There is no single amperage for every printer. A small inkjet may draw about 0.1 amp while printing on a 120-volt supply, while a laser printer can draw roughly 4.6 to 7 amps during active printing. The exact figure depends on the model, voltage and operating state. For a power strip, circuit, UPS or inverter, use the printer’s own rated input current or maximum-power specification—not just its low Sleep-mode consumption.

Calculate printer amps from watts

Use this basic relationship:

Amps = Watts ÷ Volts

It rearranges the relationship between volts, amps and watts. Volts describe the electrical supply, amps describe current, and watts describe the rate of power use. Watt-hours and kilowatt-hours measure energy over time.

The estimates below assume the stated watts are real input power and use nominal voltage. They are useful for comparison and initial planning, but they do not replace the printer’s rating label or installation instructions.

Power At 120 V At 230 V
12 W 0.10 A 0.05 A
20 W 0.17 A 0.09 A
50 W 0.42 A 0.22 A
100 W 0.83 A 0.43 A
300 W 2.50 A 1.30 A
550 W 4.58 A 2.39 A
671 W 5.59 A 2.92 A
840 W 7.00 A 3.65 A

The same wattage calls for less current at 230 V than at 120 V. Use the voltage specified for your printer’s regional version; do not assume a 220–240 V model can be plugged into a 120 V supply.

How many amps does an inkjet printer use?

Inkjet printers generally need much less power while printing than laser printers because they do not heat toner with a high-temperature fuser. That is a tendency, not a guaranteed figure for every model. An all-in-one inkjet may use more during scanning, paper feeding, startup or printhead cleaning than a basic single-function model.

For example, Epson lists about 12 W while printing, 2.4 W in Ready mode and 0.4 W in Sleep mode for the L1110. At 120 V, 12 W works out to about 0.10 A. This is a model-specific example, not a universal inkjet rating. Epson’s L1110 electrical specifications also list very low power use when off, with the figure varying by voltage.

Some compact inkjets use external adapters. An adapter label may show its output rating rather than the printer’s actual power drawn from the wall, so consult the printer’s specification or measure wall consumption if you need the actual figure.

How many amps does a laser printer use?

Laser printers can draw several amps while printing because their fuser heats up to bond toner to paper. Their power use can fall sharply once they are Ready or asleep, so a low idle figure does not tell you what supply capacity the printer needs.

Example model Printing power Approx. current at 120 V Other listed information
HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479 550 W 4.6 A 20 W Ready; 0.7 W Sleep; 0.06 W Off
HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M527 671 W 5.6 A 27.8 W Ready; 3.2 W Sleep; rated 7.5 A for 110 V models
HP Color LaserJet Enterprise 5700dn 605.3 W 5.0 A Rated 12 A at 100–127 V; 6 A at 220–240 V
HP LaserJet Managed E65150/E65160 840 W 7.0 A Rated 12 A at 100–127 V; 6 A at 220–240 V

These are examples from manufacturer specifications, not estimates for all laser printers. The calculated current from printing watts is not necessarily the rated input current. For instance, HP lists 671 W for M527 printing but separately gives a 7.5 A rating for 110 V models. A measured or reported power figure describes a particular mode or test; rated input current is a separate electrical specification for planning. Manufacturer notes may also describe figures as the highest values measured across a series at standard voltages.

See the official specifications for the HP M479, HP M527, HP 5700dn and HP E65150/E65160 for the listed model-specific figures and voltage information.

Printing, Ready, Sleep and Off are different loads

A printer’s power use changes with its operating state. “Printing” may refer to a particular test or workload; Ready, Sleep, Auto-Off and Off are distinct modes, and manufacturers may define or label them differently.

  • Printing: Active work, potentially including warm-up and fuser demand on a laser model.
  • Ready: Available to accept a job, often using more power than Sleep.
  • Sleep: Reduced power while retaining some ability to wake for a job.
  • Auto-Off or Off: Low-power states, but not necessarily zero consumption if the unit remains plugged in.

