Edge’s built-in webpage capture tool is now called Screenshot; Microsoft’s policy documentation still uses its former name, Web Capture. Personal users can open it from Edge’s menu, a webpage’s right-click menu, or Ctrl+Shift+S. Microsoft does not document a standard consumer setting that completely disables it: administrators can turn off the built-in feature with WebCaptureEnabled. That is different from hiding a button or enabling DisableScreenshots.
First, choose the control that matches your goal

What Edge Screenshot captures
Screenshot can capture a selected region or a full webpage, including content beyond the visible viewport. Microsoft also describes capture of web and PDF content, annotation or markup, copying, saving, and visual search. Which options appear can vary by device, market, and Edge version. See Microsoft’s feature description.
Save and Copy are different actions: Copy puts the capture on the clipboard, while Save follows Edge’s save/download behavior. Microsoft does not establish one universal Screenshot folder. Check Settings > Downloads if you need to find or change the save location.

How to use Screenshot in personal Edge
- Open Microsoft Edge and navigate to the webpage or PDF you want to capture.
- Select Settings and more (…) > Screenshot. If it is not there, right-click the page and select Screenshot, or try Ctrl+Shift+S. Microsoft documents this shortcut, though shortcuts and menus can vary by build. Policy reference
- Choose a full-page capture or select an area, then use any annotation tools offered in the capture overlay.
- Select Copy to put the image on the clipboard or Save to save it through Edge.
Can you disable Screenshot in Edge Settings?
Microsoft does not document a normal consumer-facing on/off switch that completely disables Edge Screenshot. If your build lets you remove a Screenshot button through toolbar customization, that changes the visible control, not necessarily access through the menu, context menu, or shortcut. Hiding the button is not a security boundary.

If you only want to avoid using the feature, you can leave it unused or remove its visible button where the current interface allows. If access must be removed for managed users, use the WebCaptureEnabled policy.
Enable or disable the built-in feature with policy
The policy is named Enable the Screenshot (previously named Web Capture) feature in Microsoft Edge; its identifier is WebCaptureEnabled. It is a mandatory Boolean policy, not per-profile, and supports dynamic refresh. Microsoft lists support for Windows and macOS with Edge 87 or later; this policy is not supported on Android or iOS. Group Policy on Windows
- Install or update Microsoft Edge administrative templates for the managed browser version.
- Open Group Policy Management or the Local Group Policy Editor, then go to Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
- Open Enable the Screenshot (previously named Web Capture) feature in Microsoft Edge. Set it to Enabled to allow Screenshot or Disabled to block the built-in feature.
- Apply or refresh policy. If the change is not reflected immediately, restart Edge.
- Open
edge://policyand check thatWebCaptureEnabledappears with the expected value and status.
Windows Registry alternative
Microsoft documents the machine policy value at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. The value is WebCaptureEnabled, type REG_DWORD; 1 enables the feature and 0 disables it. The following Command Prompt examples require an elevated prompt for a machine-wide change:

reg add "HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge" /v WebCaptureEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /freg add "HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge" /v WebCaptureEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /fBack up the registry before editing it. After a change, refresh policy or restart Edge, then verify the result at edge://policy instead of assuming the value was applied. For centrally managed devices, use the organization’s policy-management process so a higher-precedence policy does not overwrite the local setting.

macOS and mobile policy scope
Microsoft lists WebCaptureEnabled for macOS as well as Windows from Edge 87 onward; follow the organization’s macOS policy-management method and verify the applied policy in edge://policy. The policy is not supported on Android or iOS, so do not treat this setting as a mobile control.

Set DisableScreenshots only for the methods it covers
Microsoft lists DisableScreenshots support on Windows and macOS from Edge 77, and Android from Edge 146; iOS is not supported. On Windows, the documented registry location is HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge, with a REG_DWORD value named DisableScreenshots. Enabling the policy blocks the covered shortcut and extension-API methods; leaving it disabled or unconfigured permits those methods. This is not a replacement for WebCaptureEnabled.

Why Screenshot may still appear or not work
- Check the actual browser build: Open
edge://settings/helpand let Edge check for updates. A menu location or feature rollout can differ across versions. - Check policy status: Open
edge://policy, select the option to reload policies if available, and look forWebCaptureEnabled. Confirm its value and whether Edge reports an error. - Check the policy name:
DisableScreenshotsis not the policy that disables Edge’s built-in Screenshot feature; useWebCaptureEnabledfor that. - Check all entry points: Look in Settings and more, the page’s right-click menu, and try Ctrl+Shift+S. A missing toolbar button alone does not prove the capability is disabled.
- Check management and scope: On a managed device, another centrally applied policy may override a local change. Confirm the policy is in the expected machine scope and that the account has permission to change it.
- Refresh and restart: Apply a Group Policy refresh or allow the management system to sync, then restart Edge if the interface has not updated.
- Account for interface changes: Microsoft says Edge visual changes may be gradual, so a button or setting can be in a different place or unavailable in a particular build. Microsoft’s visual changes guidance
Can Edge prevent all screenshots?
No Edge policy can guarantee that no one can capture what is displayed. WebCaptureEnabled targets Edge’s built-in webpage capture; DisableScreenshots covers specified shortcut and extension-API methods; ScreenCaptureAllowed concerns website screen sharing. Operating-system screenshot tools, other software, and photographing the screen with another device are separate avenues. If the requirement is to protect sensitive information from capture, Edge policy alone is not sufficient; use broader organizational controls appropriate to the device and data.
Alternatives when Edge Screenshot is unavailable
For a legitimate capture task, use the operating system’s own screenshot feature or an organization-approved capture tool. Those tools are separate from Edge Screenshot and are not controlled by WebCaptureEnabled. If the Edge command is missing on a managed device, ask the administrator whether the feature is intentionally restricted rather than trying experimental flags or undocumented switches.
