These 21 Discord shortcuts cover navigation, search, messaging, voice chat and everyday controls in the Discord desktop app and browser. Use the Windows column on Windows; macOS equivalents are listed separately. Discord changes and expands its shortcut set, so press Ctrl + / (Windows) or ⌘ + / (macOS) to open the current in-app reference.
The list is a practical selection, not Discord’s official count of all shortcuts. Most commands require Discord or its browser tab to have focus, and some change meaning when you are typing, browsing a channel or in a voice session.

Shortcuts 1–19 appear in Discord’s current Commands, Shortcuts, and Navigation Guide. The last two are additionally documented in older Discord material, so treat them as client- or version-dependent.

Navigation shortcuts
Quick switching beats clicking through the sidebar
Ctrl/⌘ + K is the fastest way to reach a channel, server, DM or conversation when you know its name. Alt/Option + Up/Down Arrow moves through channels and DMs, while server navigation uses a different macOS direction-key arrangement.

Keep the reference panel available
Press Ctrl + / on Windows or ⌘ + / on macOS whenever you are unsure. Discord’s in-app panel is more reliable than a static list after a client update.
Search and message controls
Use the right search scope
Ctrl/⌘ + F searches the channel or conversation you are viewing. Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + F opens broader Discord search, which is useful when the message may be elsewhere.

Handle messages without the mouse
Use Shift + Up Arrow (Windows) or Option + Up Arrow (macOS) to edit your most recent message when the composer is ready. Ctrl/⌘ + Up/Down Arrow browses channel history, and Shift + Page Up can take you to the oldest unread message where supported. Esc may cancel a pending message or mark the channel read, depending on focus. Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + U opens file upload.
Voice-chat shortcuts
Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + M toggles your microphone. Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + D deafens or undeafens you; deafen silences incoming call audio and mutes your microphone as well.

Discord does not promise a built-in shortcut for disconnecting from a voice channel. Its keyboard-only guidance describes using a custom keybind or the interface instead: Discord’s keyboard navigation guide.
Popouts and everyday controls
Ctrl/⌘ + E opens the emoji picker and Ctrl/⌘ + G opens the GIF picker where available. Ctrl/⌘ + P toggles pinned messages, Ctrl/⌘ + U toggles the member list, and Ctrl/⌘ + , opens User Settings. Ctrl/⌘ + Shift + N starts the create-or-join-server flow.

Windows versus macOS
- Most Windows Ctrl combinations become ⌘ on macOS.
- Windows Alt commonly becomes macOS Option.
- Server navigation is not a simple modifier swap: Windows uses left/right arrows, while the listed macOS command uses up/down arrows.
- Discord’s guide covers its built-in shortcuts in the desktop and browser versions. Mobile Discord should not be assumed to support this system.
Because browser focus, keyboard layouts and Discord releases can affect behavior, confirm an uncertain command with the in-app reference.

Built-in shortcuts are supplied by Discord and work in the desktop app and browser. Custom keybinds are user-created mappings and require the desktop app; they are not available in Discord for the browser.

- Open User Settings.
- Select Keybinds.
- Click Add Keybind.
- Choose an action from the action menu.
- Select Record Keybind and press the desired combination.
- Enable or disable the keybind as needed.
This changes only actions Discord exposes for keybinds; it is not unrestricted remapping of every command. Discord’s explanation is available in its custom-keybind guide.
When a shortcut does nothing
- Confirm you are using Discord’s desktop app or browser version, not mobile.
- Click Discord or its browser tab to restore focus.
- Check whether the message composer, a search result, a menu or a voice session currently has focus.
- Use the macOS equivalent if you are on a Mac, including the different server-navigation arrows.
- Press Ctrl/⌘ + / and compare your client’s live list.
- Check whether another application, your browser, operating system or keyboard layout intercepted the combination.
- If the action is supported but inconvenient, create a desktop keybind.
Discord documents overlapping combinations in different contexts. For example, Ctrl + Shift + M is used for microphone control and appears in Windows text-formatting guidance, while Ctrl/⌘ + U can refer to the member list or underline formatting. Treat focus and context as part of the shortcut.
Keyboard-only navigation and accessibility
Shortcuts are only part of mouse-free Discord use. Discord’s Keyboard Navigation FAQ describes Tab for moving through interactive elements, Enter or Space to activate a selection, arrow keys for messages and menus, and F6 for moving between major desktop-app areas.
