Verdict: The Casio WSD-F10 was an unusually rugged and distinctive Android Wear watch for 2016, with excellent physical controls, a dual-layer display and useful Casio outdoor tools. In 2026, however, its phone-dependent location, bulky case, aging battery and increasingly awkward software setup make it sensible only as an inexpensive used Casio novelty or basic notification watch—not as a dependable modern outdoor smartwatch.
What the Casio WSD-F10 was
Announced on January 6, 2016, the WSD-F10 was Casio’s first Smart Outdoor Watch. It combined Android Wear (now Wear OS by Google) with Casio styling aimed at trekking, cycling, fishing, skiing and similar activities. It launched in orange, green, black and red. Casio’s original announcement positioned it as an outdoor instrument first and a conventional smartwatch second.
That distinction still explains the watch best: it is a tough Casio watch with an early smartwatch layer, not a modern GPS sports computer.
Design, controls and durability
The WSD-F10 is large by any modern smartwatch standard: approximately 61.7 × 56.4 × 15.7 mm and 93 g including its band, according to the user guide. Smaller wrists may find it uncomfortable, and the thick case can catch on jacket cuffs.

Its best physical feature is the three-button layout. A power/app button, function button and tool button provide direct access to watch functions without repeatedly swiping a small screen. The buttons are large enough to use with gloves, a meaningful advantage outdoors.
Casio rated the watch for 50-meter (5-atmosphere) water resistance and said it was tested to MIL-STD-810G-related military-standard specifications. That means testing against specified environmental conditions, not that the watch is indestructible. “Water resistant” is the accurate term, not universally waterproof.
On a used example, inspect the display for delamination or cracks, test every button, check charging contacts for corrosion, and look for battery swelling. Seals age and can be damaged by impact, so an old unit’s original water-resistance rating is not proof that it remains safe for swimming.
Dual-layer display and battery strategy
The display combines a color LCD for apps and measurements with a monochrome LCD for low-power timekeeping. Casio’s Timepiece Mode disables smart functions and shows time information on the monochrome layer. Under Casio’s stated test conditions, the company claimed more than one month of battery life in this mode (see the launch announcement).
That claim should not be confused with normal smartwatch endurance. Notifications, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, outdoor tools, phone signal quality, temperature and battery age all affect runtime. A 2016 battery may now have substantially reduced capacity. Ask a seller for proof that the watch charges, boots, remains on after a full charge and includes the correct charger.
Outdoor tools: useful context, not modern navigation
Casio’s TOOL application and dedicated watch faces can expose altitude, barometric pressure, direction, sunrise and sunset, tide or fishing information and other environmental readings. Availability varies with software version, country, phone platform and configuration; Casio’s FAQ and feature documentation describe the supported combinations.

The ACTIVITY application targets trekking, cycling, fishing and other activities, presenting information such as distance, heading and altitude where supported. Casio’s updated WSD-F10/F20 manual records important exclusions after later software updates: some activity types, Activity history/export, certain watch faces and Location Memory are unavailable on the WSD-F10.

Some TOOL, ACTIVITY and MOMENT SETTER functions require the phone-installed CASIO MOMENT SETTER+ component. Install it only through Casio’s current support route, not an arbitrary APK mirror.
Important: there is no built-in GPS
The WSD-F10 does not contain its own GPS. Location information comes from the paired phone. This means the watch cannot independently record a hike or provide phone-free navigation in the manner of later GPS-equipped Casio watches, Garmin models or current outdoor wearables. A phone must be nearby and connected for location-dependent functions, and phone-derived altitude or GPS readings may not equal actual elevation.
Android Wear features and their limits
As an Android Wear watch, the WSD-F10 handles notifications, watch faces, voice functions through its microphone, phone-linked communication and third-party Wear apps. The physical shortcuts make Casio tools faster to reach than on many ordinary 2016 smartwatches.
The compromise is conceptual. Android Wear was built around a stream of phone notifications, while an outdoor watch is often valued for focus and quick, glanceable information. Contemporary reviews from Digital Trends, Stuff and Wareable all recognized the unusual combination of rugged construction and smartwatch software, while noting the bulk and the tension between notifications and outdoor use.

Casio’s current compatibility guidance recommends Android 6.0 or later, excluding Android Go, and iOS 12 or later with limited functionality. Compatibility can vary by phone, country and feature. Older configurations using Android 4.3 or iOS 9 may continue to function, but those legacy figures should not be treated as a recommendation for a new setup.

There is a more serious ownership issue: Casio says distribution of the Wear OS phone app through Google Play ended on November 1, 2025. Android owners should follow Casio’s official download instructions. Depending on the phone and region, setup may require an official sideload or another Casio-directed route. The WSD-F10 is therefore no longer a straightforward plug-and-play purchase.
Do not assume every current Android phone fails, but verify the exact model and operating-system version before buying. iPhone pairing is possible under Casio’s guidance, yet communication-dependent features require the Wear OS app running on the iPhone and functionality is restricted. It is a poor substitute for Apple Watch integration.

- Charge the watch and confirm that it boots without random shutdowns.
- Ask the seller whether the correct charger is included.
- Factory-reset the watch if it was paired to another owner.
- Check Casio’s current compatibility page for your exact phone and OS.
- Use Casio’s official Wear OS download and pairing instructions.
- Install CASIO MOMENT SETTER+ if you need outdoor tools or ACTIVITY settings.
- Test notifications, phone connection, compass/barometer tools and every location-dependent feature before relying on it outdoors.
Common problems
The Wear OS app cannot be found: Google Play distribution ended according to Casio; use its official download page rather than an unknown APK source.
Pairing fails after changing phones: Remove old pairing data, restart both devices, factory-reset the watch and retry the supported Casio process. Check for Android Go, regional or phone-model restrictions. Casio’s WSD-F10 FAQ is the appropriate next reference.
Outdoor readings look wrong: Distinguish phone GPS location, sensor-estimated altitude and actual elevation. Weather, calibration, phone connection and satellite conditions all matter.
Activity history or export is missing: On the WSD-F10 this may be an unsupported function, not a setup mistake.

It works only as a watch: Timepiece Mode, lost phone connection, companion-app failure, an aging battery or current software limitations can all produce this behavior.

The WSD-F10 can make sense for a Casio collector, someone who wants large physical buttons and a monochrome fallback mode, or a buyer seeking basic notifications at a very low used price. It is also an interesting piece of smartwatch history.
It is a poor fit for serious hikers, runners and cyclists who need independent GPS, route recording, reliable activity history, modern health sensors, long-term software support or a lightweight case. It is also a poor choice for iPhone owners expecting Apple Watch-level integration.
Alternatives by use case
- GPS outdoor watch: Better for phone-free navigation, training data, battery endurance and activity history.
- Current Wear OS watch: Better for modern apps, speed, displays and Android support.
- Apple Watch: The natural ecosystem choice for iPhone owners, though not for Android users seeking Casio styling.
- Later Casio WSD model: May add GPS and newer hardware, but verify the exact model’s compatibility, app availability and battery condition before purchase.
Final verdict
Historically, the WSD-F10 was a bold and successful concept: rugged Casio construction, glove-friendly buttons, outdoor instruments and Android Wear in one watch. Its weaknesses—size, phone dependence and notification-heavy software—were already visible at launch. In 2026 those weaknesses are decisive, joined by aged batteries, unsupported features and an unusual app-distribution process.
Buy one only when the price is low, the battery and charger are verified, pairing with your phone is confirmed and you specifically want Casio’s design. For dependable outdoor navigation or a modern smartwatch, choose a current GPS-focused or actively supported device instead.
