On supported Windows 11 and Windows 10 PCs, add Hibernate to the Start menu through Control Panel’s Power Options. If the Hibernate checkbox is missing, enable hibernation with an administrator command, then return to Power Options to expose it in the menu.
Add Hibernate to the Start menu
- Press the Windows key, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select System and Security > Power Options.
- In the left pane, select Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Under Shutdown settings, select the Hibernate checkbox.
- Select Save changes.
- Open Start > Power and check that Hibernate appears.
This Control Panel route works across Windows 10 and Windows 11; the wording or Settings route may vary slightly by version. Microsoft documents the same Shutdown settings procedure for both versions in its power and sleep instructions. You can open the Power Options applet directly by pressing Windows + R, entering powercfg.cpl, and pressing Enter.
Optional Settings routes
- Windows 11: Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Additional power settings.
- Windows 10: Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings.
Both routes lead to the classic Power Options interface. If the checkbox is disabled, choose Change settings that are currently unavailable before trying to select it.
If Hibernate is missing from Shutdown settings
The hibernation feature may be turned off. Enable it from an elevated terminal, then select the separate Power Options checkbox to make Hibernate visible in the Start power menu.

- Select Run as administrator and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
powercfg /hibernate on - Close the terminal, reopen Power Options, and repeat the steps above to select Hibernate under Shutdown settings.
The shorter equivalent is powercfg /h on. Microsoft documents these commands as ways to enable hibernation; enabling the feature alone does not necessarily add the Start menu entry. The Power Options checkbox controls whether that entry is exposed. See Microsoft’s instructions for disabling and re-enabling hibernation.
Check whether your PC reports Hibernate as available
If the checkbox remains missing or you want to find out why Hibernate is unavailable, open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal as administrator and run:
powercfg /a
This command reports the sleep states available on the PC and may give a reason for an unavailable state. Interpret the result as follows:

- If Hibernate is available, check the Power Options checkbox and whether a work or school administrator is restricting power settings.
- If the output says hibernation has not been enabled, run
powercfg /hibernate onas described above. - If it points to the hibernation-file configuration, check whether the file is set to reduced rather than full.
- If the platform or firmware does not support the state, a menu setting cannot make it available.
Use powercfg /a to diagnose availability rather than expecting a particular list of sleep states. Microsoft describes the command in its powercfg command-line reference.
Check the hibernation-file type
Windows has a full hibernation-file configuration and a reduced one. The full file supports Hibernate, Hybrid Sleep, and Fast Startup. The reduced file supports Fast Startup only, so it cannot preserve an entire active user session for Hibernate. Microsoft documents default file sizes of approximately 40% of physical memory for full and 20% for reduced; these are defaults, not fixed sizes for every PC.
To set the file to full, run an administrator terminal and enter:

powercfg /h /type full
If Windows reports that the parameter is incorrect, reset the size configuration and retry:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
powercfg /h /size 0
powercfg /h /type full
Afterward, check powercfg /a and revisit the Shutdown settings checkbox. Change the file type only if the availability output or your needs call for it: a reduced file may have been chosen to preserve disk space while retaining Fast Startup. See Microsoft’s documentation on system power states and hibernation-file types and its powercfg options.
Use Hibernate once it is enabled
- Choose Start > Power > Hibernate.
- Or press Windows + X, select Shut down or sign out, then choose Hibernate.
- To invoke it from a command or shortcut, use
shutdown /h. This starts Hibernate directly but does not add an item to the Start power menu.
Save your work before testing Hibernate, especially if the PC has had wake, driver, storage, firmware, or docking problems.

Choose between Hibernate, Sleep, and Shut down
| Option | What happens | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep | Keeps the session in memory and resumes faster, but continues to use some power. | You will be away briefly or want a quick resume and can accept some power use. |
| Hibernate | Writes the active session to the hibernation file and powers the PC down more completely. It uses less power than Sleep, but generally resumes more slowly. | You will be away for a long time, the laptop will be in a bag, or the battery may run out before you return. |
| Shut down | Closes the active session for a normal shutdown; the next start does not restore that session as Hibernate does. | You want to close the session rather than resume it. |
| Restart | Closes the current session and starts Windows again. | You need a fresh operating-system session. |
Hibernate is ACPI power state S4. Sleep states vary by device; a PC may use traditional S1–S3 sleep or Modern Standby (S0 low-power idle). Microsoft explains these distinctions in its system power states documentation.
Hibernate is not the same as Fast Startup
Fast Startup uses a hibernation file for the Windows kernel after you sign out; it does not save the entire active user session in the way Hibernate does. A reduced hibernation file can therefore support Fast Startup without offering full-session Hibernate.
Why Hibernate may still be unavailable
The PC or firmware does not expose the state
Not every Windows PC offers Hibernate. Some devices, including some InstantGo systems, may not provide the option. Modern Standby replaces traditional S1–S3 sleep on systems that support it, but that fact alone does not establish that Hibernate is unavailable. Check the individual PC with powercfg /a. Microsoft discusses these platform differences in its Windows power guidance and system power states reference.

You lack permission or the PC is managed
Use an administrator account to change the setting or run the enable command. If it is a work or school PC and the option remains unavailable, ask the administrator; avoid registry edits or third-party utilities for a setting an organization may control.
The menu setting was not saved
Confirm that the Hibernate checkbox is selected under Shutdown settings and that you selected Save changes. Reopen the Power menu after saving. If Hibernate is still absent, use powercfg /a and check the hibernation-file configuration rather than repeatedly toggling the menu setting.
Resume problems involve a device or driver
If the PC fails to wake properly, Microsoft recommends disconnecting and reconnecting malfunctioning external devices or restarting after Sleep or Hibernate problems, and checking that device drivers are current. For a machine with known resume issues, save work before testing and consider disconnecting a dock or other peripherals.
Remove Hibernate later
If you need to reclaim the disk space used by the hibernation file, open a terminal as administrator and run:
powercfg /hibernate off
This disables Hibernate and removes the hibernation file. It also affects features that depend on that file, including Fast Startup and Hybrid Sleep; Microsoft warns that disabling hibernation makes Hybrid Sleep unavailable and can create data-loss risk if power is lost while Hybrid Sleep is enabled. To restore hibernation later, run powercfg /hibernate on, then select Hibernate again in Power Options.
