The 2024 MLS Cup averaged 468,000 viewers on Fox and Fox Deportes, 47% fewer than the 890,000 reported across those networks for the 2023 final. That is a sharp decline in the measured linear-TV audience—not proof that the final’s total audience fell by 47%. The match was also available through Apple’s MLS Season Pass, but Apple and MLS did not publicly report a comparable streaming audience. That missing number is central to judging whether MLS has shifted viewers online or lost reach.
What the 468,000 figure measures—and what it does not
The LA Galaxy’s 2024 championship win over the New York Red Bulls drew a combined average of 468,000 viewers on Fox and Fox Deportes, according to Sports Business Journal’s report of the Nielsen figures. Fox accounted for approximately 427,000 viewers; Fox Deportes averaged roughly 41,000. The Spanish-language audience was down about 45% from 2023.

The comparable combined Fox and Fox Deportes audience for the 2023 final was 890,000, making the 2024 linear figure 47% lower. The number is an average audience for those reported television broadcasts. It does not include a publicly disclosed count of people streaming through MLS Season Pass, and it should not be described as the final’s total viewership.
“Viewership” can mean several different things. A Nielsen average audience estimates how many people were watching at a typical moment. A streaming service might instead report unique viewers, total starts, or hours watched. Those metrics are not interchangeable: many people who watched briefly can produce a large unique-viewer total but a comparatively small average audience. Without matched definitions and platform-wide reporting, adding or comparing numbers can mislead.

Was it an all-time low?
The safest claim is that the 2024 final set a low for the reported Fox/Fox Deportes comparison. Broader historical claims need care because MLS Cup distribution has changed: past figures may include Fox alone, Spanish-language networks, different broadcaster combinations, or different territories and measurement methods.
For scale, the 2022 final was reported to have drawn about 2.16 million domestic television viewers across Fox and Univision, but that package is not directly comparable with the 2024 Fox/Fox Deportes figure. Historical tables are useful only when the networks, language, geography, and audience measure are specified. The low linear result is clear; an all-platform, all-time ranking is not established by the reported 468,000 figure.
How MLS’s Apple arrangement changed the audience path
MLS and Apple began a 10-year global partnership in 2023 covering league matches, playoffs, and Leagues Cup. Apple presented the arrangement as a dedicated streaming home with no traditional regional blackouts. Its rights announcement described the scope; MLS’s 2024 Cup plans confirmed that the final also had a Fox broadcast while being available on Apple’s service.
In 2024, MLS Season Pass was the primary home for the season. The final was available globally through the Apple TV app, while Fox offered a familiar linear route for U.S. viewers. The audiences were not published on one common, independently comparable basis. As a result, two very different explanations for the decline remain possible:
- Audience migration: some people who might previously have watched on television moved to Apple, leaving the linear rating lower while total reach held steady or grew.
- Audience erosion: some casual viewers did not seek out a dedicated streaming service, reducing the total audience as well as the television audience.
- Fragmentation: viewers were divided among Fox, Fox Deportes, Apple, international partners, and clips or delayed viewing, making a single headline number less representative.
The public data do not tell us which explanation dominated. Availability on a streaming platform does not establish that viewers found the match, watched it, or stayed with it.
Why a free stream is not the same as a broadcast channel
Apple made the 2024 final available free through its distribution, but “free” did not mean frictionless. A viewer still needed an internet connection, a compatible device, enough bandwidth, and a route to the Apple TV app or web player. Depending on the device and account setup, signing in or creating an account could also be part of the path.
By contrast, a widely carried broadcast channel can put a championship in front of people who are not already searching for MLS. A dedicated service can serve committed fans well and give the league more control over presentation, but it may be less effective at incidental discovery. That difference matters particularly for a league trying to grow beyond its existing fan base.

