If you are creating a new Apple Account, None may appear at the payment step in Apple’s App Store setup flow. If you already have an account, however, Apple usually does not show a None button: you remove the saved method under Payment & Shipping. Removal can be blocked by an active subscription, unpaid balance, Family Sharing purchase sharing, or country/region requirements.
Apple now uses Apple Account instead of Apple ID, although your sign-in details continue to work. Menu wording can vary by device, software version, language, and region.

Why the None option is missing
There are two different situations:
- Creating a new account: Apple documents None as a possible payment choice in certain App Store and Mac account-creation flows.
- Managing an existing account: Go to Payment & Shipping and remove the saved method. Do not expect a literal None choice there.
Apple’s documented account-creation guidance is at Apple Support. Availability depends on the creation flow, country or region, device, age requirements, and account status.
Choose None when creating a new Apple Account
iPhone or iPad
- Open the App Store.
- Tap the My Account button.
- Tap Create New Apple Account.
- Enter the requested information.
- At the payment step, select None if Apple presents it.
- Complete phone-number and email verification.
If Create New Apple Account is missing, Apple says the device should be signed out of iCloud. The App Store route is generally the best flow to test first. A web, Apple TV, smart-TV, streaming-device, or other third-party setup may display different payment requirements and does not necessarily show the same None step.

Mac
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Sign in, then Don’t Have an Account?
- Follow the account-creation prompts.
- Select None at the payment step if it is offered.
During device setup Apple may ask for billing information separately. Entering a method does not by itself mean you are charged; Apple says a charge occurs when you make a purchase.
Remove a payment method from an existing account
On an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Payment & Shipping and authenticate if asked.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the delete button beside the method, then tap Remove.
Apple also supports payment-method management through account.apple.com, the App Store on Mac, and Apple Music or Apple TV on Windows. Older iTunes for Windows may provide the controls where supported. Apple’s removal instructions are in this support article.
Removing a card does not cancel subscriptions, refund purchases, or erase an unpaid charge. Apple may refuse removal until an account obligation is cleared.

When Apple will not let you remove the method
1. An active subscription
iCloud+ and other active subscriptions can require at least one payment method. Canceling stops renewal but normally leaves the subscription active until the already-paid period ends. Try removal again after it expires. See Apple’s payment-method guidance.
2. An unpaid balance
Messages such as Billing problem with previous purchase, Verification required, or There is a billing problem with a previous purchase indicate that Apple is trying to collect an earlier charge. This can block purchases, free-app downloads, and subscription use.
To retry the existing method, open Settings > your name > Payment & Shipping > Fix Payment Information > Try Again.

You can instead add a new, valid method and let Apple charge the outstanding amount, then remove the old method if the account qualifies. Use a method you are authorized to use, with billing details matching your region.

Where available, Apple Account credit can pay an unpaid order:
- Buy and redeem an Apple Gift Card or App Store Card for the correct country or region.
- Open Settings > your name > Media & Purchases > View Account.
- Tap Purchase History.
- Open the order marked Amount You Owe.
- Choose Pay with Apple Account Credit.
Gift-card availability and redemption rules vary. Follow Apple’s unpaid-balance instructions; a gift card is not a universal way to remove a subscription or Family Sharing requirement.

3. Family Sharing purchase sharing
If you are the Family Sharing organizer and Purchase Sharing is enabled, Apple may require you to keep a payment method. Turn off purchase sharing before attempting removal, understanding that this changes how family purchases are billed.
If you are not the organizer, the organizer’s method may be charged for family purchases. Ask the organizer to update billing, or clear your own unpaid order with an authorized method or Apple Account credit. See Apple’s Family Sharing payment rules.
4. Country or region requirements
Changing regions can require spending remaining account credit, canceling subscriptions and memberships, completing pre-orders, rentals, or Season Passes, waiting for refunds, and leaving Family Sharing. The new region may also require a valid payment method. Details are listed in Apple’s region-change guidance.

If you are moving and do not want to enter a method, Apple’s documented alternative is to wait until you are physically in the new region and create a new Apple Account there. Do not change regions merely to force a None option.

“Free” describes the current download, not the account’s billing history. An unpaid earlier purchase, active subscription, or Family Sharing arrangement can still require billing information. Therefore, “free apps never need a card” is not a reliable rule.
An expired card may only need updating rather than deletion. Use Apple’s payment-method update instructions to edit it or add a replacement. Apple Pay cards in Wallet are also distinct from the payment methods used for App Store purchases and subscriptions.

If none of these fixes works
Check subscriptions, purchase history, Family Sharing status, and the selected country or region once more. Then contact Apple Support with the exact message shown. Avoid fake card details, region spoofing, unofficial “Apple ID unlock” services, or repeated account creation. Work or school Managed Apple Accounts may be controlled by an administrator rather than by the normal personal-account settings.
