Verdict: The Google Pixel 8 launched in the US on October 12, 2023, at $699. In 2026 it is mainly a refurbished buy. It remains appealing for its compact 6.2-inch design, excellent computational photography, wireless charging, IP68 protection and Google’s seven-year update commitment—approximately through October 2030. Buy it only at a substantial discount to newer Pixels, and inspect battery health and warranty terms carefully.

Release date, launch price and colors
Google announced the Pixel 8 on October 4, 2023, and began US retail availability on October 12 at $699. That price applied to the 128GB model; 256GB was also offered. The standard Pixel 8 sat below the $999 Pixel 8 Pro and was the smaller phone in the 2023 flagship pair. Launch colors included Obsidian, Hazel and Rose; Google’s specifications also listed Mint.

Current US price and availability
As of the August 18, 2026 price snapshot, Google’s US Store primarily presents the Pixel 8 through its Certified Refurbished program rather than as a normal new product:
- 128GB: $459
- 256GB: $509
Google says these units are unlocked, restored with authentic Pixel parts, quality-tested to Google standards and covered by a one-year warranty. Inventory and prices change, so verify the listing at the official refurbished page.
A Best Buy search snapshot showed a refurbished unlocked 128GB Pixel 8 at $367.38. That is not equivalent to Google Certified Refurbished: check the seller, condition grade, battery disclosure, return window, warranty and included accessories before buying. Third-party prices are temporary market observations, not guaranteed prices.
What is a fair 2026 price?
- Under $350: Attractive if unlocked, fully functional and protected by a useful return policy.
- $350–$425: Reasonable for a clean 128GB unit with clear battery and warranty information.
- $425–$500: Compare closely with newer Pixel A-series phones and current promotions.
- Over $500: Hard to justify unless the phone is new-old stock or has unusually strong coverage.
- Near $699: Avoid; consider a newer Pixel instead.
Design and display
The Pixel 8 is unusually compact by flagship standards. Its 6.2-inch OLED panel has 1080 × 2400 resolution, 428 pixels per inch, a 20:9 ratio and Smooth Display refresh from 60Hz to 120Hz. Gorilla Glass Victus protects the front, and the phone supports HDR, an always-on display, At a Glance and Now Playing.

Google rates the panel at up to 1,400 nits in HDR and 2,000 nits peak brightness, with more than 1,000,000:1 contrast and 24-bit color. “Up to” describes a controlled maximum, not sustained brightness across the entire screen in ordinary use.
The body measures 5.9 × 2.8 × 0.4 inches (150.5 × 70.8 × 8.9mm) and weighs 187g (6.6oz). IP68 means tested dust and water resistance—not waterproofing. Protection can decline after drops, wear, repairs or disassembly, and Google says liquid damage is not covered by its warranty.
Performance, security and connectivity
Google’s Tensor G3 processor, 8GB LPDDR5X RAM and Titan M2 security coprocessor power the phone. Authentication includes an under-display fingerprint reader, Face Unlock, PIN, pattern, password and passkeys. Google also cites a security core, Trusty trusted execution environment and Private Compute Core.

Storage is 128GB or 256GB UFS 3.1 with no microSD slot. Choose 256GB if you record substantial 4K video, keep offline media or plan to use the phone for years.

The USB Type-C 3.2 port supports 5G connectivity. US model and carrier support for sub-6GHz and, where applicable, mmWave vary by exact model, carrier and location. Confirm the model number and bands before buying an imported or marketplace phone using Google’s compatibility information.
Camera hardware and features
Rear cameras
- Main: 50MP Octa PD wide, 1/1.31-inch sensor, 1.2μm pixels, f/1.68, 82-degree field of view, optical and electronic stabilization.
- Ultrawide: 12MP, autofocus, 1.25μm pixels, f/2.2, 125.8-degree field of view, lens correction and Macro Focus.
- Zoom: Super Res Zoom up to 8×; there is no dedicated telephoto lens.
The Pixel 8’s strength is Google’s computational photography rather than extra camera hardware. Google lists Ultra HDR, Magic Editor, Best Take, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Motion Mode, Real Tone, Face Unblur, Night Sight, Astrophotography, Portrait Mode, Portrait Light, Top Shot, Locked Folder, manual white-balance controls, dual-exposure controls, Live HDR+ and Frequent Faces.
Feature availability can depend on Android and Google Photos versions, country, language, account, cloud processing and hardware. The phone does not receive every feature created for later Tensor generations.

