To set up Windows Hello Face, open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Facial recognition (Windows Hello) → Set up. You need a Windows Hello-compatible camera—typically an infrared or supported biometric camera—and a Windows Hello PIN or another sign-in method for backup. A regular HD or 4K webcam is not necessarily compatible.
What you need before setup
- A Windows Hello-compatible camera. It may be built into the PC or connected externally. The exact requirement is compatibility with Windows Hello, not a particular video resolution. Microsoft explains the requirement in its Windows Hello setup guidance.
- A Windows Hello PIN or another permitted sign-in method. Windows may ask you to verify with your PIN during enrollment, and you need a fallback if Face does not recognize you. The PIN is associated with that device rather than being a reusable account password.
- A working camera and driver. For an external camera, connect it directly and check that its cable and port work. Keep the lens and any infrared sensor uncovered.
- Access to your Windows account. Sign in normally before enrolling. On a work or school PC, your organization may control which sign-in methods are available.
Windows Hello is Windows’ built-in sign-in system for face, fingerprint, PIN and other supported methods. It is not configured in the Camera app or your Microsoft account profile, and it is distinct from Windows Dynamic Lock, face filters and webcam attention features.
Check whether your PC supports facial recognition
- Open Start → Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.
- Under Ways to sign in, look for Facial recognition (Windows Hello).
- If the section is missing, unavailable or says Windows cannot find a compatible camera, check the PC maker’s specifications for the exact model. Look for “Windows Hello,” “IR camera” or “infrared camera.”
A webcam can work for video calls yet lack the infrared or biometric hardware Windows Hello needs. A shutter, privacy switch, disabled device, missing driver, Windows security setting or organization policy can also prevent availability, so the message alone does not prove the camera is defective. Windows’ sign-in options guidance notes that availability can depend on the device and configuration.

- Go to Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.
- Under Ways to sign in, expand PIN (Windows Hello).
- Select Set up and verify your account, then follow the prompts to create a PIN. If you already have a PIN but cannot use it, choose I forgot my PIN if that option is shown and complete the verification steps.
- Return to Sign-in options.
Button wording can vary slightly by Windows 11 build, account type and device configuration. If this is a managed device and the PIN option is unavailable, ask your organization’s IT administrator.

Set up Windows Hello Face
- Sign in to Windows 11, then open Start → Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.
- Expand Facial recognition (Windows Hello) and select Set up.
- Select Get Started if prompted, then enter your Windows Hello PIN or complete the requested identity check.
- Look toward the camera and follow the on-screen instructions until Windows finishes enrolling your face.
- When setup completes, close Settings.
To test it, press Windows key + L to lock the PC. At the sign-in screen, look toward the camera; if recognition does not work, sign in with your PIN and use the troubleshooting steps below. Keep a PIN or another allowed sign-in method available.
Improve recognition when Face is unreliable
Sign in with your PIN, then open Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Facial recognition (Windows Hello) → Improve recognition. Follow the scan prompts. Microsoft recommends this option when your appearance changes, you start or stop wearing glasses, or recognition is inconsistent. It adds a scan rather than requiring you to discard the existing enrollment. See Microsoft’s Windows Hello troubleshooting guidance.

- Use ordinary indoor lighting; avoid a bright window behind you or harsh light from one side.
- Clean the camera and make sure the lens or sensor is not covered by a shutter, tape or screen grime.
- Keep your face centered at the usual distance from the PC.
- If you normally wear glasses, enroll with them on. You can use Improve recognition for another scan with a different regular appearance.
- Remove items that obstruct your face and try again in the lighting where you usually unlock the PC.
Remove and redo a face enrollment
Use Improve recognition first if you want Windows to add another scan. To replace an enrollment completely, go to Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options → Facial recognition (Windows Hello) → Remove, then select Set up and enroll again. Microsoft says a fresh scan after removal retains only the latest face scan; it is different from adding a scan through Improve recognition.
Fix “We couldn’t find a camera compatible with Windows Hello Face”
Check the likely causes in order rather than assuming the camera is broken:

