Use your laptop maker’s battery-health setting to stop charging near 80%. Windows has no universal switch that imposes an 80% limit on every laptop; the control is usually in the manufacturer’s app or BIOS/UEFI. Find your brand below, enable the limit or conservation mode, then check the manufacturer’s app to confirm it took effect.
Find the charging control for your laptop
| Laptop | Where to look | What the setting may be called |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Surface | Surface app | Limit to 80% |
| ASUS | MyASUS | Battery Care Mode or Battery Health Charging |
| Dell | Dell Power Manager, Dell Optimizer, or BIOS/UEFI | Custom, Charging Mode, or Battery Configuration |
| HP | BIOS/UEFI or HP Power Manager | Battery Health Manager or a battery-health option |
| Lenovo | Lenovo Vantage, Legion Space, or BIOS/UEFI | Conservation Mode or Battery Charge Threshold |
| MacBook | macOS System Settings | Charge Limit |
Names and availability vary by model, software version, and firmware. If you cannot find the option, look up the exact model number on the manufacturer’s support site rather than relying on a brand-wide menu path.
Set the limit by brand
Microsoft Surface
Open the Surface app, select Battery & charging, then under Charging mode choose Limit to 80%. To resume charging to full capacity, return to this menu and select Adaptive or Charge to 100%. The manual limit is available only on compatible models; check Microsoft’s Surface Smart Charging guide and model feature table.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSurface Smart Charging can also activate automatically after extended time on AC power or exposure to elevated temperatures. It may hold or bring the battery near 80%, sometimes indicated by a heart icon on the Windows battery icon. This adaptive behavior is not the same as turning on a permanent manual cap.

ASUS
Open MyASUS and look in device or battery settings for Battery Care Mode or Battery Health Charging. Choose the 80% option if your model offers it, then apply the setting. Some supported models offer 60%, 80%, and 100%; ASUS uses different names across platforms. See its battery charging feature guide.
If the control is missing, check your model’s official ASUS support page and BIOS/UEFI. Installing MyASUS cannot add a feature that the laptop hardware or firmware does not support.
Dell
On supported systems, open Dell Power Manager or Dell Optimizer, then look under Battery Settings or Power → Charging Mode. Choose Custom and set the stop threshold to 80%. If asked for a start threshold, set a lower value, such as 50–60%; the BIOS may require a minimum gap between the two thresholds. Dell documents custom thresholds in its Power Manager guide and Dell Optimizer guide.
You may instead find the option in firmware: restart the laptop, tap F2 during startup, and inspect the Power or Battery section for Battery Configuration, Primary Battery Charge Configuration, Charging Mode, or Custom. Save changes before exiting. Menu labels and options differ by model; Dell’s battery troubleshooting guide describes several possible modes.

Do not confuse a charge limit with ExpressCharge. ExpressCharge can take a battery to around 80% quickly and then charge more slowly toward 100%; reaching 80% fast does not mean a permanent cap is enabled. Dell’s Smart Charging behavior, including an 80% pause, is documented for certain newer systems and is not universal across Dell laptops (model-specific Smart Charging information).
HP
On supported HP business notebooks, restart and press F10 during startup to enter BIOS/UEFI. Open the battery or power-management area, find HP Battery Health Manager, and select the battery-health option recommended for a laptop that stays connected to AC power—often Maximize My Battery Health. Save and restart. Some models use HP Power Manager for related controls. HP’s Battery Health Manager information describes Intelligent Charging that can reduce charge to approximately 80% after several consecutive days at a high charge level.
HP’s approach is often automatic rather than an editable “stop exactly at 80%” control, and availability varies widely by model and firmware. On some systems, the displayed 100% means 100% of an adjusted usable capacity, not the battery’s original design maximum. See HP’s Power Manager battery guidance.

Open Lenovo Vantage or, on some gaming models, Legion Space. Look in Power, Battery, or Device Settings for Conservation Mode, Battery Conservation, or Battery Charge Threshold. Enable the relevant mode and check its displayed maximum. Some models use a fixed range near 75–80% rather than allowing you to enter an exact percentage; others expose the control in BIOS/UEFI. The feature and path are model-dependent, so consult the exact Lenovo model’s support documentation if the setting is absent.

