Yes, an Android phone can replace a TV remote in many cases—but there is no app that reliably controls every TV. Start with the software running the menus you use: Google TV, Roku, Fire TV, Samsung, or LG. For a smart TV or streaming device, use its official app over Wi-Fi; for an older, non-smart TV, your phone needs an infrared (IR) blaster or a compatible external IR accessory.
Choose the app for the device you actually watch
A TV’s brand does not always tell you which remote app to use. If a Roku, Fire TV Stick, Chromecast with Google TV, or other streamer supplies the menus on screen, you may need to control that device as well as the television. The streamer’s app may navigate its menus, while the TV’s own app or remote handles power, volume, and inputs.

Best official Android remote apps
For a matching TV or streamer, the official app is the best first try: it is designed for that platform and is more likely to support its own features than a third-party app. Install it from Google Play and check the current listing for compatibility, account requirements, and regional availability.

Google TV
Use the Google TV app with compatible Google TV and Android TV devices, Chromecast with Google TV, and Google TV Streamer. Google’s documented virtual remote requires Google TV mobile version 4.27.8.93 or later. The app and on-screen pairing labels can change, so follow the current prompts rather than relying on an old button name.
For TCL Google TV, TCL also documents remote controls through Google Home, including navigation, volume, and app launching. Some configurations may not support full network-based power control; see TCL’s Google Home instructions.
The Roku App (Official)
The official Roku app works with supported Roku TVs and streaming players when the phone and Roku are connected to the same wireless network. Roku lists remote control, keyboard and voice search, private listening, casting, and channel launching among its features, though availability depends on device and country. Roku says voice search is available in English in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. See the Google Play listing for features and the Roku setup page for network requirements.

Amazon Fire TV
Choose the Amazon Fire TV app for a Fire TV television, Stick, Cube, or other compatible Fire TV device. Its listing describes remote controls, keyboard input, setup, browsing, and search. Amazon requires the phone and Fire TV to share Wi-Fi for relevant setup and control functions, and an Amazon account is required for relevant features. Fire OS is Android-derived, but that does not make Fire TV interchangeable with Google TV or generic Android TV remotes. Check the Amazon Fire TV Play Store listing.
Samsung SmartThings
SmartThings is Samsung’s official Android route for controlling compatible Samsung Smart TVs and other connected devices. Open the app, select the connected TV, and use its remote interface; Samsung describes this workflow in its TV-control support page. Compatibility depends on model, year, region, and firmware. Initial registration or on-screen confirmation may be needed, and power-on depends on the TV’s network-standby capabilities. Check the SmartThings Play Store listing for current Android requirements.
LG ThinQ
LG ThinQ can provide remote-like controls, app launching, and content sharing on compatible LG Smart TVs. Some Android phones can turn on compatible TVs over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, but the TV must support the feature and have the relevant settings enabled. For webOS 6.0, LG gives this path: All Settings → Devices → External Devices → TV On With Mobile. The path is version-specific; see LG’s ThinQ setup instructions. LG says smart features may not work smoothly on televisions purchased before 2016, as explained in its smart-features guidance.

TCL and other manufacturer apps
TCL sells TVs with different operating systems, so choose by platform: Roku for a TCL Roku TV, Google TV or Google Home for a TCL Google TV, and a model-compatible TCL app where applicable. TCL’s MagiConnect/T-Cast listing describes remote, touch, mouse, app-launch, and casting features for supported devices; it may require the TV app to be installed or opened and the phone and TV to share Wi-Fi. See the TCL remote app listing. Other manufacturers may also offer their own apps, but verify the exact model and operating system rather than assuming brand-wide support.
Wi-Fi remote or infrared: how to tell what will work
Wi-Fi control for smart TVs and streaming devices
Most remote apps connect to a smart TV or streamer over the local network. Both devices usually need to be on the same Wi-Fi network, and discovery can fail if the router separates devices. Some TVs also need a mobile-control or network-standby setting enabled. When supported, an app may offer phone-keyboard entry, voice search, touch navigation, casting, or private listening—features that a basic infrared remote cannot provide.
Infrared for older TVs
An app cannot create an IR blaster. To control a non-smart TV with an Android phone, the phone must have built-in infrared hardware or use a compatible external IR accessory. IR usually needs a clear line of sight and can handle basic commands such as power, volume, input, and channels. It does not necessarily provide smart-TV menus or streaming-device controls. Most modern Android phones do not include an IR blaster, so check the phone’s specifications before installing an IR remote app.

