Most Nothing Phone (2) problems come from an app, setting, accessory, network condition, temperature, or temporary software process—not a confirmed hardware defect. Work through the least-destructive checks first: reproduce the symptom, restart, update, isolate accessories and apps, and back up before clearing data or resetting the phone. Persistent failures across several apps, faults present immediately after boot, physical damage, swelling, or unexplained heat warrant Nothing support.

This guide applies to the US Nothing Phone (2). Nothing OS and Android labels can vary by build, so use the closest equivalent menu name when yours differs.

Quick triage

Symptom First check Likely category Escalate when
Won’t charge or charges slowly Try a known-good cable and charger; cool the phone Cable, port, temperature, charger, or software The connector works only at an angle, or charging fails with several known-good accessories
Gets hot Stop demanding apps, remove the case, and move it to a cool, dry place Workload, signal, charging, environment, or battery It is hot while idle, repeatedly shuts down, swells, smells, or emits smoke
Battery drains quickly Review battery usage and test with unused radios disabled App, weak signal, radios, update optimization, or aging battery Rapid idle drain or unexpected shutdowns continue
Wi-Fi will not turn on Toggle Wi-Fi, Airplane Mode, then restart Network or phone software The toggle fails on every network after backup and reset troubleshooting
Cellular signal drops Remove a metal case, change location, and test the SIM Coverage, carrier, SIM, bands, or phone Multiple SIMs and locations show persistent failure
Freezes or restarts Restart, update, free storage, and test Safe Mode App, system, storage, or hardware Boot loops, crashes before apps load, or failures affect many apps
Notifications arrive late Check app notification channels, Do Not Disturb, and battery restrictions Permission, background limits, app, or account All apps remain affected after settings and update checks
Camera or speaker fails Test the stock app, clean openings, and remove obstructions Accessory, app, software, or hardware The component fails across apps immediately after boot
Update fails Use Wi-Fi, charge the phone, free storage, and retry Network, storage, staged rollout, or system Repeated OTA failures or an interrupted installation leaves the phone unusable

Before troubleshooting

  • Write down the exact symptom, affected app or feature, frequency, battery percentage, recent update or installation, and Wi-Fi or cellular conditions.
  • Save screenshots or screen recordings when possible. Note whether a restart, Safe Mode, another network, or another accessory changes the result.
  • Back up important photos, videos, contacts, messages, authenticator codes, recovery codes, and chat histories before clearing storage, resetting networks, or erasing the phone.
  • Remove the case, screen protector, VPN, custom launcher, overlays, and recently installed accessories while testing.

Freezes, lag, crashes, and random restarts

  1. Restart the phone.
  2. Install every update offered under Settings > System > System updates, and install pending Google Play system and app updates. Nothing also documents Settings > About phone > Software info for checking software status. Use the latest update offered to your device; US rollouts can be staged.
  3. Close background apps and make storage space available.
  4. For one misbehaving app, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > Storage & cache and choose Clear cache. Use Clear storage only after backing up: it can sign you out or delete local data.
  5. For games, temporarily disable Battery Saver and lower resolution, graphics quality, or effects.
  6. Remove recently installed apps, launchers, VPNs, accessibility tools, and overlays. Use Safe Mode to test whether a third-party app is involved.
  7. Factory-reset only after a complete backup. Nothing’s system-problem guidance covers clearing app data, reinstalling apps, updating, and resetting for persistent crashes: official system troubleshooting.

Slower booting immediately after an upgrade can occur while Android reloads and optimizes data. Repeated reboots, boot loops, freezes before apps load, or crashes in unrelated apps point beyond a single app.

Battery drain and short battery life

  1. Open battery usage and identify unusually high-consuming apps; update or reinstall the outlier.
  2. Restrict unnecessary background activity and temporarily disable hotspot, NFC, Bluetooth, GPS, and 5G to isolate the cause.
  3. Test overnight in a stable Wi-Fi area with unused radios off.
  4. Restart after a major update and monitor while normal use resumes. Indexing, app updates, and optimization can temporarily increase consumption.
  5. Avoid intensive use while charging. Weak cellular or Wi-Fi signals, 5G, gaming, video, GPS, NFC, Bluetooth, and background processes can increase heat and power use, as Nothing explains in its Phone (2) heat guidance.

Seek service for rapid drain while idle, abnormal heat, swelling, odor, or unexpected shutdowns.

