When a Mac screenshot “doesn’t work,” the failure may be the shortcut, capture mode, save location, Clipboard, or one protected app—not macOS screenshot capture itself. Start with the built-in Screenshot toolbar: press Shift–Command–5, choose Capture Entire Screen, set Options > Save to > Desktop, and click Capture. If a PNG appears, the capture system works and you can troubleshoot the specific shortcut or destination.
1. Identify which part is failing

2. Run the reliable Screenshot-toolbar test
- Press Shift–Command–5.
- Choose Capture Entire Screen.
- Open Options and select Save to > Desktop.
- Click Capture, wait briefly, then check the Desktop in Finder.
The toolbar supports full-screen, window, selected-area, and recording modes. Its Options menu controls the destination, timer, pointer, microphone for recordings, and floating thumbnail (Apple’s Screenshot guide). You can also open it directly from Finder > Applications > Utilities > Screenshot (Apple Support).
If this test creates a PNG, macOS capture is functioning. Focus on shortcuts, Clipboard behavior, or where the file is being saved. If it fails even with Desktop selected, continue with the restart and preference steps below.
3. Confirm the shortcuts—and the Clipboard warning

Holding Control changes the result: Control–Shift–Command–3 or 4 copies the image to the Clipboard instead of creating a file. Open Preview, Notes, or Mail and press Command–V to test. This is especially easy to trigger on compact or remapped keyboards (Apple’s shortcut documentation).

4. Re-enable or restore screenshot shortcuts
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard.
- Click Keyboard Shortcuts, then select Screenshots.
- Enable the shortcuts for saving a picture, copying a picture, and opening the Screenshot utility.
- Check that the key combinations have not been reassigned.
Test again after temporarily quitting keyboard remappers, window managers, launchers, clipboard tools, remote-access software, gaming overlays, and other screenshot utilities. They can claim the same key combinations. A Windows-layout keyboard may map the Windows key to Command; test the built-in keyboard if available. Also verify that Command and Shift work in another shortcut.
5. Find a screenshot that was saved successfully
“Nothing appeared” does not mean nothing was captured.
- Press Shift–Command–5 and inspect Options > Save to. The Desktop is the default, not a guarantee. Temporarily choose a local, writable Desktop folder rather than an external drive, network share, or cloud location.
- Look in iCloud Drive if Desktop and Documents syncing is enabled. Search Finder for recent
.pngfiles; timestamped names can be easy to miss. - A timer delays the capture. Check Options > Timer and set it to None for testing.
- The floating thumbnail is optional. Turn on Options > Show Floating Thumbnail if you want a preview. Its absence alone is not evidence of failure; turn it off if you want screenshots to save without the corner preview.
- Stage Manager, another Space, or multiple displays can make the Desktop less obvious. Use Finder to inspect the actual destination.

6. Test capture modes separately
- Take a full-screen capture with Shift–Command–3.
- Take a selected-area capture with Shift–Command–4.
- Use Shift–Command–4, press Space, and capture a Finder or System Settings window.
If full screen works but dragging fails, check the mouse or trackpad and overlays. If area capture works but window capture fails, the target may not be a standard macOS window or may block capture. Apple notes that some apps, including DVD Player, do not permit window screenshots (Apple Support).

7. When only one app or video is black
If Finder and ordinary apps capture normally but Apple TV, a streaming page, a remote session, virtual machine, or another security-sensitive app is blank, the Mac screenshot engine is probably fine. DRM and deliberate app restrictions can prevent capture. Do not try to bypass them; use the service’s permitted download, export, print, or sharing feature instead.
8. Screen-recording permissions are a separate issue
For a third-party recorder, meeting app, browser, remote-support tool, or capture utility, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. Enable the relevant app or website, then quit and reopen it if requested (Apple’s permission guide). This setting primarily affects third-party recording and capture. It is not the first fix for a native Shift–Command–3 screenshot that saved to another folder.
If an app cannot write to Desktop, Documents, iCloud Drive, or a network volume, macOS file-access protections may also be involved (Apple Platform Security).

9. Quit capture tools and restart
- Press Escape to cancel any active selection or recording.
- Quit Screenshot, Preview, QuickTime Player, and third-party capture utilities.
- Restart the Mac.
- Test Shift–Command–5 before reopening other utilities.
This is a diagnostic reset, not a confirmed cure. It is particularly sensible after a macOS upgrade, keyboard-remapping change, display change, or failed recording.

10. Advanced: reset Screenshot preferences
Only after checking the toolbar, destination, shortcuts, conflicts, and restart, you can reset the Screenshot preference domain:
defaults delete com.apple.screencaptureRestart afterward and configure the save location, timer, and thumbnail again. This community-derived workaround is not an Apple-documented universal repair; it removes customized Screenshot preferences. Do not use recursive chmod, chown, or sudo commands to “fix” screenshots.
11. Update carefully and know when to escalate
Install available Sonoma 14 or Sequoia 15 updates after backing up important data, especially if the problem began immediately after an upgrade. Apple has not documented one universal Sonoma or Sequoia screenshot failure, so do not assume an update caused every incident or that updating guarantees a fix.
Contact Apple Support if the toolbar and shortcuts both fail after a restart, Screenshot fails in ordinary Apple apps, the issue affects multiple user accounts, other system UI is malfunctioning, or macOS reports storage, disk, or permission errors. User reports of shortcut failures after upgrades (for example, Apple Community) describe incidents, not a confirmed system-wide bug.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Shift-Command-4 show a crosshair but save nothing?
Check Screenshot’s Options > Save to setting, make sure Control is not being held, disable any timer, and paste into Preview or Notes to test whether the image went to the Clipboard.
Where are Mac screenshots saved in Sonoma and Sequoia?
By default they save as PNG files on the Desktop, but Screenshot’s Options > Save to setting can change the destination.
Do native Mac screenshots require Screen Recording permission?
Usually no. That permission mainly applies to third-party apps and websites that record or capture the screen.
Why can I screenshot Finder but not a video?
Protected or DRM-controlled video can intentionally produce a black image. Use the provider’s permitted export, download, or sharing tools.