For example, the HP M479 specification lists 20 W in Ready, 0.7 W in Sleep and 0.06 W Off. HP lists 27.8 W Ready, 3.2 W Sleep and 0.1 W Auto-Off for the M527; the E65150/E65160 lists 31 W Ready, 0.7 W Sleep and less than 0.1 W Off. The labels and figures are model-specific. A printer left in Ready or Sleep may still consume power; “off” does not always mean physically disconnected.

Will a printer overload a 15-amp circuit?

A small inkjet is usually a small part of a household circuit’s load. A larger laser printer can take several amps while printing: the examples above calculate to about 4.6, 5.0, 5.6 and 7.0 A at 120 V. Whether a particular setup is suitable depends on the printer’s rated current, the circuit and all other connected equipment.

Do not add only the printer’s Sleep-mode draw when assessing a shared circuit. Consider active or rated load along with computers, monitors, heaters, shredders, copiers and other devices on that circuit. Do not treat a generic calculation as a guarantee that a printer is safe on every 15-amp circuit. Follow the model’s installation instructions and local electrical requirements; some large office devices may specify a dedicated circuit, but that should not be assumed for every printer.

For a power strip or extension cord, use a properly rated, grounded product and check its amp and watt limits. Avoid undersized or poor-quality cords, daisy-chaining strips or cords, and adding a printer to an already heavily loaded strip. Follow the printer manufacturer’s guidance.

Can a printer run on a UPS, inverter or generator?

Possibly, but size the backup supply for the printer’s active and startup demand—not its Sleep-mode wattage. Check continuous watt capacity, VA capacity, surge or peak capacity, runtime, voltage and waveform, as well as the printer’s rated input current. A UPS that can support a computer may still be overloaded by a laser printer’s fuser demand. Many ordinary UPS manufacturers discourage laser-printer loads; check both manufacturers’ compatibility guidance before connecting one.

Inkjet printers are generally easier to support on a modest UPS because their active power demand is often lower, but confirm the particular model and desired runtime. Use the same care with an inverter or generator: a running-watts figure alone may not account for brief peaks or the correct voltage and waveform. Do not promise compatibility based only on a printer’s idle consumption.

How much electricity does a printer use?

To estimate cost, calculate energy in each operating state, add it, then multiply by your electricity rate:

Cost = (Watts ÷ 1,000) × Hours Used × Electricity Rate

For mixed use, calculate daily energy as:

Daily kWh = [(active watts × active hours) + (Ready watts × Ready hours) + (Sleep watts × Sleep hours)] ÷ 1,000

For an illustration, using the HP M479 figures: printing at 550 W for 10 minutes (one-sixth of an hour) uses about 0.092 kWh; 20 W in Ready for 8 hours uses 0.160 kWh; and 0.7 W in Sleep for 15 hours uses 0.0105 kWh. That totals about 0.263 kWh per day, before other states or variation. Multiply that by your own electricity rate to estimate cost. This is an example usage pattern, not a typical or universal daily bill.

ENERGY STAR evaluates imaging products using different approaches: office laser printers and multifunction devices use Typical Electricity Consumption (TEC), while many home inkjet products use operational-mode criteria. Certification therefore does not mean every printer has one fixed wattage, and active-printing watts alone do not establish energy use over a week. See ENERGY STAR’s imaging equipment criteria when comparing efficiency.

Find your printer’s exact electrical rating

  1. Identify the exact model number, including any regional suffix.
  2. Check the rear or underside rating label for input voltage, amps, watts or VA.
  3. If the printer uses an external adapter, distinguish its output rating from wall-input consumption.
  4. Look up the exact model in the manufacturer’s official specifications or installation guide. Brother’s guidance explains the volts–amps–watts relationship and recommends checking the rating label.
  5. Confirm that the voltage matches your supply. Do not convert a 220–240 V printer to U.S. voltage by assumption: region-specific power supplies may be required, and incorrect voltage can damage the printer and affect the warranty. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the model.
  6. If you need actual consumption for a cost estimate, use a plug-in power meter rated for the printer’s voltage and current. Record Off, Sleep, Ready, a single-page print, a sustained print job and—if supported—cumulative kWh over a day or week.

A basic plug-in meter may miss brief peaks. Use it to understand consumption, not as a replacement for rated-current information when choosing a UPS, inverter, generator or circuit capacity.