- Check the hardware. Open any physical shutter and disable any camera privacy switch. Confirm the exact PC or camera model advertises Windows Hello compatibility; ordinary RGB cameras do not become compatible by being 1080p or 4K.
- Restart the PC. A restart can restore a camera device that did not initialize correctly after sleep.
- Install updates from the right sources. Check Windows Update and the PC or camera maker’s firmware and camera-driver updates.
- Inspect Windows camera settings and Device Manager. Check Settings → Privacy & security → Camera, then Device Manager → Cameras or Imaging devices for a disabled device or warning. The app camera permission is not always the cause: Windows Hello can use the camera for sign-in even when ordinary app camera access is off. See Microsoft’s camera and privacy guidance.
- Reconnect an external camera. Try another suitable USB port and reconnect it, then recheck Sign-in options.
- Test ordinary camera operation. Try the Camera app. If video works but Hello still cannot find the device, the camera may lack Hello hardware or its manufacturer-specific support may not be working.
- Check security configuration or ask for help. Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS), firmware settings or organizational policy can restrict external cameras. If the device is managed, contact IT; otherwise consult the PC or camera maker.
Do not switch to a generic “USB Video Device” driver as a first fix. Microsoft warns that replacing a manufacturer camera driver with the generic UVC driver can remove features, including Windows Hello support that depends on manufacturer-specific extensions. Follow the maker’s guidance or Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting guidance before changing drivers.
Fix “Couldn’t recognize you”
- Choose PIN sign-in and unlock the PC.
- Clean the camera and check that nothing covers it.
- Improve the lighting and face the camera from your normal position.
- Run Improve recognition; include glasses or other accessories you regularly wear.
- If the enrollment seems corrupted or no longer reflects your appearance, remove it and set it up again.
Windows Hello recognition may be affected by lighting, glasses, makeup, hats, facial hair, obstruction and enhanced anti-spoofing requirements. On Surface devices, consult the model-specific Windows Hello troubleshooting guide as well.

Using an external Windows Hello camera
First verify that the exact camera model explicitly supports Windows Hello and has the required infrared or biometric capability. A product family can include models without that support. For example, Logitech’s Brio comparison distinguishes the Hello-capable Brio 4K/Ultra HD Pro from other Brio-series models; its Brio 4K product page identifies Windows Hello support. Check the exact model, Windows 11 support, port and cable compatibility, and return policy before buying. On a work or school PC, confirm that IT permits external biometric devices.

- Windows 11 version 23H2: Microsoft documents an Additional settings option named Sign in with an external camera or fingerprint reader. The setting’s availability and behavior depend on device configuration and policy.
- Windows 11 version 24H2 and newer: Compatible external devices may work with ESS. Some non-ESS external cameras may require ESS to be turned off, but this is not a universal fix and the relevant control may not be available on every PC because rollout is phased.
- Before changing ESS: Disabling it can remove existing ESS enrollments and associated credentials, including passkeys, which may need to be created again. Do not turn it off just to try an unverified webcam; check Microsoft’s instructions and your organization’s policy first.
Manufacturers sell external models that explicitly support Windows Hello, including Logitech’s Brio 4K and Dell’s UltraSharp Webcam WB7022. The existence of a compatibility claim does not guarantee operation on every PC: USB setup, drivers, ESS and management policies still matter. Dell’s U.S. WB7022 listing identifies Windows Hello support; verify current price and availability directly with the seller. A premium 4K camera makes most sense if you also need its video features. If facial sign-in is the only goal, compare the cost with a fingerprint reader or simply using a PIN.
Privacy, security and alternatives
Windows Hello uses the camera to authenticate at sign-in, with security behavior shaped by the PC’s hardware and configuration. Its PIN is device-specific, but neither Face nor the PIN removes the need for a fallback credential. Ordinary app camera permissions do not necessarily govern Hello’s sign-in access; closing a physical shutter will prevent the camera from seeing you and therefore prevent Face sign-in. Microsoft describes this exception in its camera privacy information.
Choose another method if you cannot reliably face the camera, use a face covering, work in variable lighting, prefer not to use facial biometrics, or need sign-in while the camera is covered. In the same Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options area, Windows may offer a fingerprint reader, PIN, password or security key, subject to device support and organization policy. A PIN is a practical choice when the PC lacks a compatible camera; a fingerprint reader may suit you better when the camera is often shuttered or face recognition remains inconsistent.
