For most iPhone XR owners, the iPhone 17e is the most direct replacement: it keeps you on iOS, starts with 256GB of storage, and adds current connectivity and MagSafe. It is not a major camera or screen upgrade, though. Choose the iPhone 17 for a smoother display and more camera flexibility, or consider Android if photography, battery, a larger screen, or an explicit update policy matters more than Apple ecosystem continuity. Prices below are U.S. unlocked signals available around August 16, 2026; promotions and regional configurations can differ.

What changes when you move on from an iPhone XR?
The XR arrived in October 2018 with a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina LCD, one rear wide camera, and Lightning. It has no 5G, USB-C, MagSafe, Apple Intelligence, or newer satellite and emergency features. Its original role was dependable everyday use at a lower price than Apple’s flagships, so a sensible successor does not have to be the most expensive phone. Before buying, check Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. A worn battery may be a major reason the phone feels unusable; if the XR otherwise meets your needs, compare the cost of battery service with a replacement. A new phone will usually feel like a substantial endurance improvement over a degraded 2018 battery, but no model’s real-world battery life can be inferred from a laboratory estimate alone.
Judge the screen by more than size
- Panel type: OLED and AMOLED can show deeper blacks and stronger contrast than the XR’s LCD.
- Refresh rate: 120Hz or adaptive high refresh makes scrolling and animation look smoother; a larger panel alone does not.
- Size and brightness: A big, bright screen suits video and outdoor use but can be less pocketable.
- Camera flexibility: A second ultrawide or telephoto lens adds framing options. A higher megapixel count on one camera does not automatically deliver better photos.
iPhone 17e: the closest direct replacement
The 17e is the default pick if you want to keep iOS and avoid changing how your phone fits into your day. It starts at $599 in the U.S. with 256GB, according to current buying coverage, and Apple’s specifications list an A19 chip, a 48MP single rear camera, USB-C, and MagSafe/Qi2. The transition replaces the XR’s LCD with OLED and brings 5G, current Apple silicon, magnetic charging and accessories, and Apple Intelligence capability. Availability of Apple Intelligence features depends on supported software, language, and region, and can change by release. The 17e remains a 60Hz phone with one rear camera, however. When the iPhone 17 is worth the step up
Move up to the standard iPhone 17 if display quality and camera versatility are important enough to justify its higher price. In Apple’s comparison configuration, it has a 6.1-inch-class Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion and a camera system that includes 48MP main, 12MP ultrawide, and 12MP telephoto hardware. The 17e is the value choice when iOS continuity and everyday reliability are enough. The standard 17 is the more complete upgrade for someone who plans to keep a phone for years and will use its smoother display and extra camera options. No current official U.S. retail price for the 17 was published, so compare the live unlocked price and storage tier rather than assuming a particular premium.

iPhone 17e or iPhone 16e?
Choose the 17e when their actual prices are close. It is the newer 2026 model, includes 256GB at its base tier, adds MagSafe/Qi2, and Apple describes its C1X modem as up to twice as fast as the C1 in the 16e. A refurbished or clearance 16e can make sense if it is substantially cheaper after comparing storage, warranty, return window, and battery condition. Its lower original launch price alone is not enough reason to buy it over a 17e at a modest premium. The 16e lacks MagSafe and has less remaining support runway simply because it is the older model, although Apple does not publish a fixed support end date for every iPhone.
Best Android options for an XR owner
Google Pixel 10a: value and computational photography
The Pixel 10a is the strongest Android value alternative for buyers interested in photography and Google’s software. Current buying coverage positions it at $499, with a 6.3-inch display, dual rear cameras, and Google’s stated seven-year support policy. A published support commitment is useful, but it does not guarantee that the phone will feel equally fast or that every feature will remain identical throughout that period. Pick it over the 17e if you prefer Android customization, Google’s camera processing and a lower reported starting price to Apple integration. Pick the iPhone if you rely on iOS, Apple hardware, or 256GB base storage; Apple silicon performance is another advantage, though no directly comparable benchmark is established here. OnePlus 13R: battery, charging, and a smooth big screen
The OnePlus 13R suits people who want a large high-refresh display, strong gaming hardware, and fast wired charging rather than an XR-sized phone. OnePlus lists a 6.78-inch display with dynamic 1–120Hz refresh, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 12GB RAM, 256GB storage, a 6,000mAh battery, 55W charging, USB-C, and 206g weight. Capacity in milliamp-hours cannot be compared directly with Apple playback hours, and actual endurance depends on signal, screen settings, games, camera use, and background activity. OnePlus’s specification page establishes the hardware, not a fixed update commitment for the U.S. model; do not assume a particular support period. Skip it if compact handling, Apple services, or a guaranteed update duration is central to your choice.

