That message usually means the Xbox account you’re signed into is already connected to a Ubisoft account—often an older one you no longer use. Ubisoft’s linking rules generally allow one account per participating platform, so trying to connect the same Xbox identity to a second Ubisoft account can trigger the warning. Find and recover the Ubisoft account that already has the link before you unlink anything; changing accounts can put access to game progress or other account data at risk.
What “already linked” means
The message is about the Xbox account or gamertag, not the physical Xbox console. Signing into the same Xbox account on another console normally does not create a new Xbox identity or remove its existing Ubisoft link. A used console is not automatically the cause either; check which Xbox profile is signed in when you launch the game.
Ubisoft documents a one-account-per-participating-platform linking arrangement in its cross-progression guidance. In practical terms, your Xbox account may already be associated with the Ubisoft account you are trying to use—or with another Ubisoft account. The warning usually reflects an existing association, though an unusual authentication problem can also produce confusing prompts.
Why you may not remember linking it
- You connected accounts while launching a Ubisoft game for the first time.
- You chose to create or sign into a Ubisoft account in an in-game setup flow, possibly using an email address you no longer use.
- You changed email addresses or are signing into a different Ubisoft account than the one you used years ago.
- Someone else previously used your Xbox profile and connected it to their Ubisoft account.
- The Xbox profile is a child, family, or secondary account whose setup was handled by someone else.
Ubisoft’s terms describe linking a third-party platform account as something that may be required for access to its services; that does not mean Ubisoft creates an account automatically every time. An association may simply date back to a setup you do not recall.

Check which Ubisoft account has the Xbox link
- Open Ubisoft account information.
- Sign in with a Ubisoft email address you may have used. If you have several possibilities, check them one at a time.
- Find the linked accounts or platform connections area and look for Xbox or Microsoft.
- Before making changes, note the Ubisoft username and email shown, and confirm whether this is the account you expect to use for the game.
- If you find the Xbox connection on the account you want, return to the game and authenticate with that same Ubisoft account.
Search old email inboxes—including spam and archived folders—for Ubisoft registration, verification, password-reset, purchase, or account-linking messages. An old Ubisoft email can help identify the account, but use Ubisoft’s official recovery process rather than relying on an email alone to regain access.
If the link belongs to an old Ubisoft account
Recover the old account before considering unlinking. Try Ubisoft’s password reset for likely email addresses and check older inboxes or aliases. If a parent or guardian managed a child’s account, involve them in recovery. Once you regain access, sign into the game with the Ubisoft account that already owns the Xbox connection.

This is usually safer because game progression and other data may be tied to the Ubisoft account, not just the Xbox profile. Ubisoft’s cross-progression guidance explains that progress can remain with the Ubisoft account used in a merge even if the console account is later relinked. Do not assume saves, rewards, purchases, cosmetics, or entitlements will move to another Ubisoft account.

First work out which account holds the relevant game profile, progression, and entitlements. If you can access both accounts, compare them before changing the link. If the existing account has important progress or purchases—or you cannot tell where the data resides—contact Ubisoft Support before unlinking.

Unlinking and continuing with the same Ubisoft account is different from unlinking and trying to attach the Xbox account to a different Ubisoft account. The second option may be restricted, and it may not move progress. The exact consequences depend on the game and account state. For example, Ubisoft’s documented For Honor cross-progression rules say a console account can be unlinked and relinked to a different Ubisoft account up to two times, while progress stays on the Ubisoft account used for the merge. That game-specific limit should not be treated as a universal rule for every Ubisoft title.
How to unlink, if you have confirmed it is necessary
Use Ubisoft’s account-linking help page as the starting point. Menu names and available options can vary with the site design, region, game, and account.

- Sign in to the Ubisoft account currently connected to the Xbox account.
- Open account management or account information and locate linked accounts or platform connections.
- Select the Xbox connection and review whether an unlink option is available.
- Read the warning on screen carefully. Do not confirm unless you understand which Ubisoft account will retain progress and what relinking restrictions may apply.
If you cannot clearly identify the connected Ubisoft account, or the warning does not make the outcome clear, stop and contact support. Unlinking is not a universal fix, and it should not be used as a way to test which account is correct.

When to contact Ubisoft Support
Go to Ubisoft Help if you cannot access the account that owns the link, cannot identify the email address, see important progress on the wrong account, have already relinked accounts, or are dealing with a child or family account whose ownership is unclear.

Include your Xbox gamertag, Ubisoft username if known, possible email addresses, the exact error text, the game and platform, and an approximate date when the link may have been created. Screenshots can help, but redact sensitive details. Provide proof of ownership only through Ubisoft’s official support process. Never give a password, one-time verification code, recovery key, or full payment-card details to someone claiming to be support.
What usually will not fix the link
- Reinstalling the game or restarting the Xbox: these steps do not normally change which Ubisoft account is connected to the Xbox identity.
- Switching consoles: the link follows the Xbox account, not the hardware.
- Creating another Ubisoft account: a new account does not remove the old association and can make it harder to track where progress is stored.
- Canceling or buying Ubisoft+: a subscription is not an account-reset method. Ubisoft+ Premium is offered for Xbox consoles, but Ubisoft says progression remains saved and linked to the Ubisoft account. Resolve the account association first.
The effects also vary by game: a link conflict may block sign-in, show an unfamiliar profile, or affect where progression or rewards appear. Do not assume Xbox saves, achievements, first-party purchases, and Ubisoft progression all transfer in the same way. For instance, a store may show its own purchase status differently from how an entitlement appears in-game.