Heat and overheating

Often explainable warmth

Gaming, high-resolution video, fast charging, hotspot use, weak signal, many active radios, high ambient temperature, and using the phone while charging can all make it warm.

Safer response

  1. Stop demanding apps and let the display turn off.
  2. Remove a thick case while charging and move the phone to a cool, dry environment.
  3. Do not use a freezer, wet tissue, or other extreme cooling that can cause condensation.
  4. Avoid gaming or recording video while charging; use a compliant charger and cable.
  5. Restart after it cools. Nothing recommends operation between 0°C and 35°C and contacting support if unexplained heat persists.

Stop using and charging the phone for swelling, smoke, chemical odor, visible battery deformation, repeated thermal shutdowns, or charging that stops because of temperature.

Slow charging or failure to reach full charge

  1. Try a Nothing charger and cable if available, then a different known-good USB-C charger and cable.
  2. Inspect the USB-C port for lint or debris without inserting metal tools. Replace a loose or damaged cable.
  3. Avoid games, video, and camera use while charging. Charge between 15°C and 35°C.
  4. Test with the phone powered off, restart it, and reconnect the cable.
  5. Compare wall, car, computer, power-bank, and wireless charging sources. Do not assume a higher-wattage adapter exceeds the phone’s supported charging behavior.

Nothing’s full procedure is documented at slow or incomplete charging support. Charging that works only when the plug is held at an angle suggests debris, cable damage, or port wear; forcing it can worsen damage.

Wi-Fi failures and disconnections

Wi-Fi toggle will not turn on

  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet > Internet > Wi-Fi and toggle Wi-Fi.
  2. Turn Airplane Mode on briefly, then off, and restart.
  3. Test another network, restart the router, forget and reconnect, and temporarily disable VPN or Private DNS.
  4. If the toggle remains unusable, back up before considering a factory reset, then contact Nothing. See Nothing’s Wi-Fi procedure.

Connection drops

Compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks when available. If only one router fails, investigate that router; if every network fails while other devices work, suspect the phone or its software. Simultaneous Bluetooth, hotspot, and Wi-Fi problems are more significant than a single network failure.

Cellular signal, calls, SMS, and mobile data

  1. Remove a metal case and test outdoors or in a stronger-signal location.
  2. Toggle Airplane Mode and install offered system updates.
  3. Test a replacement SIM, and test whether the SIM works in another phone.
  4. Separate calls, texts, and data: one may fail because of carrier provisioning, account status, congestion, indoor coverage, roaming, or unsupported bands.

Nothing lists these steps in its unstable-signal guidance. Verify compatibility for your exact US model, carrier, and MVNO; switching from 5G to 4G can be a diagnostic test, not proof of a defective phone.

Bluetooth, Android Auto, hotspot, and tethering

  1. Restart both phone and accessory or vehicle.
  2. Forget and re-pair the device; remove obsolete pairings and test another accessory.
  3. Update the phone, accessory firmware, vehicle system, and companion app. Disable VPN or unusual DNS settings.
  4. For hotspot, use Settings > Network & Internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot. For USB tethering, connect the cable and choose USB tethering in the same menu.
  5. Allow the relevant app background activity when notifications or connections stop while the screen is off.

Hotspot use can increase heat and battery consumption. Nothing documents these paths in its How-To support section.

Late notifications and Glyph alerts

  1. Open Settings > Notifications > App settings and enable the app and its individual notification channels.
  2. Check Do Not Disturb, Bedtime, Battery Saver, background data, and notification permissions.
  3. Open the app, confirm it is signed in, and test with battery restrictions relaxed for messaging apps.
  4. Check Glyph settings and app-specific permissions. A third-party Glyph integration can fail because of the app, account, API, permissions, or an OS regression rather than a damaged Glyph module.

Nothing documents the notification path in its notification support material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Camera autofocus and third-party camera problems

Android Authority has reported user complaints involving autofocus and front-camera behavior in some third-party apps; these are reports, not proof of a universal Phone (2) defect: independent issue coverage.

  1. Clean lenses with microfiber and remove a case or protector overlapping the camera.
  2. Restart, update Nothing OS, Google Play components, and the affected app.
  3. Compare the stock Camera app with another camera app, in good light and at several distances.
  4. Clear cache at Settings > Apps > Camera > Storage & cache; check permissions for WhatsApp, Instagram, or other affected apps.
  5. Reinstall the affected app. Seek support if the stock camera also crashes, cannot focus, or shows artifacts.

