The right online mathematics or physics lesson depends on what you need: flexible review, interactive practice, a live tutor, university-level materials, or a formal course with credit. No single platform does all of those jobs well. Start with the learner’s current level and syllabus, then choose a format that supplies the amount of feedback and accountability they need.

Quick guide: which kind of online lesson fits?

Your need Good place to start Keep in mind
Free foundational review and practice Khan Academy Useful for practice and review; it is not a substitute for live diagnosis or a guaranteed match to every syllabus.
Interactive STEM learning Brilliant Problem-led and self-paced, but not a degree or credit provider and not necessarily a complete exam course.
Individual help with a course or difficult topic Wyzant or another tutor marketplace Check the individual tutor’s subject, level, experience, price, and fit.
Live classes and group accountability for children Outschool Teachers set their own prices and classes vary in size, pace, and quality.
Advanced independent study MIT OpenCourseWare Course materials are not the same as enrollment, instructor support, grading, or credit.
Certificate, academic credit, or a credential A specific course from an accredited institution or a formal MOOC such as Coursera or edX Check that course’s current assessment, credential, and credit terms before enrolling.

These are starting points, not universal rankings. A student preparing for an AP, IB, GCSE, A-level, state, or university exam should check syllabus alignment and past-paper practice in addition to platform coverage.

What “online lessons” can mean

Self-paced video lessons

Videos let learners pause, replay, and review material on their own schedule. They can help explain a missed concept or build a sequence of foundations. Their weakness is feedback: watching an explanation does not show whether a learner can solve a fresh problem. Pair videos with independent work and answer checking.

Practice and mastery platforms

These emphasize repeated questions, hints, skill practice, and progress tracking. They can be useful for arithmetic, algebra, and regular short practice. Practice shows whether a learner can perform a skill, but may not explain why a method works or diagnose a misconception in depth.

Interactive lessons

Interactive courses ask learners to solve problems, manipulate diagrams, or respond to questions as they go. Brilliant describes its approach as combining explanations, hands-on problems, visual material, and feedback. That can suit learners who engage better by doing than by watching. Interactive enrichment is not automatically a replacement for formal written solutions, extensive exam practice, or a course matched to a particular curriculum. Brilliant also states that it does not grant degrees or college or transferable course credit; see its platform and accreditation information.

Live one-to-one tutoring

A tutor can ask questions, spot a learner’s specific error, adapt the pace, and work against a particular class or examination syllabus. Wyzant’s online lessons use video, screen sharing, chat, and shared-whiteboard tools. Its published price information gives an approximate average range of $35–$60 per hour, but tutors set their own rates and actual listings vary by subject, experience, demand, and other factors. Check the current listings and terms rather than treating that range as a quote.

Live small-group classes

Group classes provide a scheduled session and can help learners who want a teacher and peer interaction without one-to-one tutoring. Outschool offers live classes and tutoring for ages 3–18, including mathematics and science; teachers set prices, and class sizes, formats, and teaching styles vary. Review the specific class listing to see whether it is live or self-paced, how many learners attend, and what the teacher covers.

Open university materials and formal courses

MIT OpenCourseWare makes university course materials available for independent study. This can suit a disciplined learner who wants lectures, notes, assignments, or exams, but open materials generally do not provide enrollment, personal instructor feedback, grading, or academic credit. If you need a credential, graded assessment, or a recognized route to further study, verify those features on an individual course or institution’s page. A platform name alone does not establish that a course awards credit.

Choose by age, level, and goal

Elementary and middle school

Look for clear explanations, short practice sessions, readable visuals, immediate correction, and alignment with what the learner is doing in class. A free resource such as Khan Academy can be a starting point for practice. Check schoolwork regularly; if the same misunderstanding persists despite practice, consider a tutor or teacher who can identify the cause. Avoid advanced material simply because it appears more impressive.

High school

Check algebra, functions, graphs, geometry, and trigonometry alongside the physics topic. Exam preparation also requires practice in the relevant question style and syllabus. A general STEM app may help with intuition but still leave gaps in required written work or assessment technique.

