Google’s Cross-device services are no longer just a rumored Pixel feature. Google now documents them for supported Android phones and tablets running Android 11 or later: nearby devices using the same Google Account can share internet access, connect to a known Wi-Fi network, or move a supported video call between screens. They are not Pixel-exclusive, but Android version, manufacturer, app support, and device eligibility affect what you can use.
What are Google Cross-device services?
Cross-device services let nearby personal Android devices associated with at least one common Google Account recognize one another and offer supported actions. Google documents device groups, call casting, Instant Hotspot, and automatic Wi-Fi sharing as parts of this experience. The feature is a Google/Android capability, not a single Pixel-only app.
It is distinct from Quick Share, which is primarily for transferring files and other content; Google Cast, which sends media to compatible displays and speakers; and Phone Hub, which connects an Android phone with a Chromebook. Cross-device services are also not the same as ordinary Bluetooth pairing or manually setting up a hotspot.
Which features are available?
Call casting
Call casting can move a supported video call to another nearby eligible device signed in to the same Google Account. Google’s 2024 announcement described moving a Google Meet call between an Android phone, tablet, or web browser. The calling app must support the feature and provide a relevant device-switching or cast control. This is not a universal handoff for cellular calls or every video-calling app.

Instant Hotspot
Instant Hotspot lets a nearby personal device connect to another device’s mobile-data hotspot without manually entering its password. The device providing mobile data may show a notification that its connection is in use, and the hotspot may turn off when no device remains connected. Connecting this way does not bypass carrier hotspot limits, mobile-data charges, or coverage problems.
Automatic Wi-Fi sharing
If one same-account device has already joined a Wi-Fi network, it can help another nearby device connect without the user typing the password. The receiving device saves the Wi-Fi password after connecting. This does not apply to open networks or networks whose credentials cannot be shared.
Device groups
Devices signed in to the same Google Account can appear in a group for cross-device interactions. That is convenient for a personal phone-and-tablet setup, but consider the account relationship before enabling the service on a shared, borrowed, work, or family device.

Is it Pixel-only? Requirements and compatibility
No. Google’s current help documentation describes Cross-device services for supported Android phones and tablets generally. Its stated baseline is Android 11 or later, the same Google Account on participating devices, Bluetooth enabled, nearby devices, and Cross-device services enabled. Android Go devices are not supported. Android 14 and newer offer more functionality; Android 11–13 devices may have fewer ways to start a connection, with notifications used for some actions instead of newer settings interfaces.

“Android 11 or later” is a baseline, not a guarantee that every function appears on every device. Manufacturer software, account configuration, app support, region, and Google Play services availability can all affect the experience. On Samsung devices, check Samsung’s own controls as well as Google settings.
How to turn Cross-device services on
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- If shown, tap All services.
- Tap Devices & sharing, then Cross-device services.
- Turn on Use cross-device services.
- Repeat on each participating device, then enable the individual options you want, such as Call casting, Internet sharing, Instant hotspot, or Automatically share Wi-Fi, where available.
Some devices omit the All services step, and manufacturer menus can differ. Google’s setup instructions are at support.google.com/android. If an option is missing, do not assume that installing an unofficial Play services APK will enable it; the early 2024 discovery concerned an unreleased interface, not a supported installation method.

How to use the features
Connect to an Instant Hotspot
- Keep the devices near each other, signed in to the same Google Account, with Bluetooth enabled and Cross-device services turned on.
- On the receiving device, tap the notification offering to use the other device’s hotspot, then tap Connect. On supported devices, you can also open Settings > Network & internet > Internet and choose the other device’s available instant hotspot.
- Check the host phone’s notification to see that another device is using its connection.
The exact route depends on Android version and manufacturer. Google says the newer settings-list experience has more functionality on Android 14 and later; older supported devices may rely on a notification.

Join a Wi-Fi network shared by another device
- On both devices, enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, use the same Google Account, and turn on Cross-device services and automatic Wi-Fi sharing.
- When the receiving device is offline, wait for the Connect to Wi-Fi network notification and tap Connect.
- If supported, you can instead select the network in the receiving device’s internet settings.

Move a video call
- Start or join a call in an app that supports cross-device casting.
- Look for that app’s Cast, device-switching, or similar control.
- Choose a nearby eligible device using the same Google Account and confirm if prompted.
If the control is absent, the app or call configuration may not support the feature. Google’s original May 2024 Android announcement used Meet as its example; it did not promise call transfer in every app.

Privacy and account considerations
Cross-device services trade some separation between devices for convenience. Google says nearby devices may see a device name and some device information when Bluetooth and Cross-device services are enabled. Apps generally receive the nearby-device list only after you select a device; information about the selected device may then be shared with the app.
Before turning the feature on, check which devices are signed in to the relevant Google Account. Avoid enabling it casually on a shared or work-managed device if you do not want it participating in a personal device group. You can turn off Use cross-device services in the same settings area. If an unfamiliar device appears, review the Google Account signed in on your devices and account sessions, then disable the service on devices that should not participate.

The Cross-device services menu is missing
- Check that the phone or tablet is not running Android Go and meets Google’s Android-version requirements.
- Confirm you are looking under Settings > Google > Devices & sharing; some versions place the option behind All services.
- Check that the expected Google Account is on the device and that Google Play services is current.
- Remember that manufacturer menus and feature availability vary. A missing menu does not mean an unofficial APK is a safe or supported fix.
The devices do not appear to each other
- Confirm both devices use the same Google Account, are nearby, and have Bluetooth enabled.
- Turn on Cross-device services and the specific feature on both devices.
- For Wi-Fi sharing, enable Wi-Fi; for Instant Hotspot, confirm the host has cellular data and hotspot capability.
- Check for Android Go, work-profile, or enterprise restrictions, and account for Samsung’s separate implementations.
Instant Hotspot connects but there is no internet
Check cellular coverage and data service on the host phone, then check whether the carrier plan permits hotspot use or whether a data limit has been reached. A successful local connection cannot supply internet if the host cannot access it.

Call casting is not offered
Confirm that the app and call support device switching. Then check that both devices are nearby, on the same Google Account, and have call casting enabled. Do not assume ordinary phone calls or every Meet, WhatsApp, or Zoom call can be transferred.
What the 2024 Pixel headline got wrong—and what is still separate
A February 2024 report identified an unreleased Google Play services interface with proposed call casting, Wi-Fi sharing, and hotspot sharing. Google subsequently announced cross-device functions in May 2024; its release notes later recorded an Instant Hotspot milestone in Google Play services v24.28 and an updated settings interface in v25.24. The early report was a useful glimpse, not proof of a public launch date or final compatibility list. Google’s current consumer support pages are the better guide to what it documents now.
Do not confuse these consumer functions with Continue On, a separate feature described in Android developer documentation for Android 17 beta. Its developer setup calls for compatible Pixel devices, same-account setup, Bluetooth, and a Cross-Device Services beta. That future-facing developer feature is not a prerequisite for the already documented hotspot, Wi-Fi-sharing, and call-casting functions. See the Continue On developer documentation.
Who should use it?
Cross-device services are most useful if you regularly move between a personal Android phone and tablet, want a second device to get online without retyping hotspot credentials, or use a supported video-calling app across screens. They offer little to someone with one device, mismatched Google Accounts, Android Go, or apps without call-switching support. Samsung users may prefer the familiar Galaxy implementations.
The feature is a convenience, not a reason by itself to buy a Pixel or another device. Whether it works for you depends on the devices and apps you already use, their Android versions, and how you want your Google Account devices grouped.
