.
The 2024 announcement was about a planned move; it should not be presented as though Google left the building that year. The Chronicle’s June 2026 account and The San Francisco Standard’s reporting describe the later vacancy and the property’s efforts to attract tenants.

Google’s official office-location directory lists these San Francisco addresses:

The listing is strong evidence that Google has not announced a complete departure from San Francisco. It does not disclose how much space Google leases at each address, how many people work there, or whether every listed site has the same level of day-to-day activity.
In 2024, the Chronicle reported that Google expected to consolidate some operations at nearby 345 Spear Street, where the company reportedly leased about 400,000 square feet. That account does not show that all Spear Tower staff or functions transferred there. Google’s current directory confirms 345 Spear remains a listed location, but not its staffing or exact occupancy.
Why did Google reduce its space?
The move fits the broader pattern of companies reassessing office needs after the pandemic-era shift in workplace use. It also took place amid a weak San Francisco office market and efforts by major tenants to consolidate their real-estate footprints. Those are useful context, not proof of a single cause.

The available reporting does not establish that crime, homelessness, remote work alone, layoffs, or any one political issue drove Google’s decision. Without a direct, supported explanation from the company, attributing the move to one of those factors would go beyond the evidence.
What happened to the space?
Google’s vacated block became part of One Market Plaza’s broader leasing challenge. The complex’s owners have marketed the property with upgrades and amenities aimed at attracting tenants, while new businesses—including law firms—have taken space. The Real Deal reported new leasing activity in February 2026; the June coverage from the Chronicle and Standard also describes efforts to reposition the property after major tenants reduced or ended occupancy.

The wider market picture is mixed. San Francisco was securing large office leases from some AI companies in 2026, even as significant vacancies and tenant reductions persisted. That points to selective demand—not proof that every building or neighborhood has recovered. Premium, well-located properties and older or less competitive offices can face very different prospects.
For One Market Plaza, Google’s departure was a consequential loss of a large tenant block. For Google’s presence in San Francisco, it was a consolidation of space rather than a full corporate withdrawal.
