You can make an Instagram account harder to discover, but you cannot guarantee that it will be invisible. Set it to private, remove followers you do not trust, disable account suggestions and contact syncing, delete contacts already uploaded, and separate the account from other Meta profiles. These steps reduce exposure; they do not stop someone who knows your username, recognizes your profile, or sees it through mutual connections.
What hiding an Instagram account can—and cannot—do
Instagram privacy settings address different risks. A private account limits who can see private content and requires approval for new followers. Removing followers revokes access already granted. Turning off account suggestions and contact syncing reduces some ways people may be directed to your account. Changing profile details makes it less recognizable.
None of these controls makes an account nonexistent. People may still search for a known username, encounter it through mutual connections or recommendations, or recognize identifying details. Instagram’s visibility guidance treats controls such as private accounts, blocking, follower removal, and search-engine visibility as separate issues.
Make your account private
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Open the menu, then select Settings and privacy.
- Open Account privacy.
- Turn on Private account and confirm Switch to private.
Menu names or placement can vary by device and app version. Instagram’s private-account instructions cover iPhone, Android, Instagram Lite, desktop, and mobile browser; desktop instructions use Settings → Account Privacy → Private account.

With a private account, new followers need your approval to see private posts and stories. People who already follow you keep access until you remove or block them. Your account can still be searched for or suggested, and profile details such as your username or photo may identify you. A private setting also does not prevent discovery through a mutual connection, tag, shared message, or recommendation.
If the private-account option is unavailable
Check whether the account is a business profile. Instagram says business profiles cannot be private; switch to a personal account first if private mode is essential. The change may affect business features you use.
Remove followers who already have access
- Go to Profile → Followers.
- Find the person and select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
Removing someone is a quieter way to revoke access on a private account. If you need to prevent a particular account from finding or interacting with you in the ordinary way, block it instead. Instagram’s visibility controls distinguish follower removal from blocking.

Turn off account suggestions
Instagram documents the Show account suggestions on profiles control on desktop and mobile browsers. If you cannot find it in the app, use Instagram.com in a browser.
- Sign in to Instagram in a desktop or mobile browser.
- Go to your profile and select Edit profile.
- Turn off Show account suggestions on profiles.
- Select Submit.
Instagram says turning this off also means your account will not appear as a suggestion on someone else’s profile. It is one layer, not a universal recommendation opt-out: it does not prevent username searches, contact-based discovery, mutual-connection signals, or every other way people may encounter an account. Disable contact syncing and delete uploaded contacts
Contact matching can make an account easier to find when people have its phone number or email address. Meta says uploaded address-book names, phone numbers, and email addresses can be used to identify contacts on its services and suggest them on Instagram. Disabling your own uploads reduces one source of matching, but another person’s uploaded contacts may still create a connection signal. Turn off syncing in Instagram
- Go to your profile and open the menu.
- Select Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Upload contacts.
- Choose the Instagram account.
- Turn off Connect contacts and confirm Disconnect.
Also turn off Instagram’s access to contacts in your phone’s operating-system settings, and check every other device logged into the account. Instagram’s contact-syncing instructions advise disabling syncing across connected devices.

Delete contacts uploaded before syncing was turned off
Turning syncing off does not erase contacts previously uploaded. Instagram’s documented deletion process is on a computer:
- Log in to Instagram.com and go to your profile.
- Select Edit profile → More info in Accounts Center.
- Open Your information and permissions → Manage contacts.
- Choose Delete all and confirm.
Instagram says individual contacts cannot be deleted and that complete deletion may take up to 90 days. Recommendations based on those contacts may continue during that period.
Separate the account from Facebook and other Meta profiles
If you want a separate or pseudonymous identity, review what is connected in Accounts Center. Meta supports syncing names, profile photos, usernames, and avatars across accounts. A synced username can make the same username searchable across connected apps, and synced details may contribute to suggestions. You can unsync profile information; see Meta’s profile-syncing instructions.

Linking Instagram to Facebook may notify Facebook friends who use Instagram that you are using the account. Avoid linking the profiles if that connection could reveal your separate account. Also check that posts are not being cross-posted to Facebook: a post shared to another network can expose the account or its identity to a different audience. Privacy settings cannot conceal identifying details that you choose to display. For a separate account, review the profile and how you use it:
- Username: Do not reuse a handle people already associate with you.
- Name and photo: Avoid your full name and a recognizable face or image used elsewhere.
- Bio and links: Remove clues such as an employer, school, city, personal website, or linked public profile if separation matters.
- Contact details: Use an email address not publicly associated with you. Avoid attaching a phone number known to people you are trying to avoid where Instagram permits another recovery method; consider the account-recovery trade-off before changing contact details.
- Posts and activity: Avoid precise or routine location tags, distinctive personal references, and interactions that connect the account to your known circle.
- Following: Following the same small group of friends or coworkers can reveal who operates an otherwise anonymous account.
These are practical ways to reduce recognition, not Instagram guarantees. Keep your account’s profile details separate from any connected Meta profile if you have not removed or unsynced it.

If you are trying to avoid one person, block their account rather than relying on general discoverability settings. Review mutual followers, tags, mentions, public comments, and shared group chats that might expose the account or relay its posts. Do not accept a follow request simply to inspect that person’s account.

Blocking is not a guarantee against deliberate evasion: someone may use another account, learn about your activity from mutual contacts, or see material copied elsewhere. If the situation involves harassment, stalking, threats, impersonation, or intimate-image abuse, preserve relevant evidence and use Instagram’s reporting and safety tools.
Search results, deactivation, and deletion
Making an account private does not instantly erase material that was public. Search engines may have indexed public photos or videos, and screenshots, reposts, tags, mentions, or external links may continue to circulate. Instagram’s visibility guidance discusses search-engine indexing separately from account privacy. Review what remains public on Instagram and elsewhere; a change to your account settings cannot remove copies held by other people.
If continued discoverability is unacceptable, temporary deactivation or permanent deletion is a more direct choice than repeatedly changing settings. Download any content you want to keep and record recovery information before proceeding. Deactivation takes the account out of normal use while it is deactivated; deletion is the stronger choice when you no longer need the account. Neither can retrieve screenshots or copies already shared outside Instagram.

Troubleshoot when the account is still being found
- The private toggle is missing: Check whether the account is a business profile; Instagram requires switching to a personal account before making it private.
- You cannot find account suggestions: Open Instagram.com in a desktop or mobile browser and look under Edit profile.
- Recommendations continue after contact syncing is off: Confirm syncing is disabled on every connected device, then delete previously uploaded contacts. Instagram’s stated deletion window is up to 90 days.
- A person still identifies the account: Check for a known username, recognizable photo or bio, mutual followers, tags, linked Meta profiles, and public activity; block the person if needed.
- A public search result remains: Make the account private or remove the relevant content and allow time for search results to change. Existing screenshots and external copies are outside that setting’s control.
