Deal status: The PlayStation Portal’s $179 price was a real U.S. holiday promotion in November and December 2025, but it is not a currently verified August 2026 offer. The discount cut roughly $20.99—about 10.5%—from the then-standard $199.99 price. Unless a retailer independently relaunches it, treat $179 as a historical price and check the live listing before buying.
Where the $179 price appeared
Contemporary deal coverage found the Portal at about $179 at Walmart and Amazon, with comparable holiday pricing or availability at GameStop, PlayStation Direct, Target and Best Buy. GameSpot reported both the white and Midnight Black models at $179 on November 22, 2025; TechRadar still found a $179 Walmart listing on December 1. GameStop’s holiday flyer listed $179.99 from November 21 through December 24.
Retail prices varied by day and retailer: some listings were reported at $178, $179, $179.99 or $180. Shipping, taxes, stock and whether a listing was sold directly by the retailer could change the checkout total. What the discount was—and was not
At $179, the saving versus $199.99 was $20.99, or approximately 10.5%. At $179.99, it was $20, or about 10%. That was a worthwhile reduction on a device that generally stayed near list price, but it was not a clearance-level bargain. “One of the lowest widely reported new-unit prices” is more defensible than an unqualified “lowest price ever,” particularly when open-box, used and marketplace prices are mixed into price-history pages.

The Portal is a remote player, not a standalone PS5 handheld
PlayStation Portal streams compatible games from a paired PS5 over Wi-Fi. It has an 8-inch 1080p LCD and can display gameplay at up to 60 frames per second, depending on the game and network. Its integrated DualSense-style controls provide haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in supported titles.
For ordinary Remote Play, you need a PS5, a PlayStation Network account and a compatible game installed on that console. The PS5 must be online, powered on or configured for Rest Mode, and paired with the Portal. The Portal does not install games locally, provide offline play or replace the console. Do you need PlayStation Plus?
Not for standard Remote Play. You can stream games installed on your own PS5 without a PlayStation Plus subscription. However, a game that requires PS Plus for online multiplayer still requires the appropriate membership.
Portal also supports cloud streaming in supported regions, but that is a separate feature requiring an active PlayStation Plus Premium subscription and an adult account. Eligible selections include certain PS5 games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, plus selected digital PS5 games in your library. Cloud streaming can work while the PS5 is switched off or being used by another account holder, but it does not make the Portal a fully independent console. Sony’s current requirements and restrictions are listed at PlayStation Support.
Cloud streaming is limited to eligible titles. Sony’s support documentation says PS3 and PS4 games are not currently supported through Portal cloud streaming, and catalogs vary by country, subscription and time. Party, messaging, broadcasting, Share Screen, Share Play, Game Help and some other system features may be unavailable or restricted. You also cannot purchase or manage a PlayStation Plus subscription directly on the Portal.

Network requirements matter more than the sale price
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum to start a cloud-streaming session, 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Sony also recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better Remote Play experience. Those figures are not guarantees: latency, Wi-Fi interference, router placement, upload performance and other household traffic can determine whether controls feel responsive.
- Connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet when possible.
- Test the Portal near the PS5 before relying on it in another room or away from home.
- Reduce competing downloads and video streams during play.
- Test the actual hotel, school, workplace or airport network you plan to use; captive-portal logins may require a phone or tablet.
Sony recommends completing initial setup on home Wi-Fi. Public networks that require additional validation may work on Portal system software 3.0.1 or later, but support depends on the network’s login method.
What games work?
Remote Play supports compatible PS5 and PS4 games installed on your PS5. Games requiring a PS VR headset or certain specialist peripherals are excluded, as are games streamed to the PS5 through PS Plus under Sony’s listed Remote Play limitations. Cloud streaming has its own, narrower list of eligible PS5 titles; never assume your entire library is available.

The historical price made sense for an existing PS5 owner who shares a television, wants to play from another room, or values a dedicated screen and full DualSense controls over a phone-and-controller setup. It was especially appealing to Premium subscribers interested in supported cloud games.
It was a poor fit for anyone seeking a standalone, offline handheld, anyone without a PS5 who does not specifically want Premium cloud streaming, or anyone with unreliable Wi-Fi. It is also less compelling if you already own a good phone, controller grip and remote-play setup.

Audio and box contents
The standard package includes the Portal, a USB cable and documentation. Do not assume a case, screen protector, wall charger, earbuds or headset is included; verify any retailer bundle. Audio works through the built-in speakers, a 3.5mm wired connection or compatible PlayStation Link devices. Ordinary Bluetooth headphones are not the intended wireless option. - Confirm you own a PS5 if Remote Play is your main use.
- Update both devices and enable Remote Play on the PS5.
- Set the PS5 to Rest Mode if you want to wake it remotely.
- Pair the Portal with the same PlayStation account and test it at home.
- For cloud streaming, confirm Premium, an adult account, a supported region and game eligibility.
- At checkout, verify new condition, seller, return policy, warranty, color, shipping and delivery date.
Verdict
At $179, the Portal was a good—but modestly discounted—purchase for PS5 owners with dependable Wi-Fi. It was not a PS5 replacement or a conventional handheld, and the $179 promotion belonged to the 2025 Black Friday/Cyber Monday holiday period. If you find a new unit at that price again, the deal is attractive for the right setup; otherwise, compare the live price against the additional cost of a PS5, Premium subscription and any accessories you actually need.
