Xiaomi’s Android 11 rollout did not produce one universal bug across every phone. Problems varied by model, region and MIUI build. The most serious documented case was reports that some Mi A3 phones became unable to boot after updating; other owners reported battery drain, crashes, notification delays, storage-access changes, UI glitches and connectivity problems. A reported symptom alone does not prove Android 11 caused it.
This is an archival tracker for Android 11-based MIUI releases, not a guide to current Xiaomi rollouts. Xiaomi’s software ecosystem has moved on to HyperOS. Historical reports below are not evidence that Xiaomi is still distributing Android 11 or that the same issues affect current devices.
How to read this Android 11 tracker
A Xiaomi update can change more than the Android version. Android is the underlying operating system; MIUI is Xiaomi’s interface and system software. The full build, ROM region, security patch and Google Play system update are separate details. Global, EEA, India, China and other regional ROMs can arrive at different times and include different components.

Do not treat an issue reported on one phone or ROM as a Xiaomi-wide defect.

Before comparing a report with your phone, record the exact model and model number, MIUI version, Android version, full build number, security patch date, ROM region, bootloader state and whether the phone is rooted or modified. Also note when the symptom began, how often it occurs, and whether a reset or clean installation changed it.
Rollout and issue status by device
There is not enough device-and-build-specific evidence here to publish a reliable rollout inventory or mark individual Android 11 builds as fixed. An update’s availability on one regional ROM does not establish availability on another. The entries below therefore distinguish documented historical reports from symptoms that remain unverified as firmware defects.
| Device | Region/ROM | Previous software | Android 11 build | Rollout date/state | Reported issue | Evidence and latest status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mi A3 | Not stated in the cited contemporary report | Not stated | Android 11 update; full build not stated | Reported in late December 2020; some owners said rollout reached their phones | Some phones reportedly became unable to boot | Reported; contemporary community coverage said Xiaomi acknowledged the issue and directed affected owners to service centers. No specific resolving build is established here. Contemporary report |
| Xiaomi Mi 10 5G | Not stated in the cited user post | Not stated | Android 11; full build not stated | One user reported receiving it; staged-rollout status not independently established | Community post discusses instability, file access and System UI complaints | Reported, not confirmed or shown fixed for a named build. | Redmi Note 9S | Xiaomi.eu ROM according to the post title; precise build details should be verified against the device | Not stated | Android 11; full build not stated | Historical user warning in February 2021; not an official rollout notice | Compatibility complaints | Reported, not authoritative confirmation of a Xiaomi firmware defect. User report |
For a useful tracker entry, include the full build and region along with the symptom, reproduction steps, severity, workaround, any named fix and the date the status was checked. Label evidence carefully: confirmed means acknowledged by Xiaomi or the relevant vendor, or strongly reproducible; probable means multiple independent reports match a model and build; reported means limited credible accounts; unverified means evidence is insufficient or conflicting. Call an issue resolved only when a later build or vendor change is identified.

In late December 2020, some Mi A3 owners reported that the Android 11 update left their phones unable to boot. Contemporary reporting said Xiaomi acknowledged the problem and directed affected users to service centers. This was not a claim that every updated Mi A3 failed. The contemporary report is historical community coverage, not a current service bulletin.

- Boot loop, recovery accessible: Recovery may offer a data-clearing option, but clearing data erases the phone. If data matters, do not select it before weighing data-preserving service options.
- Fastboot accessible: Do not flash a package chosen only because its name looks similar. Firmware must match the exact model and compatible region, and flashing can erase data or require an unlocked bootloader.
- Black screen with charging indicators: This does not by itself establish whether the operating system or display has failed. Avoid treating it as an ordinary update slowdown.
- No recovery, no fastboot and no normal boot: Stop experimenting and contact Xiaomi or an authorized service provider.
- Computer recognizes the device or EDL-level repair is mentioned: Recognition is not proof that consumer recovery is possible. Authorized repair may be required; do not use unauthorized EDL services.
Tell service personnel if the phone was rooted, bootloader-unlocked or flashed. If it holds irreplaceable data, say that preserving data is the priority before authorizing a reset or reflash.
Commonly reported symptoms—and what they do not prove
Battery drain and heat
After a major update, app optimization and background indexing can temporarily increase activity. Persistent drain can also involve a particular app, radio or modem behavior, or a battery already nearing end of life. Note whether the phone is hot while idle, whether mobile data or 5G is active, whether the problem started immediately after the update and whether it persists in safe mode. Compare behavior over at least one ordinary charge cycle; a single warm session is not enough to establish a firmware defect.
Freezes, random restarts and boot loops
Separate a one-time restart from repeated reboots, freezes during normal use, a loop at the Xiaomi logo, or a loop that began after unlocking, rooting or flashing. Xiaomi’s current support guidance says a device can take 30 to 120 minutes to process data after a major update, particularly when many apps are installed. This is current general guidance, not proof that every Android 11-era device or build followed the same timing. If the phone becomes excessively hot or remains unable to boot, disconnect it and seek service. Xiaomi’s guidance on crashes and rebooting
System UI, launcher and gestures
Historical reports include System UI crashes, home-screen redraws, stuttering animations, notification-shade glitches, missing icons or widgets, changed lock-screen behavior and inconsistent full-screen gestures. To narrow a report, note whether it occurs with Xiaomi’s default launcher or a third-party launcher, with navigation buttons as well as gestures, and with a particular theme or dark mode. A launcher or theme conflict is not equivalent to a confirmed Android platform bug.
Delayed notifications and background activity
MIUI battery and background controls can affect whether apps deliver notifications promptly. For an affected app, check its notification permission, background data, autostart permission and battery setting; where available, test “No restrictions” for that app. Also note whether battery saver or security tools are active and whether messages arrive only after opening the app. Without a model, MIUI build and affected app version, delayed notifications should not be labeled an Android 11 defect.

