Some Galaxy Watch owners running One UI 8 Watch have reported third-party watch faces that look ghosted when the screen wakes from Always On Display (AOD). Active-face graphics appear, but dimmed AOD elements remain layered over them. Samsung has not publicly confirmed a fix date for this specific rendering problem, so treat claims that a patch is coming “soon”—including a reported January 12 date—with caution.
What the watch-face bug looks like
The face may look normal while the watch is dimmed. When you raise your wrist, tap the screen, or otherwise wake it, the bright interactive face appears, but parts of the dimmed AOD image can remain on top. Hands, numerals, complications, or background graphics may look doubled, translucent, or partly faded. Switching modes, changing faces, or restarting may clear the image temporarily; none of those steps establishes that the underlying issue is fixed.
This is a reported transition-rendering problem, not simply a face that has vanished. Coverage describes it mainly with third-party faces and says Samsung’s preinstalled faces are less commonly affected. That is a pattern, not a guarantee: a separate AOD, display, or update problem can affect stock faces too.

Reports cover Galaxy Watch 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and Galaxy Watch Ultra models running One UI 8 Watch, which is based on Wear OS 6. They do not show that every owner or every face is affected. Update availability and timing can differ by model, region, carrier, and Bluetooth or LTE configuration, so check the software installed on your own watch rather than assuming a model has received the update.

Reports of similar behavior on Pixel Watches suggest the issue may involve Wear OS 6 transition behavior rather than a defect unique to Samsung hardware. That does not establish a confirmed technical root cause or mean every Wear OS 6 watch is affected. (Android Authority’s report; SamMobile’s report.)
Why Wear OS 6 may be involved
Wear OS 6 changes aspects of ambient-mode behavior and supports animated transitions between ambient and interactive states through Watch Face Format 4. A plausible explanation is that a transition does not finish cleanly before the display enters a lower-power state, leaving pieces of both visual states on screen. Google documents the platform changes, but neither Google nor Samsung has publicly confirmed that sequence as the root cause of this particular reported bug.

Is a fix coming soon?
There is no verified public release date for a fix to this exact third-party-face ghosting problem. One report mentions January 12, but the date is written as January 12, 2025—before the same report’s January 2, 2026 update. That conflict makes the date unreliable; it should not be treated as a confirmed schedule.

Samsung community moderators have said a software patch was being prepared for certain Galaxy Watch 4 AOD and sensor-related problems. That is evidence of work on a related issue, not confirmation that the patch fixes this separate watch-face transition bug. (Samsung Community discussion.) A future One UI Watch or Wear OS update may address the rendering behavior, but Samsung has not publicly confirmed when—or whether a particular upcoming update will do so.
What to try on your watch
- Switch temporarily to a Samsung-installed face. In the Galaxy Wearable app on your paired phone, open Watch faces, select a preinstalled Samsung face, and apply it. Wake the watch several times to see whether the artifact returns. This is the leading reported workaround for the third-party transition problem, not a guaranteed remedy for every display issue. Menu labels may vary by app version.
- Turn off AOD as a test. On the watch, look in Settings under Display for Always On Display. If the ghosting stops with AOD disabled, that supports a link to the AOD transition. The trade-off is that the low-power clock will no longer remain visible when the watch is idle; settings and labels can vary by model and software version.
- Restart the watch. Restarting can clear a stuck rendering state, but recurrence after waking the watch means it was a temporary workaround, not a confirmed repair. Samsung’s general troubleshooting guidance for frozen or unresponsive watches also recommends a reboot for those symptoms.
- Check for updates. On the phone, try Galaxy Wearable → Watch settings → Watch software update. Also check the Play Store or Galaxy Store for updates to Galaxy Wearable and the watch-face app. An update is not proof of a fix unless its release notes or credible follow-up specifically identify one.
- Send a useful error report if it persists. Include the watch model and Bluetooth/LTE version, paired-phone model, One UI Watch and Wear OS versions, face name and developer, whether AOD is on, and a screen recording or photos. Note whether switching faces or restarting clears the artifact. Samsung’s community guidance on reporting watch problems describes the Galaxy Wearable or relevant beta-support route.
A factory reset is not a sensible first response to an intermittent face-rendering issue: the available evidence does not establish that it fixes the bug, and resetting adds setup and data-restoration work.

How to tell it from other watch problems
The transition bug is more likely when the face remains visible but looks layered or ghosted specifically as the watch moves between dimmed AOD and active display—and when changing from a third-party face to a stock face stops it.

Samsung notes that policy changes can make some previously used faces stop working; see its US troubleshooting guidance for missing or incompatible faces. Similarly, stale complications, AOD switching off independently, sensor readings, or a screen frozen across several faces may point to a separate issue. A community report of face-loading problems after an update is not evidence that those problems share the same cause as ghosting. (Samsung Community report.)

For watch-face developers
Secondary coverage reports that setting a transition duration to zero in a face’s XML (duration="0") may avoid the artifact for some faces. This is a reported developer-side workaround, not a consumer setting or a guaranteed fix for every face. Developers should test repeated ambient-to-interactive transitions on real Wear OS 6 hardware, including cases where the display dims or suspends mid-animation, and review Watch Face Format 4 behavior before publishing an update.
