If the camera button in Microsoft Teams is greyed out, the webcam is not necessarily broken. Teams may lack permission, a privacy control may be blocking the lens, the camera may not be detected, or the meeting or your organization may prohibit video. First, test the camera in another app; that tells you whether to focus on the device or on Teams.
Quick check: On Windows, open Start > Camera. On a Mac, try FaceTime or another camera app. If the camera fails there too, check the shutter, operating-system permissions, device detection, drivers, and security controls. If it works elsewhere, focus on Teams permissions, the selected camera, browser settings, meeting restrictions, or Teams app state. Microsoft recommends using the Windows Camera app to help determine whether a camera problem is limited to Teams (Microsoft’s Windows camera troubleshooting guide).
Identify what “camera greyed out” means
Teams camera problems can look different, and the symptom helps narrow the cause:

- Button shows a lock or privacy symbol: Check a physical shutter, keyboard camera key, manufacturer privacy mode, or security software.
- Button turns on but the preview is grey, black, or frozen: The lens may be covered, privacy mode may be active, another camera app may be interfering, or the driver or video feed may be unstable.
- Camera is missing from Teams device settings: Check whether the operating system detects it, whether it is disabled, and whether access is blocked.
- It works in some meetings but not others: The specific meeting’s settings, attendee permissions, or organizer policy may be responsible.

Start with these quick checks
- Open the shutter and check the privacy key. Look for a slider near the lens, a dedicated privacy button, or a camera key on the keyboard. The key combination varies by computer model, so check the device maker’s instructions rather than trying a universal shortcut.
- Quit other camera apps. Close Zoom, Webex, Skype, FaceTime, OBS, camera utilities, virtual-camera software, and browser tabs using video. Camera sharing conflicts are not inevitable, but some devices, drivers, and applications can interfere with Teams acquiring the camera. Fully quit and reopen Teams; closing its window may leave it running in the background.
- Check the selected camera in Teams. Open Settings > Devices and choose the intended device under Camera. In a meeting, use More options (…) > Device settings. A laptop may list its built-in camera, a USB webcam, a monitor camera, and virtual cameras. If the list is empty, selection is not the fix—check device detection and permissions.
- Restart Teams and the computer. A restart can clear a temporary app or device state. It will not override a privacy shutter, missing driver, or organization policy.
Windows 11: allow camera access
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security > Camera.
- Turn on Camera access and Let apps access your camera.
- If Microsoft Teams appears in the app list, make sure its access is enabled.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your camera, which is important for desktop applications such as Teams and browsers.
- Close and reopen Teams, then check the camera preview again.
Windows may not list every desktop application individually, so the desktop-app switch matters even if you do not see Teams in the app list. Labels can vary by Windows release and Teams edition. If Camera access itself is greyed out, the control may be managed by an administrator or device policy; repeatedly toggling Teams will not remove that restriction. Use the camera test to choose the next step

A browser camera test can be useful, but it is not a substitute for testing in the native camera app: browser permission behavior is a separate layer.
Check camera controls, security software, and connections
Many laptops have a physical shutter, a function key that disables the camera, or a manufacturer utility with a privacy mode. Check the maker’s software—such as Lenovo Vantage, Dell Optimizer, HP privacy controls, or ASUS utilities—if installed. A privacy screen can make the feed appear blank even though Teams and Windows permissions are correct.
Security or endpoint-protection software can also restrict camera access. Check whether it has a camera privacy setting, and ask your IT administrator about an approved exception if this is a work device. Do not leave antivirus or endpoint protection disabled as a workaround.
For a USB webcam, connect it directly to another USB port instead of a hub or dock, then test it in the native camera app. If you use a monitor camera, dock, KVM switch, remote desktop, virtual machine, or virtual camera, confirm that the intended physical camera is connected and available to the session.
Teams on the web: allow camera access in both places
The browser version needs permission from the operating system and from the browser or Teams website. First make sure the operating system allows camera access. Then:

