macOS Sequoia 15.x does not have one “maximum security” switch. A sound audit combines updates, encryption, network controls, account protection, app permissions, backups and hardware safeguards. Menu names can differ slightly by Sequoia point release, and some features vary between Apple silicon, T2-equipped Intel and older Intel Macs. Sequoia is supported on models listed by Apple at Apple’s compatibility and security-content page.
Work through the five high-priority settings first, then review app permissions and advanced controls. Record your FileVault recovery method before enabling encryption.
Do these five first
1. macOS Software Update
Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. Install supported Sequoia security updates promptly and leave automatic updates enabled unless a professional or business workflow requires staged testing. A major upgrade and a security update are different: postponing a feature upgrade does not justify skipping security fixes. Apple’s Sequoia update list, including later releases such as 15.7.7, is at Apple Support.

2. Background Security Improvements
Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements and keep Automatically Install on. These background protections are separate from ordinary feature updates. See Apple’s instructions at About background updates in macOS.

3. FileVault
In System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault, turn on full-volume encryption for nearly every portable Mac and any Mac holding sensitive data. FileVault protects data at rest if the computer is lost or stolen; it does not protect an already-unlocked session. Apple documents AES-XTS encryption and hardware-backed protections on Apple silicon and T2 Macs at Volume encryption with FileVault.
4. FileVault recovery method
Choose an Apple Account recovery option or a recovery key you can actually retrieve. Store a recovery key off the Mac and never keep its only copy inside an encrypted volume that depends on that Mac. Organizations should escrow keys through MDM and test their recovery process; Apple describes managed recovery at its FileVault security guide.
5. Application Firewall
Open System Settings > Network > Firewall (the exact placement can vary by point release) and turn it on. The firewall controls unwanted inbound connections; it is not a complete malware defense. Block all incoming connections can stop file sharing, development servers, games and remote-support tools, so use it only when you understand the impact. Apple’s firewall behavior is documented at Firewall security in macOS.
Protect a lost, stolen or unattended Mac
6. Stealth mode
In the firewall’s Options, enable stealth mode on public Wi-Fi and other untrusted networks. It reduces responses to probing and port scans, but can make discovery and troubleshooting harder. It does not replace updates or encrypted connections.
7. Lock screen password
Use System Settings > Lock Screen to require a password immediately, or after the shortest practical delay, when the display sleeps or the screen saver starts. Short delays are especially appropriate for travel, classrooms and shared offices.

8. Automatic login
At System Settings > Users & Groups > Login Options, keep automatic login off. It exposes the user session to anyone with physical access, particularly when FileVault is disabled or several people use the Mac. Managed Macs may enforce this through MDM; see Apple’s Sequoia enterprise documentation.
9. Strong local account password
In Users & Groups, use a long, unique Mac login password. Do not reuse your Apple Account password. This password protects the local account; it is not a replacement for FileVault recovery planning or multifactor authentication.

10. Apple Account two-factor authentication
Click your name in System Settings, open Sign-In & Security, and enable two-factor authentication. Check trusted phone numbers and devices because the Apple Account can control iCloud, Find My, passwords and recovery options. Two-factor authentication protects account access, not every local file or unlocked session.
11. Find My Mac and Activation Lock
Go to Apple Account > iCloud > See All > Find My Mac. Confirm the Mac appears in the Find My app or device list. Find My may locate, lock or erase a missing Mac, and Activation Lock can make it harder to reuse, subject to hardware and account requirements. It cannot guarantee recovery or deletion after theft.
12. Encrypted, tested backups
Use an encrypted Time Machine backup or another reputable backup system. FileVault is not a backup, and cloud synchronization is not necessarily versioned backup. Keep at least one copy disconnected or otherwise protected from ransomware and accidental deletion.

Control what applications can do
13. Gatekeeper and application sources
At System Settings > Privacy & Security > Security, keep App Store & Known Developers for normal use. Gatekeeper checks downloaded software for Developer ID signing and Apple’s notarization-related protections; it reduces risk but cannot guarantee an app is harmless. Do not disable Gatekeeper globally to install one program. Apple’s overview is at Apple Developer security.