MacBook
On supported Macs and macOS versions, open System Settings → Battery, then Battery Health or Charging Options, and set Charge Limit to 80% if available. Apple notes that the Mac may charge to within a few percentage points of the selected limit and display a message such as “Charged to [percentage] Limit.” To remove the cap, change the limit or charging option. Optimized Battery Charging is different: it learns usage patterns and may delay charging past 80%, but it does not impose a permanent 80% ceiling. See Apple’s charging-limit guidance.
How to tell whether it is working
The battery may stay near 80% while the laptop remains plugged in, and Windows may say Plugged in, not charging. Some systems show a heart, plug, or battery-health icon. A small fluctuation around the threshold or charging restarting only after the level falls below a lower point can also be normal. The laptop may run from AC power while its battery-management controller pauses battery charging.
Check the manufacturer’s app or BIOS status as well as the operating system’s battery icon. If you just enabled the setting and the battery reaches 100%, verify that you selected a hard limit rather than adaptive charging. Apply the setting, restart, reconnect the official charger, and allow enough time for the battery to reach the threshold. Firmware updates or adaptive behavior can change when a device allows a full charge.

How to charge to 100% again
Use the same control where you set the limit: on Surface choose Adaptive or Charge to 100%; on ASUS select the 100% mode; on Dell choose the standard or appropriate non-custom mode, or remove the custom threshold; on HP change the battery-health mode if an option is offered; on Lenovo turn off Conservation Mode or the threshold; on Mac change or disable Charge Limit. Exact labels differ.

Temporarily restore full charging before a flight, long trip, full day away from an outlet, or other occasion when runtime matters more than the cap. Microsoft specifically recommends pausing Surface Smart Charging when full capacity is needed for travel or extended time away from power (Surface guidance).
What if there is no 80% option?
First identify the exact laptop model—not just its brand. Then install or update the official manufacturer power-management app, check BIOS/UEFI battery settings, and consult the model’s manual or support page. Use BIOS and firmware updates only from the manufacturer’s support page and for the exact model.
Some laptops have only automatic battery-health charging, a fixed conservation mode, or no user-selectable limit. Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not provide a universal setting that can create a hardware charge threshold where the manufacturer has not exposed one. Avoid registry edits or random utilities that claim to force a cap; they cannot reliably add a firmware-level feature. Third-party software is not a guaranteed substitute for the maker’s supported control.

- Mostly plugged in: A supported battery-health or conservation mode is a practical choice.
- Frequently away from an outlet: Use 100% when the extra runtime matters; a permanent 80% cap costs usable time.
- Often in a hot environment: Reduce heat as well as avoiding prolonged high charge. Heat and time at high charge can contribute to battery aging.
- Storing the laptop for weeks or months: Follow the manufacturer’s storage guidance rather than assuming 80% is the correct storage level.
Lithium-ion batteries generally age faster when held at high charge for long periods, especially with heat. A limit is a battery-health trade-off, not a guarantee of a particular lifespan extension. Microsoft describes Surface Smart Charging as a way to reduce charging patterns and elevated temperatures that can accelerate deterioration (Microsoft’s explanation).

Troubleshooting
The battery stops below 80%
Check whether a storage or conservation mode is set to 50% or 60%, whether a custom start/stop threshold is incorrect, or whether adaptive charging is active. If charging is unusually slow or does not resume, verify that the charger is compatible and recognized. On Dell, an unknown or wrong-wattage adapter can cause charging problems; check adapter status in BIOS and consult Dell’s troubleshooting steps. Persistent problems may indicate battery or charging-circuit failure.
The setting is enabled but charging reaches 100%
Confirm that the setting is a fixed cap rather than an adaptive mode, reconnect the charger after applying it, and check whether a restart or firmware update changed the setting. Some systems intentionally permit 100% based on usage; others show 100% of a reduced usable capacity. The operating-system percentage alone may not explain what the battery-health controller is doing.
The laptop stops at 80% only during fast charging
It may be the charging-speed profile rather than a charge limit. For example, Dell documents ExpressCharge reaching roughly 80% quickly and then continuing more slowly. Wait and check whether charging proceeds toward 100% before changing battery-health settings.

The battery is swollen or the laptop is abnormally hot
A software setting cannot fix a damaged battery. If the case is bulging, the trackpad is lifting, or the battery is visibly expanded, disconnect power if safe and stop using the laptop. Do not press, puncture, or remove an internal battery unless qualified; contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Microsoft likewise advises stopping Surface use if its battery has visibly expanded beyond the enclosure (battery safety guidance).