- Open Teams in the browser.
- Select the padlock or site-permissions control beside the address bar.
- Set Camera to Allow and confirm that the correct camera is selected.
- Refresh the Teams page and rejoin the meeting.
If the site control is not available, check the browser’s camera settings:
- Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Permissions > Camera.
- Edge: Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Camera.
- Safari: Safari > Settings > Websites > Camera; set the Teams site to Ask or Allow.
- Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Permissions > Camera > Settings; allow the Teams site.
Microsoft lists Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox among the supported browsers for Teams on the web and documents browser-specific device permissions in its web troubleshooting guide. Browser settings are relevant only if you are using Teams in a browser, not the desktop app.
Mac: allow Teams or your browser to use the camera
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security > Camera.
- Enable access for Microsoft Teams. If you use Teams in a browser, enable access for that browser too.
- Quit Teams with Command-Q, then reopen it.
Camera permission is managed per application in current macOS versions. Safari has a separate website-level control at Safari > Settings > Websites > Camera. Older macOS versions use System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Camera instead. See Apple’s camera-permission guide.
Check whether the meeting blocks your camera
If the camera works elsewhere but is unavailable in one meeting, do not assume the webcam or driver is broken. An organizer may have disabled attendee cameras, an attendee’s permission may have been removed, or a meeting template or event configuration may restrict video. Organization-level Teams policies can also affect video.
Ask yourself:
- Is the button unavailable in every meeting, or just one?
- Can other participants turn on their video?
- Does the camera work in a private test call or another meeting?
- Are you an attendee rather than an organizer or presenter?
If the problem is limited to one meeting, ask the organizer to check the meeting options and attendee camera permissions. If it happens across meetings on a managed work or school account, ask IT to review the policy assigned to your account. Microsoft’s policy reference identifies Mode for IP video and Video conferencing as controls that affect video, while meeting templates can include an Allow camera for attendees setting. Windows: check whether the camera is detected
If the camera fails outside Teams, or does not appear in Teams’ device list, check Windows detection:

- Right-click Start > Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras or the relevant imaging-device category.
- Confirm the camera is listed and enabled. If it is disabled, enable it.
- Install an available driver from Windows Update or the computer or webcam manufacturer’s official support page.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, consider rolling back to the previous driver.
- Restart Windows and test in the Camera app before testing Teams again.
A generic in-box UVC driver may resolve some webcam compatibility issues, but switching to it can remove manufacturer-specific features such as exposure controls, HDR, autofocus options, framing, or privacy controls. Treat it as a compatibility option, not an automatic upgrade. Use official manufacturer support sources; avoid third-party “driver updater” downloads. Update Teams and your operating system before trying destructive fixes; Microsoft includes updates in its Teams camera troubleshooting guidance. If permissions and device detection are correct but the desktop app still cannot use the camera, repair the app if Windows offers the option:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Teams > Advanced options > Repair.
- If Repair does not help, Reset may be available. Reset can remove local app data or require you to sign in again.
The Repair and Reset controls depend on the Windows build and how Teams was installed. Do not assume that steps or cache paths for Teams Free, work or school Teams, and legacy/classic Teams are interchangeable.

Cache cleanup is a later-stage option because Teams cache locations vary by edition, packaging, and app updates. A Microsoft staff response gives this path for the newer Teams package on Windows:

rm -r ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/TeamsThis is not a universal cache fix for current Teams on macOS. Do not run it unless you have confirmed that the installed legacy Teams version uses that location and you understand what it will remove. The source response concerns older Teams storage conventions.

Reinstall only after simpler fixes
Reinstalling Teams may repair damaged app files, but it cannot override operating-system permissions, a physical shutter, a disabled camera in Device Manager, meeting restrictions, or an organization’s policy. If you reinstall:
- Quit Teams completely.
- Sign out if practical, then uninstall the relevant Teams edition.
- Restart the device.
- Install Teams from Microsoft or your organization’s approved software portal.
- Grant camera permission when prompted and test in a preview or private call.
Use the installer and guidance for your edition—Teams Free, work or school Teams, and legacy/classic Teams can differ in packaging and local app data.
When to contact IT or the device maker
Contact your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass controls if:
- Windows Camera access is greyed out or the device is managed by your employer or school.
- The camera works in other apps but is restricted in corporate Teams.
- You use a virtual desktop, remote desktop, or virtual machine.
- Several users have the same issue, especially after a policy or Teams update.
- Video is disabled across meetings, or your account may have a restrictive meeting policy.
Include your Teams edition (desktop or web), operating system, camera model, whether the camera works in a native camera app, whether the issue affects every meeting, and any privacy or policy message. For hardware faults, driver or firmware problems, or a camera key you cannot identify, use the computer or camera manufacturer’s official support site. Do not change company registry settings or policies without authorization.

For an urgent meeting, try Teams on the web after granting both operating-system and browser permission, join from a phone or tablet, use an approved external camera, or join audio-only and tell the organizer video is unavailable. These are workarounds, not fixes for a managed policy or failed camera.
An external webcam can help distinguish a built-in camera fault from a broader Teams or permission problem, but it will not solve a blocked USB device, disabled operating-system access, meeting restriction, or endpoint-security policy. Check the connection and test the camera outside Teams before buying replacement hardware.