Apple TV’s overall share of U.S. television viewing was reported by Nielsen at less than 1% in November 2024, according to The Guardian. That figure concerns Apple TV+ overall, not MLS Season Pass, and cannot be used as an estimate of the Cup’s streaming audience. It does, however, underline why a dedicated platform’s reach cannot simply be assumed to match that of broad linear distribution.
Other factors complicate the year-over-year comparison
The 2023 and 2024 finals differed in teams, markets, players, and storylines. The 2024 matchup was the Galaxy against the Red Bulls, not Inter Miami and Lionel Messi. A change in star power or general interest can affect a championship audience independently of where it is shown.
Scheduling and competition from other sports can also influence a final’s audience. Without a detailed comparison of the time slots and competing events, it would be too strong to credit the Apple strategy alone for the decline. The 47% figure describes the change in measured linear viewers; it does not isolate its cause.
Attendance and social growth are useful—but different—signals
MLS has pointed to growth beyond television. The league said 2024 was a record-setting regular season and reported strong attendance figures, including a record average of 23,234 and more than 11 million regular-season and playoff attendees in coverage summarizing its figures. It also reported sponsorship-revenue growth and increased TikTok followers. See the league’s 2024 regular-season summary.
Those measures matter, but they answer different questions. Stadium attendance reflects demand to attend matches, not how many people across the country watched the final. Social followers and short-form engagement do not show how many viewers watched a full live match. Sponsor growth can be commercially encouraging without proving that national media reach is rising. These indicators support a broader growth story; they do not fill the gap in cross-platform audience measurement.
Why the missing streaming number matters
For a rights holder, ratings are only part of the business case. A streaming service can offer subscription acquisition and retention, viewing time, audience demographics, geographic reach, and opportunities for targeted advertising or sponsorship. MLS Commissioner Don Garber has discussed metrics such as subscriptions, time spent watching, and audience demographics, not just conventional ratings, in the league’s 2023 State of the League remarks.
But advertisers and outside analysts need evidence to evaluate those claims. A sponsor wants to know how many people saw an ad, who they were, where they were, and how long they watched. A platform-defined total without a clear definition or independent verification is difficult to compare with a Nielsen average audience. When Apple and MLS do not publish match-level streaming figures using a consistent, auditable standard, the league’s strongest counterargument to the linear decline is hard for the public to test.

The financial rationale is substantial. The Apple deal was widely reported as worth $2.5 billion over 10 years, while MLS’s prior eight-year agreements with Fox, ESPN, and Univision were reported at roughly $90 million per season on average. The Associated Press reported the deal context. Those headline figures do not, by themselves, establish profitability, audience growth, or the precise cash and revenue structure in every year. A rights fee shows the value the parties placed on the package, not how many people watched.

What would demonstrate that the strategy is working?
To judge the streaming strategy rather than just the television result, MLS and Apple would need to provide several measures with clear definitions and consistent time periods:
- Total unique reach: how many people watched at least part of the final across platforms, without double-counting viewers who used more than one service.
- Average audience: how many viewers were watching at a typical moment, measured consistently for linear and streaming.
- Watch time and completion: whether streaming viewers watched meaningful portions of the match.
- Audience composition and geography: where viewers were and, in appropriately aggregated form, who they were.
- Commercial and subscriber outcomes: whether the event brought in or retained subscribers, and what advertisers could verify about exposure.
The public record for the 2024 final gives a clear answer only for part of the linear-audience question. It does not adequately show the cross-platform unique reach, comparable average audience, or subscriber effect needed to decide whether streaming replaced television reach.
The likely solution is not simply Apple or television
MLS does not have to choose between abandoning a global streaming home and relying entirely on traditional television. A hybrid approach could preserve Apple as the comprehensive destination while using selected free or widely distributed windows to introduce the league to casual viewers. Marquee matches, playoff games, or other high-profile events could benefit from broad access; consistent third-party measurement could make results easier for sponsors and the public to assess.
Commercial viewing access is another part of distribution. Apple said in 2026 that EverPass offers its live-sports portfolio, including MLS, to commercial establishments through EverPass Core. That can help bars and other venues show matches legally, but commercial access is not the same as household reach, and its effect on audience totals would still need to be measured.
Platform details also change over time. In 2024, Apple used the MLS Season Pass name and listed separate season and monthly prices. Apple’s 2026 distribution announcement describes MLS as available with an Apple TV subscription. These later arrangements should not be retroactively treated as the 2024 offer, and they do not resolve what the 2024 Cup’s streaming audience was.
What the 2024 result means
The 2024 MLS Cup’s measured Fox and Fox Deportes audience fell sharply, and that is a genuine warning about linear reach. But the 468,000 figure is not an all-platform total, so it cannot prove a 47% collapse in the final’s audience overall. Nor does the presence of an Apple stream prove that the missing television viewers migrated there.
The central weakness exposed by the ratings is therefore both strategic and evidentiary: MLS moved much of its distribution into a streaming environment, yet the public cannot see a comparable, independently verifiable account of the audience that environment delivered. The Apple strategy may be building a valuable direct relationship with fans. To demonstrate that it is also replacing broad reach, the league needs transparent cross-platform measurement—not just a low linear number and separate signs of growth elsewhere.
