You can use some Android phones as webcams in Windows 11 without installing a separate webcam app. Start with Microsoft’s wireless Use as connected camera feature; if your phone supports Android’s USB Webcam mode, that is a useful wired alternative. If neither option is available, apps such as DroidCam or Camo can provide a workaround.
Choose the connection that fits your phone
These are two different built-in methods, not two names for the same feature. Microsoft’s connected camera links the phone to Windows wirelessly. Android’s USB Webcam mode presents a supported phone as a standard USB Video Class (UVC) camera.

For most supported setups, try Microsoft’s wireless method first. Choose USB when your phone exposes the native option or when you want to avoid sending the camera feed over Wi-Fi. USB is a practical low-latency choice, not a guarantee of a particular measured performance.

Check the requirements
- The PC runs Windows 11.
- The phone runs Android 10 or later and has Link to Windows version 1.24022.0 or later.
- The phone is linked to the PC, both devices are connected to Wi-Fi, and Link to Windows has camera permission. Microsoft’s Mobile devices guidance covers managing that connection.
Enable the camera in Windows
- On the PC, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mobile devices → Manage devices.
- If the phone is not listed, choose Add device and follow the linking instructions.
- Select the linked Android phone and turn on Use as connected camera.
- Approve any permission prompts. On the phone, open or install Link to Windows and allow camera access. If needed, open Android Settings, find Link to Windows in the app list, and check its camera permission.
Microsoft’s current setup and requirements are on its connected-camera support page. Windows labels can vary slightly by build.

Use Android’s USB Webcam mode
This method works only if the phone maker exposes the platform feature. Android’s documentation describes USB UVC webcam support from Android 14 QPR1 onward, but that baseline is not a promise that every Android 14-or-newer phone has the menu.
- Connect the unlocked phone directly to the PC with a USB cable that supports data, not just charging.
- Swipe down on the phone and tap the USB notification, often labeled Charging this device through USB.
- Under Use USB for, choose Webcam. Google documents this flow for Pixel phones in its Pixel Webcam instructions; other Android interfaces may use different labels.
- Open the Windows Camera app or your video-call app and select the phone as the camera.
Supported implementations may show a preview and camera controls, including front- or rear-camera selection. A phone call or another app that requests camera access can interrupt the stream; Google notes this behavior for Pixel devices.

Select the phone in a call or recording app
Once Windows exposes the camera, open the app’s video settings and choose the phone rather than leaving the camera on Default. For the built-in methods, it may appear under the phone’s name. With a third-party client, select its virtual-camera name—for example, DroidCam Video.
- Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Discord and OBS Studio: Open the app’s camera or video source selector and choose the phone or virtual camera.
- Google Meet or another browser call: Open the call’s camera settings and select the phone. If it does not appear, close and reopen the browser or app after enabling the camera.
- Windows Camera: Open the camera selector and switch to the phone if another camera is active.
DroidCam lists compatibility with Zoom, Teams, Discord, OBS Studio, and Windows 10/11 on its official site. Camo lists conferencing, browser, and streaming app compatibility on Camo Studio.

Choose audio separately
A phone webcam connection does not guarantee that the phone’s microphone is available to the call app. Select a headset microphone, the PC’s microphone, or a dedicated USB mic separately unless your particular webcam setup exposes phone audio. DroidCam offers optional audio capture, but its Windows guidance cautions that audio quality and latency can vary. Using a headset or computer microphone is often the simpler choice.
Use the rear camera and keep the shot steady
The rear camera is often the better choice because it may offer stronger optics than the front camera, though results depend on the phone, lens, lighting, and processing. Both Android’s USB webcam service and Microsoft’s connected-camera experience can offer camera switching on supported devices; Microsoft described front/rear switching and device-specific effects in its Windows Insider announcement.

- Use a stable phone stand or tripod, ideally with the lens near eye level.
- Frame the shot before joining, especially if using the rear camera, whose screen may face away from you.
- Clean the lens and face a light source; avoid placing a bright window behind you.
- Keep the phone powered for long sessions, but out of direct sun and away from heat buildup.
- Consider Do Not Disturb during important calls. On Pixel, a call or another app requesting the camera can pause the webcam feed.
Troubleshoot a missing camera or unreliable video
“Use as connected camera” is missing
- Confirm Windows 11, Android 10 or later, and Link to Windows 1.24022.0 or later.
- Update Link to Windows and Windows, then check that the phone appears under Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mobile devices → Manage devices.
- Confirm both devices are connected to Wi-Fi and Link to Windows has camera permission.
- Restart the phone and PC. If the option remains missing, unlink and relink the phone.

- Try a known data-capable cable, another USB port, and a direct PC connection instead of an unpowered hub.
- Unlock the phone, disconnect and reconnect it, then open the USB notification manually.
- Check the phone maker’s documentation for its USB settings. Do not assume USB debugging is required for Android’s standard UVC webcam mode.
- If the option is still absent, the maker may not expose the feature. Use the wireless method or a third-party app instead.
Google’s Pixel instructions specifically require a data-supported cable.

Windows sees the phone, but the app does not
- Close and reopen the video app after enabling the camera; check Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras if needed.
- Choose the phone or virtual camera explicitly in the app’s settings. DroidCam users should choose DroidCam Video; its Windows setup instructions recommend reopening chat programs after connecting.
- Check that another app is not using the phone camera, then restart the app or PC if necessary.
The picture is black, green, frozen, or laggy
- Stop and restart the camera connection, then reopen the app. Switch between front and rear cameras if available.
- For a green DroidCam output, its vendor recommends exiting and relaunching the client; a PC restart may also be needed.
- Use USB if Wi-Fi is congested or the feed freezes; try Wi-Fi if a cable or USB port is unreliable.
- For third-party software, close demanding phone apps, check battery restrictions, and lower the resolution or frame rate if the connection struggles.
- Keep the phone cool. A long-running camera session can be less reliable if the device overheats.
When a third-party webcam app makes sense
DroidCam for compatibility and connection options
Install the Android app and Windows client, connect over Wi-Fi or USB, then select DroidCam Video in the call app or OBS. DroidCam supports Windows 10/11 and advertises OBS integration and camera controls on its product site. Its free offering is standard definition; the vendor says Pro unlocks additional options and removes HD watermarks. Check its help page for current details.
Camo for image controls and effects
Camo pairs Camo Camera on Android with Camo Studio on Windows. It is a better fit if you want image tuning, focus and framing controls, or effects rather than only a basic camera connection. The vendor’s Android app page and Studio page describe the workflow and compatible apps. Its pricing page lists free output at 720p and below and Pro output up to 4K with additional features.
A dedicated webcam may be more convenient if you need a camera that is always available, want a fixed mount and integrated microphone, or cannot risk phone calls and notifications interrupting the feed. A phone can offer a capable camera, but mounting, audio, heat, and availability matter too.