Samsung Galaxy A56 5G: large display and stated update policy
The Galaxy A56 is a fit for people who prefer Samsung’s software and want a large, smooth AMOLED display. Samsung lists a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED panel, IP67 dust and water resistance, metal frame, Gorilla Glass Victus+, Circle to Search and six generations of OS upgrades plus six years of security updates. Android can offer a smoother or larger display, extra camera hardware, faster charging, and explicit update commitments at lower prices. But account for the routines and accessories you would leave behind before comparing spec sheets:

- Do you rely on iMessage group chats or FaceTime with family and coworkers?
- Do you own an Apple Watch? It does not pair as a full companion with Android.
- Do you use AirDrop, iCloud Photos, shared Apple subscriptions, or Mac/iPad handoffs regularly?
- Will you need to move WhatsApp history, authentication apps, eSIM service, or shared family location?
- Will existing cases, Lightning chargers, car mounts, earbuds, and other accessories still work?
- Are you comfortable relearning Android gestures, notification controls, settings, and default apps?
For someone deeply invested in Apple Watch, iMessage, and Apple-device workflows, an iPhone 17e or 17 is usually the least disruptive option. Android becomes more compelling if you do not depend on those links and already use Google services, Windows, or Android-compatible accessories. Check carrier and eSIM compatibility for the exact model before ordering.
Software support, connectivity, and ownership details
Support claims are not all the same kind of promise. Google coverage cites seven years for the Pixel 10a, and Samsung states six OS generations and six years of security updates for the A56. Apple has a long history of supporting iPhones, but generally does not promise a fixed number of iOS years for each model. No specific U.S. update commitment for the OnePlus 13R is established here. Do not turn historical expectations into a guaranteed end date.
For an XR owner, USB-C versus Lightning, 5G, wireless charging, MagSafe/Qi2, eSIM, and satellite or emergency features may matter more than benchmark scores. The 17e gives an Apple user a path into the current USB-C and MagSafe accessory ecosystem. Other Android models require model-specific checks for wireless charging, SIM support, and accessories; do not assume every feature is included. Also check whether a charger is in the box and whether existing cables or mounts fit.
Buying refurbished or taking a carrier deal
Check a refurbished iPhone before paying
A refurbished iPhone 16e is attractive only when a substantial saving comes with trustworthy condition and support from the seller. For any used iPhone 11, 12, or 13, a low sticker price can hide a degraded battery, limited storage, uncertain repair history, reduced water resistance after repair, activation lock, carrier restrictions, or lack of Apple Intelligence compatibility on some models. A used iPhone 13 may be worthwhile when meaningfully cheaper and in excellent condition, but age alone does not make it a better deal than a new 17e.
- Confirm the device is not Activation Locked and can be erased and activated.
- Check IMEI/carrier status and whether the exact device supports your carrier and eSIM needs.
- Get battery health in writing or a seller guarantee, not a vague “tested” claim.
- Verify storage, repair and parts history, warranty, and return period.
- Treat water resistance as uncertain after damage or repair; do not rely on an old IP rating.
- Compare the final price against a new 17e with the same usable storage and warranty coverage.
Read the full cost of a carrier promotion
A phone advertised as free may be financed and offset by bill credits. Compare the total device cost and account for the required plan, trade-in condition, credit duration, early-upgrade limits, and what happens to unpaid credits if you switch carriers. A monthly installment or credit is not the same as a $0 unlocked purchase.
