Netflix error NW-2-5 means the device timed out while trying to connect to Netflix. Start with the error screen’s More Details → Check your network test, then restart the streaming device and modem/router. If the connection test passes but Netflix still fails, check Wi-Fi, DNS, VPN or filtering settings, and whether other devices can connect. The error points to a connection problem; it does not identify one specific cause or prove Netflix is down.
What Netflix error NW-2-5 means
Netflix describes NW-2-5 as a timeout: the streaming device took too long to reach Netflix. It usually indicates a connection issue with the device or the network it is using, rather than a subscription or password problem. A device can say it is connected to Wi-Fi while still having trouble resolving DNS, reaching the internet reliably, or accessing Netflix. Netflix’s NW-2-5 guidance does not identify a single cause.
- The device may not have working internet access, even if it is associated with Wi-Fi.
- Wi-Fi may be weak, unstable, or congested.
- The modem, router, DNS, or ISP connection may be failing.
- A VPN, proxy, custom DNS, parental-control filter, or other network security setting may interfere.
- A public or managed network may require sign-in or block streaming.
- The device’s app, network profile, or software may need attention.
Start with the quickest connection test
- On the NW-2-5 screen, select More Details → Check your network, if that option appears.
- If the test fails, reconnect the device to the internet before changing Netflix account settings. Use the device’s built-in network test or open another internet-dependent app if Netflix does not offer this test.
- If the test passes but Netflix still fails, continue with the restarts and network checks below.
- Check whether other apps work and whether Netflix works on another device using the same network. These comparisons help distinguish a device-specific problem from a wider network issue.
Device menus vary by manufacturer and software version. For a smart TV, streaming player, or Blu-ray player, use its network settings or manufacturer’s manual for steps not listed here.
Restart the streaming device
- Turn the device off and unplug it from power. A remote-control power button may only put it into standby.
- Wait at least 15 seconds, then reconnect power and turn it on.
- For a cable box, Netflix specifies waiting 3 minutes before reconnecting power.
- Try Netflix again.
Do not unplug a device while it is installing a firmware update.

Restart the modem and router
A modem connects your home to the ISP; a router shares that connection over Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Some homes use one combined unit. If you have separate equipment, restart both.
- Turn off the streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug the modem and router back in.
- Wait at least 1 minute, and longer if needed, until the internet indicators stabilize.
- Turn the streaming device back on and try Netflix.
Restarting is not the same as factory-resetting. Do not use a reset pin or erase router settings as an early troubleshooting step.
Check whether the problem is Wi-Fi
Try Ethernet if the streaming device and router have accessible ports: connect the device directly to the router, reconnect its network if necessary, and test Netflix. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, wireless coverage, interference, congestion, or Wi-Fi configuration is a more likely cause. If Ethernet also fails, the problem may be upstream, device-specific, or related to DNS or filtering.

If wiring is impractical, Netflix recommends improving the router’s placement and signal path:
- Move the router closer to the streaming device and place it on a raised surface rather than on the floor.
- Keep it away from other wireless equipment and metal appliances such as refrigerators or microwaves.
- If using a repeater, place it in the same room as the affected device, where it can still receive a usable signal from the router.
- Ask the ISP whether the router needs a firmware update or is due for replacement.
A fast result on another device does not rule out a weak or unstable connection at the TV or console. Netflix recommends Fast.com to check speed and connection to Netflix, but the result reflects the device running the test—not necessarily the affected streaming device. A good speed result also does not rule out DNS, filtering, or packet-loss problems.
Restore automatic DNS on PlayStation or Xbox
Netflix’s console instructions use automatic DNS. These paths are for the listed consoles; do not assume another TV or streaming player has the same menus.

PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5
- Open Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection.
- For Wi-Fi, choose Custom and select the Wi-Fi network. For a LAN cable, choose Custom → Operation mode.
- Set IP Address Settings → Automatic, DHCP Host Name → Don’t Specify, and DNS Settings → Automatic.
- Set Proxy Server → Don’t Use and MTU Settings → Automatic.
- Choose Test Connection, then try Netflix.
Xbox One or Xbox Series
Open Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Network settings → Advanced settings → DNS settings → Automatic, then try Netflix.

Xbox 360
Open Guide → Settings → System Settings → Network Settings, select the network, then choose Configure Network → DNS Settings → Automatic. Turn the console off and on, then try Netflix.
Do not enter a public DNS address as a universal fix. Netflix recommends automatic DNS on these consoles and suggests involving the ISP if DNS remains suspect. Custom DNS may also be set on a router, VPN, parental-control service, or filtering appliance; changing it can affect those services and local network features.

Temporarily check VPNs, proxies, and filtering
If the network uses a VPN, proxy, custom DNS, router-level content filter, ad-blocking DNS, parental controls, or security appliance, temporarily disable or restore the setting to its default for a test. Netflix identifies custom modem settings, VPN or proxy settings, and custom DNS as possible connection issues in its related network-error guidance. Re-enable protections after testing, and if the error returns, adjust settings with the service provider or network administrator rather than leaving security features off.
Use other devices and networks to isolate the cause
- Other apps also fail on the affected device: Check the device’s connection, the router, and any captive-portal sign-in before focusing on Netflix.
- Netflix fails on several devices on the same network: Investigate the modem, router, ISP, network-wide DNS or filtering, or a local outage.
- Netflix works on a phone using cellular data but not on home Wi-Fi: The home network or ISP path is implicated, though this does not pinpoint the fault.
- Netflix works on the home network from another device but not on one TV or console: Focus on that device’s network profile, DNS/proxy settings, app state, and software.
- A phone hotspot works: This points toward the home network or ISP path, but does not prove which part is at fault. Hotspot use may incur data charges and may not support sustained streaming.
NW-2-5 does not by itself establish whether Netflix is having a wider service issue. Check Netflix’s official help or service channels for current information; do not infer service status from the error code alone.

Shared networks may require browser-based sign-in, limit users, or block streaming video. Some TVs cannot display a captive-portal login page; a hotel may require the TV’s network address to be registered. Apartment or dormitory networks may restrict personal routers, while schools and workplaces may intentionally block Netflix. Ask the network owner whether streaming is supported and whether the device must be registered. Cellular, satellite, and mobile-hotspot connections can also be unstable or unsuitable for reliable streaming.

When to contact your ISP
If restarts, a wired test, and checks of device settings do not resolve the problem—particularly when multiple devices fail—ask the ISP to check for a local outage, modem/router faults, routing or DNS problems, and whether the device can reach Netflix. Netflix lists these domains for ISP checks: secure.netflix.com, appboot.netflix.com, uiboot.netflix.com, and fast.com. Most users do not need to whitelist them manually; the list is useful when speaking with the ISP or network administrator.
You can say: “Netflix on my [device and model] shows NW-2-5. It is using [Wi-Fi or Ethernet]. [Other devices/apps] do or do not work, and Netflix [does or does not] work on another network. Please check for an outage, DNS or routing problems, and whether the modem/router or network is blocking access to Netflix.” Mention any VPN, proxy, custom DNS, or filtering you use.
Should you reinstall Netflix or reset the device?
Reinstalling Netflix or clearing app data may help if the app itself is damaged, but it will not repair weak Wi-Fi, an ISP outage, or a DNS failure. Sign-out and password changes are not the first response to a connection timeout. If the network tests pass and Netflix alone continues to fail on one device, update the device software and consider the manufacturer’s app-repair steps before more disruptive measures.
A factory reset is a last resort because it can remove apps, accounts, preferences, and saved network details. Before resetting, make sure you have the Wi-Fi name and password and Netflix sign-in information. Netflix’s not-connected-to-the-internet guidance notes that resets may remove device data or settings.