Review System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files & Folders. Allow only the folders an app needs, including Desktop, Documents, Downloads, removable volumes, network volumes and iCloud Drive data where listed. Apple explains this consent model at Controlling app access to files.
15. Full Disk Access
Keep Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access short. Backup, antivirus, migration and disk-utility tools may genuinely need it, but it can expose protected data from apps such as Mail, Messages and Safari, Time Machine backups and certain administrative settings. Grant it only to the verified vendor app or helper. If a legitimate tool fails after review, restore only that specific permission and relaunch it.
16. Accessibility
In Privacy & Security > Accessibility, remove apps that no longer need to control the Mac. Window managers, automation tools, remote-control software and accessibility utilities may require it. An unexpected request is high risk; approval means capability, not trust.
17. Automation
Review Privacy & Security > Automation and approve only the required app-to-app relationship. Sequoia may show a notification directing you here instead of the older Finder modal prompt. Apple records this change in the macOS Sequoia release notes.

18. Input Monitoring
At Privacy & Security > Input Monitoring, be selective: this access can monitor keyboard or pointing-device input. Some hotkey, accessibility and keyboard utilities need it; unknown utilities, pirated software and unrelated apps should not receive it.
19. Screen & System Audio Recording
Keep Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording off unless a trusted meeting, recording, presentation, accessibility or remote-support app needs it. A video-conferencing app may request it again after an update or when switching to full-screen sharing. Apple describes the permission at Change Privacy & Security settings.
20. Camera and Microphone
Review the separate Camera and Microphone lists under Privacy & Security. Remove unneeded access and retain only trusted communication, creative, recording and accessibility apps. A camera cover helps with visual privacy but does not block microphone access.
21. Local Network and accessory approval
Under Privacy & Security > Local Network, allow only apps that need to discover printers, receivers, smart-home devices, local development services or collaborators. Sequoia added this user-facing control for third-party apps and launch agents; details are in Apple’s enterprise notes.
On Apple silicon Mac laptops, also open Privacy & Security > Security > Allow accessories to connect. Choose Ask for New Accessories or Ask Every Time when traveling; Apple lists the available choices at Change Privacy & Security settings. Accessory approval applies specifically to Apple silicon laptops and does not replace physical security.

Advanced protections and cleanup
Lockdown Mode
System Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode is for people who may be targeted by highly sophisticated spyware. It restricts websites, messages, attachments, invitations and media, and can break legitimate workflows. Apple says most people are not targeted by attacks of this nature; see Apple’s guidance.
Startup Security and System Integrity Protection
Leave Apple silicon Macs at Full Security in recoveryOS unless a trusted driver or specialist workflow requires otherwise. Keep System Integrity Protection enabled and never disable it as a routine troubleshooting shortcut. Startup differences between Apple silicon and Intel/T2 Macs are described at Apple Startup security; SIP filesystem protections are documented at Apple Developer.
Unused sharing services
Review System Settings > General > Sharing. Turn off Screen Sharing, Remote Management, File Sharing, Remote Login, Content Caching, Media Sharing, Bluetooth Sharing and Internet Sharing when unused. Confirm that a service is not needed for administration, support or file transfer before disabling it.

When a permission change breaks an app
- Identify the exact capability that stopped working: files, Full Disk Access, Accessibility, Automation, Input Monitoring, screen recording, camera, microphone or Local Network.
- Return to that Privacy & Security category and enable only the verified application or helper supplied by its developer.
- Quit and relaunch the app; restart the Mac if the vendor requires it.
- If the need is unclear, remove the permission again and contact the developer rather than granting every category.
On employer-owned Macs, MDM may enforce, hide or escrow settings such as FileVault keys, updates, login behavior and Local Network access. Ask the administrator before changing a control you cannot remove.
The Bottom Line
A practical Sequoia audit means current updates, background security improvements, FileVault with a tested recovery method, firewall protection, prompt locking, no automatic login, Find My, encrypted backups, Gatekeeper and least-privilege app permissions. Reserve Lockdown Mode, reduced startup security and aggressive blocking for a specific threat model or managed policy.