Set up a Wi-Fi remote
- Identify the platform. Check the TV’s settings or home screen to determine whether its interface is Google TV, Roku, Fire TV, Samsung, LG, or another system. If you normally use a streaming stick, identify that device too.
- Install the matching official app. Use Google Play and confirm the app is from the relevant platform owner or TV manufacturer.
- Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi. Avoid guest networks, which often prevent devices from finding one another.
- Turn on the TV or streamer. If needed, enable its mobile-control or network-control setting using the physical remote or TV buttons.
- Open the app and allow nearby-device access. Choose the detected TV or streamer and follow the pairing prompt. Some platforms show a code on the TV for you to enter on the phone.
- Test controls separately. Try navigation first, then check volume, power, input, keyboard, or voice search. Some commands control the streamer; others must be handled by the TV.

Try these checks in order; stop when the app discovers the device.

- Check that the phone and TV or streamer are on the same Wi-Fi network, not separate guest or isolated networks.
- Temporarily turn off a VPN and reopen the remote app.
- Check the TV’s mobile-control or network-discovery setting, if its manufacturer requires one.
- Close and reopen the app, then restart the TV or streamer.
- If discovery still fails, restart the router and check for an AP isolation or client isolation setting that blocks devices from communicating.
- Update the app and TV firmware. Reinstall the app only after simpler checks fail.
TCL identifies same-network operation and router AP isolation as possible connection issues in its MagiConnect/T-Cast listing. Roku’s app cannot control a device that is unreachable on the phone’s wireless network, and Fire TV’s documented functions require the same Wi-Fi network. If the TV is offline and cannot be reconnected from its controls, use the original remote, the TV’s physical buttons, Ethernet where supported, or a compatible IR solution.

If it connects but power or other buttons fail
Basic navigation working does not mean every remote function is supported. The app may control the streamer rather than the TV, the TV may lack network wake, or the relevant mobile power setting may be off. Volume and input can also belong to a different device in a TV-and-streamer setup. Test each function independently and check the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
Power is particularly model-dependent: TCL warns that some Google TV configurations may not support full network power control, while LG requires specific settings for mobile power-on on compatible TVs. See TCL’s guidance and LG’s instructions.
Should you try a third-party universal remote app?
Consider one when you have mixed brands or no suitable official app, but treat compatibility statements as the developer’s claims, not a guarantee or independent certification. Check the exact TV model and operating system before paying; confirm whether the app uses Wi-Fi, IR, or both; and inspect its current Play Store Data safety information, permissions, ads, and in-app purchases.
- Universal TV Remote – All TVs by PrizePool Studios advertises Wi-Fi and IR support and contains ads and in-app purchases. Its claims do not establish that every TV or feature is supported.
- Universal TV Remote Control by Mind Cube Apps advertises broad Wi-Fi support and has in-app purchases; its listing says it is not affiliated with the brands it names.
- Any TV Remote Control by klebo advertises basic controls and optional Pro features, with IR support only on phones that have IR hardware.
- Remote for Roku, Fire TV & LG by 2kit consulting is listed as a free download with ads and in-app purchases; check the current listing for the supported devices and paid features.
- TV Remote Pro by 2kit consulting is a paid option. Its listing showed a $4.99 price in August 2026 and described no subscriptions; price and monetization can change by date and region.
A claim such as “supports 100+ brands” does not tell you whether a specific model’s power, input, keyboard, or voice controls will work. Avoid an app that requires a subscription for controls you need, puts intrusive ads between commands, or asks for permissions you cannot justify.
When a physical remote is the better answer
A replacement remote is often more dependable for an offline TV, initial Wi-Fi setup, power and input changes, or a household that needs simple, always-available controls. A hardware universal remote may be a better fit when you need one device to operate a TV, soundbar, cable box, and console. An external IR accessory is an option only if it is compatible with the phone and TV. If you already have a suitable smart TV or streamer, however, start with its free official app rather than paying for a universal app that may duplicate it.
