The Nokia 5.4 can still handle basic smartphone tasks, but in 2026 it is a niche used-phone buy—not an easy recommendation as a primary phone in the US. Consider one only if it is inexpensive, in good condition, has a healthy battery, and its exact model is confirmed compatible with your carrier. It is 4G-only, its original software-support window has passed, and an “unlocked” listing alone does not guarantee US network compatibility.

Specifications vary across regions and configurations. HMD’s specification page lists regional variants and cellular bands, while its product page marks the phone discontinued.
Everyday experience: clean, but not consistently quick
The Nokia 5.4’s software was one of its more appealing qualities at launch. Its Android interface is relatively close to stock, without the extensive manufacturer skin found on some phones. That does not mean it is entirely bare: Google and HMD apps are present. A rear fingerprint reader provides a physical way to unlock the phone, and a dedicated Google Assistant button may be handy if you use voice commands—or annoying if you do not.

The Snapdragon 662 is an older, modest processor, however, and responsiveness can falter as demands rise. Reviews differ on how noticeable that is: TechRadar found ordinary navigation generally acceptable but noted strain with heavy apps and multitasking; Digital Trends reported more obvious delays on its 4GB/64GB review unit, including slow app launches and inconsistent touch response. Those reports are observations from particular review units, not a guarantee that every used phone will behave identically.

- Moderate use: Social apps, photography, video calls and switching between apps are workable, but not reliably snappy.
- Heavy use: Demanding 3D games, editing, many browser tabs and long video calls while multitasking are poor fits.
The 4GB version is more likely to reload apps or feel constrained during multitasking than a 6GB version. Even the higher-memory model should not be mistaken for a modern midrange phone. Older Geekbench 5 results published by TechRadar—about 307 single-core and 1,387 multi-core on its tested configuration—are useful only as period-specific context, not as a direct comparison with today’s phones. Benchmark versions, configuration, software and battery condition all affect results.
Display: roomy, but lower-resolution than current alternatives
The 6.39-inch screen gives you plenty of space for reading and video, but its 720 × 1560 resolution is HD+, not Full HD. Text and fine details look less sharp than they do on 1080p displays common among better budget phones. It also runs at 60Hz, so scrolling lacks the extra smoothness offered by higher-refresh-rate screens.
It is a functional screen, not a standout one. Some reviews found its general color and viewing angles acceptable, but outdoor visibility depends on lighting and on the condition of the particular used unit. Check the screen in person, or use a seller’s return period to inspect it for scratches, dead pixels, uneven brightness and other damage.

Photography: use the main camera; treat the others as extras
The 48MP main camera is the Nokia 5.4’s most useful rear camera. In good daylight, it can take detailed, shareable photos. Processing is less dependable in difficult light: TechRadar noted heavy sharpening, while Tech Advisor described the main camera as serviceable and criticized the secondary cameras. Expect weaker detail and less reliable results at night or in scenes with challenging contrast.
The 5MP ultrawide is useful when fitting more of a scene into the frame, but it gives up detail and is less suited to low light than the main camera. The 2MP macro is best viewed as a basic extra, not a meaningful reason to buy the phone. The 2MP depth sensor supports portrait-style effects; it is not an additional camera with much independent photographic value.
The 16MP front camera is suitable for casual selfies and video calls, not a major selling point. Launch-era specifications list rear video recording up to 4K at 30 frames per second. That resolution does not by itself promise stable footage, reliable exposure, good audio or polished results. As with any older used phone, check that the camera app opens, focuses and records properly before your return period ends.
Battery life is a strength on a healthy unit; charging is slow
The 4,000mAh battery helped the Nokia 5.4 earn favorable endurance assessments when new; Android Central called its battery life excellent. HMD advertised up to two days, but that is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed runtime. Endurance also depends on signal strength, screen use, apps and settings.
For a used phone, battery age matters more than the original capacity figure. A 2020–2021-era device may have lost substantial capacity. Watch for sudden percentage drops, unexpected shutdowns, overnight drain, unusual heat while charging or a battery that will not reach or hold a full charge. The roughly 10W wired charging is slow by 2026 standards, so topping up can take patience. A high-wattage charger will not make the phone charge faster than its own limits allow.
Software: clean Android is not the same as current support
The Nokia 5.4 launched with Android 10 and Android One branding. HMD’s launch-era materials promised two years of operating-system updates and three years of monthly security updates. That original support window has passed; the phone is discontinued, and buyers should not assume it is still receiving regular security updates.