College and university

Match the resource to the actual course. Students may need calculus or algebra-based physics, formal derivations, vectors, dimensional analysis, laboratory interpretation, and multi-step problem solving. Open university materials can support independent review, but they may be a poor fit for a student who needs feedback on weekly assignments or course-specific notation.

Adult learners

Begin with a short diagnostic and a clear goal rather than signing up immediately for calculus or university physics. A flexible platform may be enough for review; a tutor may be more efficient if you need to identify what has become rusty or work toward a specific deadline.

Build the mathematics foundation for physics

You do not need to master all advanced mathematics before beginning physics. For introductory mechanics, algebra, units, graphs, vectors, and basic trigonometry often matter sooner than calculus. More advanced university physics may require calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra.

  1. Foundations: arithmetic, fractions, ratios, percentages, negative numbers, exponents, roots, scientific notation, and unit conversion.
  2. Algebra: simplifying expressions, rearranging equations, linear equations, simultaneous equations, inequalities, factoring, quadratics, and functions.
  3. Graphs and geometry: coordinate graphs, slope, intercepts, triangles, the Pythagorean theorem, and interpreting data.
  4. Trigonometry and vectors: sine, cosine, tangent, radians, components, and direction. These are particularly useful for forces, motion, and fields.
  5. Calculus and beyond: derivatives and integrals for rates and accumulated quantities; later courses may add differential equations, matrices, eigenvalues, multivariable calculus, or other advanced tools.

Use this quick check before starting a physics unit: Can the learner rearrange an equation, convert units, use scientific notation, read a graph’s slope, resolve a simple vector, and use basic trigonometry if the topic requires it? If not, shore up the specific prerequisite rather than assuming that more physics videos will fix it.

What can be learned online?

Mathematics

Online lessons commonly cover arithmetic and fractions, ratios and rates, algebra, functions, geometry, trigonometry, graphs and data, calculus, and—at higher levels—linear algebra, differential equations, probability, and numerical methods. The right sequence depends on the learner’s goal. A course’s list of topics is not proof that it follows a specific examination board or institution’s syllabus.

Physics

Introductory courses commonly cover measurement and units, motion, Newton’s laws, forces, work and energy, momentum, circular motion, and gravitation. Further study can include rotation, oscillations, waves and sound, fluids, thermal physics, electricity and circuits, magnetism, induction, and optics. Advanced options may address relativity, quantum concepts, atomic and nuclear physics, thermodynamics, and calculus-based mechanics or electromagnetism. Check the prerequisites: a course described as “physics” could mean anything from school-level mechanics to university theory.

A strong worked physics solution does more than substitute numbers into a formula. It should identify the physical situation, show a diagram where useful, state assumptions, choose a law or model, set up the algebra, keep units, calculate, and explain whether the result makes sense. Recognizing a formula is not the same as knowing when a model applies.

How to compare resources

Option Good fit Feedback and limitations
Khan Academy Free foundations, review, and practice in mathematics and science. Useful for independent practice; learners needing live diagnosis or specialized advanced physics may need another resource. Its efficacy page summarizes studies, but outcomes from structured, sustained implementations should not be read as a guarantee for casual individual use. See Khan Academy’s efficacy overview.
Brilliant Interactive, problem-led STEM learning and conceptual enrichment. Its free tier has usage and access limits, including daily lesson limits, sequential course access, ads, and limited Koji access; Premium removes listed restrictions such as lesson limits and provides full Koji access. Features and prices can change, so check current plan details. It does not award academic degrees or credit.
Wyzant One-to-one support for a current course, exam, or hard topic. Rates and tutor suitability vary. Review experience with the exact level and syllabus, teaching approach, schedule, and current marketplace terms.
Outschool Live classes, enrichment, and group accountability for children and teenagers. Teacher-set prices and varied formats mean you must inspect class size, pace, materials, and teacher experience individually.
MIT OpenCourseWare Advanced independent learners looking for university course materials. Materials do not automatically include an instructor, marking, enrollment, or credit; learners need to supply structure and seek help if they stall.