Video
The rear cameras record 4K at 24, 30 or 60fps and 1080p at 24, 30 or 60fps, including 10-bit HDR video. Other options include Macro Focus Video, Cinematic Blur, Cinematic Pan, Locked and Active stabilization, slow motion up to 240fps, stabilized 4K and astrophotography or Night Sight time-lapse. Rear digital zoom reaches 7×. The 10.5MP front camera records 4K at 24, 30 or 60fps. Audio tools include Audio Magic Eraser, stereo recording, speech enhancement, wind-noise reduction and audio zoom.

Battery and charging
Google lists a 4,575mAh typical capacity (4,485mAh minimum), 24-plus hours of estimated battery life and up to 72 hours with Extreme Battery Saver. Those are Google test estimates; cellular reception, brightness, refresh rate, gaming, temperature and battery age change real-world endurance.
With a compatible 30W USB-C charger using USB-PD 3.0 PPS, Google advertises up to 50% in about 30 minutes. The charger is sold separately. Qi wireless charging and Battery Share reverse wireless charging are included.
For a refurbished phone, the original capacity is less important than the current battery’s health. Ask whether the seller discloses health or replacement status and provides an exchange policy.
Software support: what seven years really means
Google promises Pixel 8 and later phones seven years of Android OS updates, security updates, Feature Drops and other software updates. The clock starts when the device first became available on the US Google Store—not when you purchase it—putting the Pixel 8’s promised window at approximately October 2030. This is a major security advantage, but it does not guarantee every future AI feature will run on Tensor G3. Features may require newer chips, more memory, newer cameras, particular regions or cloud services. Updates roll out in phases; check manually under Settings → System → Software update.
Pixel 8 versus Pixel 8 Pro
The Pixel 8 Pro is larger and heavier, has more RAM and adds a dedicated telephoto camera and broader pro-level camera controls. Choose the Pro for distant-subject photography, a larger display and maximum camera flexibility. Choose the regular Pixel 8 for a lighter, easier-to-handle phone and a lower refurbished price. Both share the Tensor G3 generation and seven-year policy.
Pixel 8 versus newer Pixel A-series phones
A newer A-series model may provide a fresh battery, newer modem and processor generation, and a longer practical life as a new purchase. The Pixel 8 counters with a more premium display experience, wireless charging, IP68 construction and flagship-class camera hardware. Google’s refurbished catalog showed the Pixel 8a from $339 and Pixel 8 Pro from $649 in the research snapshot; confirm current prices before purchasing at Google’s refurbished catalog.
Choose the A-series when the price gap is small and you prioritize a new device. Choose the Pixel 8 when its compact size and premium features are worth accepting an older battery and refurbished condition.
Who should buy the Pixel 8 in 2026?
Buy it if you want a compact Android phone, prioritize still photography and Google’s software, need wireless charging and IP68 protection, and can buy an unlocked unit well below newer Pixel pricing.
Skip it if you need the latest AI features, sustained gaming performance, the best modem efficiency, maximum battery life, a telephoto lens, a brand-new battery or a full current-generation warranty.
Used and refurbished buying checklist
- Confirm it is a US-compatible model and genuinely carrier-unlocked.
- Choose 256GB if your photo, video or offline-storage needs justify it.
- Ask for battery-health information and replacement history.
- Read the exact return period, warranty and exchange terms.
- Check IMEI status and make sure no activation or account lock remains.
- Inspect the display, camera glass, frame and USB-C port for damage.
- Test fingerprint unlock, Face Unlock, cameras, microphones, speakers, 5G, USB-C and wireless charging.
- Be cautious of listings that omit the seller, condition grade or warranty.
Bottom line
The Pixel 8 is still a good compact camera phone in 2026, but it is no longer a current flagship. It is compelling below roughly $425 with dependable warranty coverage, acceptable battery health and unlocked US compatibility. Around $500, compare newer Pixels; near the original $699 price, choose newer hardware instead. Seven years of promised updates improve its value, but they cannot restore a worn battery, add a telephoto lens or guarantee every future AI feature.
