To remove selected files from an SD card for ordinary use, delete them in a file manager and empty its Trash. To clear the whole card, back up anything you need, then format the card in Android’s storage settings. Neither ordinary deletion nor formatting guarantees that every flash-memory cell is unrecoverable; for highly sensitive data, use a verified secure-erase method supported by the card or destroy it.
Choose the right method first

Android menus and available options vary by phone maker, Android version, and whether the card is configured as portable or adopted storage. Google’s SD-card guide describes the storage modes and warns users to back up before formatting.
Before deleting or formatting
- Confirm which card you are working on. Check its name, capacity, and contents before confirming an erase.
- Back up anything you want to keep. Formatting deletes the card’s contents. Do not remove it or interrupt the phone while it is writing or formatting.
- Check how the card is configured. A portable card is meant to store files and can generally move between compatible devices. Adopted, or internal, storage is formatted and encrypted for one Android device and may hold apps or private data. See Android’s adoptable-storage documentation.
- Check other copies. Deleting a card file does not necessarily delete an imported copy in Google Photos, a cloud backup, an email attachment, or a file sent through a messaging app.
Delete selected files and empty Trash
In Files by Google, open the app and tap the SD card under Storage devices. Select the files or folders, tap the delete control or More, then choose Move to Trash if that option appears. To finish, open Menu > Trash, select the items, tap Delete, and confirm. Google says files normally stay in Trash for 30 days unless permanently deleted sooner; the exact behavior can depend on the app version. Format the whole SD card on Android
Use this when you can erase the entire card and want to prepare it for ordinary reuse or hand it over after routine cleanup.
- Copy any files you want to keep somewhere else.
- Open Settings and find Storage. Depending on the phone, the section may be called Storage & USB, appear under Device care, or use another manufacturer-specific label.
- Select the SD card. If necessary, open the overflow menu (often three dots) and choose Storage settings.
- Choose the available format option, which may be labelled Format, Format SD card, Erase & format, or Format as portable.
- Verify that the selected storage is the correct SD card, then confirm. Keep the card in the phone until the operation finishes.
Formatting erases the selected card’s contents. Do not confirm until you have checked the selected storage device and saved anything you need. Google documents several format paths and labels in its SD-card troubleshooting guide; the precise route depends on the device and card mode.

If the card is being prepared for a camera, console, or another device, format it using that destination device afterward if it requires a particular filesystem. Formatting does not remove copies already stored elsewhere.
If the card is adopted or formatted as internal storage
An adopted card is not equivalent to a portable card that simply holds photos. Android formats and encrypts adopted media for the device that adopted it; the encryption keys are kept on the device’s internal storage. As a result, the card may not work as a readable, transferable drive in another phone. Formatting it as portable storage destroys the adopted volume and its contents. Do not remove, reset, or reformat it if you still need data stored there.

On supported phones, look under Settings > Storage > SD card, then open the overflow menu or Storage settings for a format option. Depending on the device, Android may offer Format as portable, Format another way, or similar wording. Follow the on-screen description and confirm only if you intend to erase the card. Google describes these variants in its Android SD-card help.
If you are unsure whether the card is adopted, check its status in Settings before removing it. A card that is visible in Settings but absent from Files by Google may be formatted as internal storage, according to Google’s troubleshooting guidance.

A phone factory reset is not a substitute
A factory reset primarily erases the phone’s internal data. It is not a reliable substitute for separately handling a removable SD card: Android’s reset guidance warns that card data may not be deleted. If you are selling a phone, handle the card separately and reset the phone separately. A reset may make an adopted card’s encrypted data inaccessible by removing keys stored on the phone, but that is not the same as proving that every physical flash block has been overwritten; this depends on the implementation.

Deleting a file usually removes its normal filesystem reference or sends it to an app’s Trash. Formatting replaces the card’s filesystem structure so the old contents are no longer available through ordinary browsing. Neither action should be described as guaranteed physical erasure.

SD cards use flash memory controllers that manage physical locations, including wear and remapping. A file’s logical location does not necessarily map neatly to every physical copy that may have existed. Research on secure deletion in log-structured flash filesystems explains why ordinary overwriting is not universally reliable. Do not assume that repeatedly copying files over the card or running a generic overwrite app will reach every relevant flash block.
For normal consumer reuse, Android formatting is the practical option. For highly sensitive or regulated information, use a documented secure-erase capability only if it genuinely applies to the card and can be verified, or destroy the card. NIST’s media-sanitization guidance distinguishes methods such as clearing, purging, and destruction and cautions that assurance depends on the storage medium and implementation. No universal claim that a routine Android format makes recovery impossible is justified.
If Android cannot see or format the card
- Not listed in Files by Google: Check Settings > Storage first. If Settings sees it but Files does not, it may be adopted/internal storage. If neither sees it, power down if appropriate, reseat the card, and try a compatible device or card reader.
- Format option is missing or fails: Confirm the card’s storage mode and look for the manufacturer’s storage controls. A different compatible phone or a computer’s disk-management tool may be able to reformat it, but verify the selected disk carefully before erasing.
- Read-only error: Check whether a full-size SD adapter’s lock switch is set to read-only. A microSD card itself generally relies on the host or adapter for this switch.
- Repeated corruption, wrong capacity, or recurring read-only behavior: Back up any accessible data. The card may be failing or counterfeit; reformatting cannot reliably repair physically failing media, so replacement may be necessary.
- Data not backed up or card may be damaged: Do not keep attempting formats. Repeated writes can reduce the chance of recovering data you still need.
Recovery after deletion or formatting varies with the filesystem, card controller, encryption, and later writes. Recovery apps cannot guarantee they will recover files, and they cannot guarantee secure erasure of every physical flash location. Avoid installing or saving recovery tools onto the card you are trying to recover, because new writes can overwrite data.
