Best overall consumer pick: Sony WH-1000XM6. It combines strong call performance with noise cancellation, multipoint connectivity and portability; What Hi-Fi? names it a leading choice for voice and video calls. For a noisy office, consider a work headset with a boom microphone instead: putting the mic close to your mouth can be more useful than choosing headphones based on wearer-side ANC alone. This guide covers both consumer headphones and dedicated work or gaming headsets. It is not a hands-on ranking of all 15 models: where comparative call-test evidence is not established, the recommendation is based on the product’s intended use and the available source material, not a claim that its microphone beats every alternative.
How to choose headphones for calls
Separate what you hear from what the other person hears. Active noise cancellation (ANC) reduces sound reaching you; the microphone system determines how much of your surroundings reach the caller. Strong ANC does not, by itself, prove strong outgoing voice isolation.
- Microphone: Listen for a natural, sufficiently loud voice without a distant, muffled, thin or robotic quality. A boom mic sits close to the mouth and has a physical advantage for voice pickup, though actual results vary by headset and environment.
- Noise rejection: Consider the sounds where you take calls: keyboard typing, nearby conversation, fans, HVAC, traffic, café noise and wind. Indoor performance does not establish outdoor wind performance.
- Comfort: Clamp force, earcup depth, heat, headband pressure and fit with glasses can matter more over a long meeting than weight alone. Fit and comfort are individual.
- Controls: A physical mute button or flip-to-mute boom is easier to verify by touch than a gesture. A headset can mute locally without synchronizing with the mute indicator in Teams, Zoom or another app. Sony says its microphone mute may not link to every calling application; check the behavior in your actual setup. - Connection: Bluetooth multipoint is convenient for switching between a computer and phone, but behavior can vary by operating system and app. A dedicated USB receiver or USB audio connection may be a better computer-call fallback. Sidetone—the sound of your own voice fed back into the headphones—can help you avoid speaking too loudly. Its quality and availability differ by product. Likewise, Teams certification refers to a particular product variant and defined integration; it does not guarantee identical controls in Zoom, Google Meet, browser calls or mobile calls.

These are category picks, not a single microphone-performance ranking. The list includes consumer ANC headphones, office headsets and gaming headsets because they address different call conditions. Exact current prices, stock, bundle contents and model-specific compatibility are not established here; verify them with the manufacturer before buying.
1. Sony WH-1000XM6 — best overall consumer headphones
The XM6 is the most balanced recommendation for someone who wants one portable headphone for calls, travel and music. What Hi-Fi? identifies it as a leading call pick, and SoundGuys also highlights its microphone and feature set. Sony lists 12 microphones and up to 30 hours of battery life; those are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative measurements. Choose it for: a quiet home office, travel, and general-purpose calls without a boom mic. Look elsewhere if: you need the closer voice pickup and tactile controls of a dedicated office headset, or rely on app-synchronized mute.

3. Apple AirPods Max 2 — best for Apple users

14. SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless — best multi-device gaming/work setup
The Nova Pro Wireless is aimed at people who want a gaming-oriented multi-device workflow, base station and boom mic. If you take occasional calls on a plane, a consumer ANC model may be the better all-round purchase. If you spend the day in a loud open office, a business headset can be the more appropriate tool even if it is less attractive for music.
Choose by where you take calls

Connectivity checks before buying
- Identify the calling device and app. Test the exact combination—such as Windows plus Teams, Mac plus Zoom, or an iPhone call—because controls and audio behavior can differ.
- Check multipoint behavior. Confirm that the headset can remain connected to your computer and phone as you expect. Multipoint does not necessarily mean two simultaneous calls, instant switching or identical behavior across operating systems.
- Look for a computer fallback. If calls are frequent, check whether the model supports USB audio or includes a USB receiver. Do not assume a receiver is included because one is available as an accessory.
- Test mute synchronization. Make a test call and confirm both the headset’s mute state and the app’s on-screen indicator. This matters particularly when you rely on visual confirmation.