For formal certificates or credit, compare the terms of the specific course at a university, Coursera, or edX. Audit access, certificate availability, financial aid, and credit rules can differ by course and change over time.

Evaluate a lesson before committing

  • Level and prerequisites: Are they stated clearly, and can the learner handle them?
  • Teaching: Does the lesson require solving and retrieval, or mostly watching? Does feedback explain an error?
  • Solutions: Are full steps shown, including units and assumptions in physics?
  • Curriculum fit: Does it match the country, exam board, textbook, university course, notation, calculator rules, and practical requirements?
  • Transfer: Can the learner solve an unfamiliar problem without a hint, not just repeat an example?
  • Access: Are captions, transcripts, readable diagrams, keyboard-accessible controls, and downloadable notes available where needed? Will it work with the learner’s device and internet connection?
  • Evidence: Distinguish provider-published studies from independent research. Ask whether a study was randomized or correlational, what ages and subjects it covered, and whether the studied use resembles the learner’s situation.

Khan Academy publishes research summaries and reports positive outcomes in some structured implementations. For example, its 2026 summary describes a randomized trial in India involving teacher-supervised use. That is evidence about a particular implementation, not a prediction that every learner using the platform informally at home will achieve the same result. See the 2026 summary and annual efficacy results.

A practical workflow for choosing and studying

  1. Set one outcome. For example: catch up on algebra, prepare for a particular exam, understand circuits, complete a course, or explore physics for interest.
  2. Check the starting point. Try a few problems in arithmetic, algebra, graphs, units, and the target physics topic. Use results to find the prerequisite gap.
  3. Choose the format. Use self-paced lessons for flexibility, interactive lessons for problem-led engagement, tutoring for individual diagnosis, a group class for scheduled accountability, or open courseware for advanced independent study. Combining formats is often sensible.
  4. Study actively. Attempt a problem first; review the explanation; write the principle or definition; solve several problems without looking; explain the answer in words; check units, signs, and reasonableness; record errors and retry later.
  5. Test transfer. Change the numbers or context. The learner should be able to choose a method, complete the work without hints, and explain why the result is plausible.
  6. Escalate if stuck. Add human help if the same mistake recurs, the learner cannot explain the method after repeated attempts, an exam is near, or accountability is the main barrier.

When a resource is not working

  • The learner watches but cannot solve: Pause videos and require an attempted solution before viewing the worked answer.
  • Physics errors are really algebra errors: Review rearranging equations, fractions, signs, trigonometry, graphs, or unit conversion before adding more physics content.
  • App success does not carry over to tests: Add unfamiliar, multi-step questions and past papers that match the actual syllabus.
  • Hints or AI reveal answers too quickly: Require a diagram, principle, equation before substitution, units, and interpretation. Treat AI output as a suggestion to verify, not an authority; AI can make confident errors in algebra, units, or physical assumptions.
  • A tutor does all the work: Ask the tutor to diagnose, question, and coach while the learner performs the reasoning. Try a lesson before buying a package.
  • Open materials feel overwhelming: Follow the syllabus and prerequisite order, set a weekly plan, and add a textbook or tutor if independent progress stalls.
  • Video or technology creates a barrier: Prefer transcripts, captions, downloadable notes, accessible diagrams, and low-bandwidth options. Online explanations also cannot necessarily replace supervised laboratory experience when practical skills are required.

How to decide between free and paid

Free resources are a sensible first step when the learner can study independently, needs routine review, and can find or check enough practice. Paid tutoring is more justifiable when a learner needs rapid diagnosis, persistent misconceptions addressed, a specific syllabus followed, or direct accountability. A subscription can add structured or interactive access, but does not necessarily include a human teacher, grading, curriculum alignment, or a credential. Compare the feature the learner actually needs—not just the size of a lesson library—and verify live prices and terms on the provider’s official page.

For a simple decision: start with Khan Academy for free foundations; try Brilliant for interactive STEM practice; use MIT OpenCourseWare for advanced course materials; choose a tutor for individualized help or a live class for group structure; and go to a formal course or institution when credit or a recognized credential matters.