Fingerprint and face unlock

  • Clean and dry the screen and finger, then restart.
  • Re-register the fingerprint in normal conditions and temporarily remove a thick, bubbling, or poorly fitted protector.
  • Keep a PIN or pattern available; biometrics can be unavailable after a restart or security event.
  • If multiple fingers fail or the sensor fails before the lock screen loads, seek support.

Display, touch, refresh rate, and screen glitches

  1. Restart and test touch in Settings and several apps.
  2. Remove the screen protector temporarily and check display, accessibility, magnification, color-correction, and scaling settings.
  3. Install updates and test Safe Mode.
  4. Record reproducible artifacts for support. Stop using the phone if physical damage causes erratic touch.

Do not change developer options as a first-line remedy; they can alter behavior without fixing a hardware fault.

Speaker, microphone, vibration, and audio balance

  1. Check volume and mute status, test several apps and a call, and disconnect Bluetooth.
  2. Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio Adjustment and center left/right balance.
  3. Restart and remove debris from openings without sharp tools. Test wired or USB-C audio if available.
  4. Seek service if one speaker or the microphone remains unusable across apps.

Reports of a nonworking bottom speaker appear in independent coverage, but a persistent failure can be hardware-related rather than a universal defect: Android Authority.

Updates and post-update behavior

  1. Use Settings > System > System updates, Wi-Fi, sufficient free storage, and a charged battery. Nothing’s update article recommends at least 50%; another troubleshooting page states 40%, so follow the threshold shown on your phone.
  2. Do not interrupt installation. If it fails, restart, confirm connectivity and storage, and retry later in case the rollout is staged.
  3. After updating, allow time for app updates, indexing, and optimization before judging battery or performance.

Check Nothing’s update instructions and its system-problem guidance; do not assume every US Phone (2) receives the same build simultaneously.

Safe Mode: isolating third-party apps

Open the power menu and long-press the on-screen Power off option if your build offers a Safe Mode prompt, then confirm and test. Restart normally to exit. Button behavior can vary by Nothing OS version. If the symptom disappears in Safe Mode, remove recent apps one at a time; Safe Mode disables some services, so it cannot prove every non-Safe-Mode fault is app-caused.

Factory reset—last resort

A reset can remove corrupted settings or app data but cannot repair a damaged port, battery, display, camera, or speaker. Back up first, including Google backup, photos, authenticator and recovery codes, WhatsApp and other local chats, and eSIM or SIM information. Ensure you know the Google account credentials needed afterward.

Use Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). The reset deletes applications, contacts, messages, and other data. Nothing’s Phone (2) support category explains the process: factory-reset support.

When to contact Nothing in the US

  • Swelling, smoke, chemical odor, liquid ingress, severe unexplained heat, or physical deformation: stop using and charging the phone.
  • Charging works only at an angle, or a known-good charger and cable do not work.
  • The display, camera, speaker, microphone, or fingerprint sensor fails across apps or immediately after boot.
  • Repeated boot loops, failed updates, multi-app crashes, or a factory reset that does not help.

Use Nothing’s US support and repair request page. Its US after-sales process states that in-warranty repair is generally free except for exclusions such as unauthorized disassembly, liquid damage, or physical damage, and lists repair work at 3–5 working days excluding logistics. Eligibility depends on purchase source, proof of purchase, region, timing, and device condition. Back up and erase personal data before sending the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Nothing Phone (2) overheat normally?

Warmth during gaming, video, fast charging, hotspot use, weak signal, or high ambient temperatures can be explainable. Heat while idle, repeated thermal shutdowns, swelling, odor, or smoke requires stopping use and seeking service.

Why is my Phone (2) charging slowly?

Test a known-good charger and cable, inspect the port without metal tools, avoid heavy use while charging, and charge between 15°C and 35°C. Charging that works only at an angle needs repair assessment.

Will a factory reset delete everything?

Yes. It removes apps, contacts, messages, and other local data. Complete backups and save account, authenticator, recovery-code, and chat information first.

Can a screen protector affect fingerprint recognition?

A thick, damaged, bubbling, or poorly aligned protector can interfere with touch or fingerprint reading. Remove it temporarily and re-register the fingerprint to test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know whether my carrier or phone is responsible for poor signal?

Test another location, SIM, and phone; separate call, text, and data failures; and verify exact model and carrier compatibility. Coverage, congestion, provisioning, and unsupported bands can mimic a phone fault.