Do not take a seller’s generic claim about the installed Android version—or a promise that a particular update is available—as proof. Check the individual device after receiving it: open Settings → About phone → Android version, then Settings → System → System update. The security-patch date is usually on the Android-version or software-information screen, though labels vary by software version. Do not assume the phone runs Android 12 without checking.
A phone can still make calls and run apps while having an old security patch. That is a meaningful trade-off for anyone who relies on a phone for sensitive financial or work activity. Treat the Nokia 5.4 as a device with limited remaining software longevity, not as a current Android One deal.

US carrier compatibility: verify the exact model before paying
For US buyers, the model number can matter more than the “unlocked” label. The US/open-market model is commonly identified as TA-1333. HMD lists different bands for regional variants, so an imported Nokia 5.4 should not automatically be assumed to work in the US. A SIM-unlocked phone may still lack useful bands, carrier provisioning, VoLTE support or an approved firmware configuration.
AT&T’s device list includes the Nokia 5.4 TA-1333. That supports compatibility for the listed variant, not a blanket promise for every Nokia 5.4 or every carrier. The available evidence does not establish universal compatibility across AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Check the exact handset with your carrier before purchase, especially if the listing describes an imported or dual-SIM version.
- Ask the seller for a photo of Settings → About phone → Model and verify the exact model with your carrier’s BYOD checker.
- Confirm the IMEI is clean and not reported lost or stolen, and confirm the phone is unlocked.
- Ask specifically about VoLTE/HD Voice and Wi-Fi calling support on your carrier; do not infer these from SIM-unlocked status.
- Buy with a return window. Once the phone arrives, test calls, texts, LTE data, Wi-Fi calling, GPS and the features you depend on. Make an emergency call only through the appropriate local emergency process if you need to verify emergency calling; do not place a test call to emergency services.
Buying one used: what to check
HMD lists the Nokia 5.4 as discontinued, so new retail availability is no longer the normal buying route. Used and refurbished listings vary by model, storage, condition, seller and shipping. Marketplace examples have appeared around $76.99–$119, but those are individual listing prices, not a stable market value or a price guarantee. Compare the total after shipping and tax with the cost of a newer supported phone.
- Model and network: Confirm TA-1333 or another variant explicitly approved for your carrier. Ask for the IMEI status and check compatibility yourself.
- Battery and charging: Look for unexpected shutdowns, rapid drain, heat, a loose USB-C port or failure to hold charge.
- Condition: Inspect the display for cracks, scratches and dead pixels; check camera focus, buttons, speakers, microphone and fingerprint reader.
- Storage: Confirm whether it is 64GB or 128GB. Android and installed apps reduce the usable space. A microSD card adds room for files and media, not processor speed.
- Seller protection: Check the return period, condition grading and what warranty, if any, applies. “Refurbished” is not a substitute for reading the listing details.
- Price: Include taxes, shipping and any likely repair cost. If the total approaches a newer entry-level phone with current support, the newer phone is usually the safer primary-device choice.
Who should buy the Nokia 5.4?
It may suit a price-conscious buyer seeking a temporary or backup phone for basic use, who values expandable storage and a relatively clean interface, can verify carrier support and is comfortable with outdated software. A low price, good condition and a return policy are essential. Battery life can be appealing if the battery remains healthy, but it should not be confused with fast performance.
Skip it if you need 5G, long-term security updates, dependable performance for demanding games or multitasking, or a camera that is a primary reason for buying. It is also a poor choice if you cannot establish compatibility with your carrier, are considering an imported unit with vague band information, or would pay close to the cost of a newer supported phone.
Compared with a newer entry-level Android phone, the Nokia 5.4’s main case is a low used price and its simple software feel; a newer model is generally the stronger choice for support life and current network needs. An older used flagship might offer better speed or cameras, but brings its own battery, repair and software-support risks. The right comparison is the total cost and condition of the individual devices, not the Nokia’s original launch price.