Storage and file access
Android 11 introduced scoped-storage behavior that changed how apps access shared storage. An app may request different permissions or lose access to folders it previously used; file managers may also behave differently. That can reflect Android’s storage policy or an app that has not adopted the newer APIs, rather than a Xiaomi file-manager fault. Reports about restricted access to Android/data or Android/obb need the app, file manager and build identified before attribution. A historical Mi 10 user report discusses file-access complaints but does not establish a universal defect. Mi 10 user report

Camera and connectivity
Track camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, mobile data and VoLTE separately: these may depend on device-specific drivers, modem firmware, carrier provisioning or regional configuration. For network failures, record the Wi-Fi band and router, country and carrier, SIM slot, VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling state, and whether toggling airplane mode temporarily restores service. Include whether the fault appears after reboot or only after the phone wakes from sleep. The available historical evidence does not establish a single Android 11-wide camera or connectivity defect.
App crashes and compatibility
An app crashing on a Xiaomi Android 11 phone does not by itself identify Xiaomi firmware as the cause. Record the app name and version; compare with other Android devices if possible; check whether the app has an Android 11 compatibility update; and note whether clearing its cache or data, updating Google Play services, or changing MIUI optimization settings changes the result. Clearing app data may erase local content, so check the app’s own backup options first.
What to do before installing an available update
- Back up first. Save photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data and local files. Cloud sync does not guarantee every app’s local data is recoverable.
- Verify the package. Confirm that the OTA is intended for your exact model and region, and that Xiaomi has not paused or withdrawn it.
- Record the starting state. Note Android and MIUI versions, build number, security patch date, region, free storage and bootloader/modification status.
- Prepare access. Charge the phone adequately, use a reliable connection and keep Xiaomi and Google account credentials available; a reset may require account verification.
- Avoid mismatched firmware. Do not install a package intended for another model or ROM region.
Updating is reasonable when the OTA is official for the exact device and region, the phone is backed up and there is no credible critical-failure report for that specific build. Waiting can be prudent if the phone is mission-critical, has no usable backup, or credible boot-failure reports concern the same model and build. Delaying may also mean delaying security fixes, so neither “always update” nor “never update” is a sound blanket rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting after the update
If the phone is usable but slow or warm
- Allow time for post-update processing, while monitoring temperature. Xiaomi’s current guidance gives 30 to 120 minutes for data processing after a major update; stop waiting and disconnect it if it becomes excessively hot. Xiaomi support guidance
- Restart once the phone is usable, then update apps through Google Play.
- Review battery usage for an app consuming unusually high power and test safe mode if a third-party app may be involved.
- If the problem persists, submit a report through Xiaomi’s Help and Feedback/User Feedback tool. Xiaomi says feedback can include user logs to help investigate recurring issues. Xiaomi troubleshooting guidance
If it repeatedly reboots
- Do not keep waiting if the device overheats. If it remains cool and appears to be processing an update, allow a reasonable period rather than interrupting it immediately.
- Try safe mode where the device supports it. If it boots there, remove recently installed or incompatible third-party apps when possible.
- If it stabilizes, back up important data immediately.
- Use recovery’s data-clearing option only after understanding that it returns the phone to factory state and erases user data. Xiaomi’s support instructions warn that recovery clearing can require the previously linked Xiaomi account at first boot. Xiaomi recovery and troubleshooting guidance
- If recovery does not help, or the phone cannot boot reliably, contact authorized service rather than repeatedly resetting or flashing.
If data appears to have disappeared
First distinguish files that were never synchronized from apps hidden or disabled in safe mode, an app-specific data problem, a factory reset, a reflash or possible storage failure. Xiaomi says that if all data disappears and the phone returns to initial setup, a factory reset or flashing operation may have occurred; unsynchronized local data may not be recoverable. Recovery, factory reset, rollback and flashing
Recovery options differ by model. Xiaomi documents Volume Up + Power to enter recovery on supported phones, where a data-clearing option may be available. Clearing data is destructive; recovery interfaces and labels can vary, and a Xiaomi 12 support page should not be assumed to describe every Android 11-era model exactly. Xiaomi recovery instructions for Xiaomi 12
A factory reset may remove corrupted user state or a third-party conflict, but it does not demonstrate that Xiaomi fixed a defective firmware build. Back up first and confirm account credentials. If the phone contains irreplaceable data, prioritize data-preserving diagnosis before resetting.
Xiaomi’s current support documentation says ordinary supported system rollback is not available. Manual flashing is not a routine consumer fix: it can require an unlocked bootloader, erase data, and fail or worsen the problem if firmware does not match the exact model and compatible region. Do not treat Mi Flash or unauthorized EDL flashing as a guaranteed recovery path. Historical Xiaomi instructions about reinstalling official OTA packages varied by device and software generation, so they should not be applied blindly to a legacy handset. How to report a useful bug and track a fix
A useful report lets someone compare like with like. Submit the issue through Xiaomi’s feedback tool where possible, and include the exact model, region/ROM, full build, Android and MIUI versions, security patch date, app version if relevant, steps to reproduce, frequency, screenshots or logs, recent modifications and the result of safe-mode or reset testing. Do not post private account details or sensitive log contents publicly. Xiaomi’s support guidance describes submitting feedback and logs for recurring issues. Xiaomi feedback guidance

To decide whether a later release fixed an issue, compare the full build and region rather than just the Android version. Look for a vendor acknowledgement, a changelog naming the defect, or repeated reports that the same reproduction steps no longer fail on a named later build. A reset that helps one phone can indicate a local-state conflict; it is not by itself proof of a firmware fix.
