To stop Windows from automatically installing graphics drivers, Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education users can enable Do not include drivers with Windows Updates in Local Group Policy. That setting affects drivers for all devices, not just the GPU. If you want to block only one graphics card, use a device-installation restriction for its hardware ID instead. If a vendor or PC-maker utility is doing the updating, change that utility’s settings separately.
First identify the source: open Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Driver updates and note the driver’s name, provider, version, and date. Windows Update, NVIDIA App, AMD Software, Intel’s utility, and an OEM updater are independent sources; blocking one does not necessarily stop the others.
Choose the right method
| What you want to stop | Use this method | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| All driver packages delivered by Windows Update | Group Policy: Do not include drivers with Windows Updates | Also affects chipset, network, audio, storage, Bluetooth, and other drivers. |
| Updates or reinstallation for one GPU | Group Policy device-installation restriction using that device’s hardware ID or instance ID | May also prevent the GPU’s driver from being installed after cleanup or hardware changes. |
| Downloads initiated by NVIDIA App, AMD Software, Intel, or a PC maker | Change that application’s update settings | Does not control Windows Update. |
| A one-time driver reinstall | Temporarily pause updates or disconnect from the internet while reinstalling, then apply a suitable persistent setting | Temporary steps alone are not a lasting block. |
Microsoft recommends allowing driver updates by default, since they can deliver stability, compatibility, and security fixes. Consider blocking them only when you have a specific reason, such as a known driver regression or a fixed production setup. See Microsoft’s guidance on automatic and optional driver updates.

Stop Windows Update from delivering all drivers (Pro, Enterprise, Education)
This is the clearest Microsoft-documented built-in option when you want to approve every driver manually. It is generally available through Local Group Policy Editor on Windows Pro, Enterprise, Education, and similar managed editions. The normal Windows Home interface does not include gpedit.msc.

- Select Enabled, then select Apply and OK.
- Refresh policy from an elevated Command Prompt with
gpupdate /force, or restart Windows. - Install your chosen graphics driver manually from the GPU maker or, especially on a laptop, the computer maker.
Microsoft describes this policy in its Windows Update Group Policy reference and Windows Update settings documentation. Enabling it excludes driver updates from Windows Update; it does not turn off driver updates from vendor apps or OEM utilities. Nor does it necessarily remove every driver offer from every Windows screen.
Before enabling it: download or otherwise keep access to essential network, Wi-Fi, chipset, and storage drivers. If Windows Update has been your only way to obtain a driver, you may need those packages after a clean installation or device change.
Undo the broad policy
Return to the same policy and select Not Configured (or Disabled), then choose Apply and OK. Run gpupdate /force or restart. Windows Update can then offer drivers again; it may not immediately reinstall a particular package.

Block one GPU rather than every driver
A device-installation restriction is narrower when you want Windows Update to keep handling other hardware. It requires Group Policy and care: a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics may list more than one display adapter, and restricting the wrong one can affect hybrid graphics, external displays, sleep, or power management.
Find the correct device ID
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, right-click the intended GPU, and choose Properties.
- Open Details. In Property, select Hardware Ids or Device instance path.
- Copy the specific value shown for that GPU. Hardware IDs often contain vendor codes such as
VEN_10DE(NVIDIA),VEN_1002(AMD), orVEN_8086(Intel). Do not use a vendor prefix alone unless you intend to affect every matching device.
Set the restriction
- Open
gpedit.mscand go to Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → System → Device Installation → Device Installation Restrictions. - Open Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs for a hardware-ID rule, or Prevent installation of devices for these device instances for an instance-specific rule.
- Select Enabled, then select Show and paste the copied ID into the list. Choose OK, then Apply and OK.
- Run
gpupdate /forceand restart Windows.
Microsoft documents these controls under Manage device installation with Group Policy. Device-installation policies can interact with other restrictions and administrator-override policies, so behavior on managed PCs may depend on the organization’s configuration.
Be ready to undo the restriction. A hardware-ID rule can block installation of that GPU’s driver after a driver cleanup, and a blocked device may fall back to Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. An instance ID can change when hardware or system configuration changes. To reverse the change, reopen the policy, remove or disable the relevant restriction, apply the policy, restart, and install the intended driver.

Windows Home: what you can and cannot do
Windows Home users generally cannot follow the Local Group Policy steps above because the standard edition does not provide the Local Group Policy Editor. Avoid treating downloaded registry tweaks as an equivalent, universally reliable fix: their behavior can depend on Windows version and configuration, and an incorrectly broad restriction can block other devices.

A legacy preference may be available at Settings → System → About → Advanced system settings → Hardware → Device Installation Settings. Choose the option commonly labeled No, then save. This is a broad preference about automatic manufacturer apps and custom icons, not a dependable GPU-specific firewall, and it should not be assumed to block every Windows Update driver on every current Windows build.
For a Home PC, first determine whether a vendor or OEM utility is responsible and turn off its automatic update option. For a short driver reinstall, pause Windows Update or disconnect temporarily, install the correct package, and reconnect. Those temporary measures do not guarantee that Windows Update will never offer a driver again.

Stop a graphics vendor or PC-maker app from updating
If Update History does not show the change, or the driver changes when a vendor tool runs, use that tool’s own controls. These settings are separate from Windows Update.
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
In AMD Software, open System Settings and then Manage Updates to open AMD Install Manager. Clear Automatically keep AMD Software up to date. AMD notes that menus can vary by system and software version; its documented steps refer to Adrenalin Edition 25.6.1, so labels may differ in later releases. For a manual package, use AMD’s official driver-selection page.
NVIDIA App
Open NVIDIA App → Settings → Drivers and turn off automatic download or update-related options if present. Exact labels can change between releases. NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App announcement describes automatic driver downloads and related settings. To choose a package manually, use NVIDIA’s official driver-download page.

Intel and manufacturer tools
Intel graphics updates may come from Windows Update, Intel’s support utility, or the PC maker. Laptop owners should check the manufacturer’s support page and updater first. OEM graphics packages can include customizations for hybrid graphics, display switching, power management, or hotkeys; a generic package is not automatically interchangeable with the laptop’s validated driver.
Reinstall the driver Windows already replaced
- Temporarily pause Windows Update or disconnect from the internet so another package is less likely to arrive during installation.
- Open Device Manager → Display adapters → your GPU → Properties → Driver. Note the provider, date, and version. If Roll Back Driver is available, try it first.
- If rollback is unavailable or does not solve the problem, install the intended package from the GPU manufacturer or the PC maker. On laptops, try the OEM package first if the system relies on hybrid graphics or manufacturer-specific features.
- Apply the appropriate Windows Update policy or vendor-app setting before resuming normal updates.
- Restart and verify the provider, driver date, and version in Device Manager.
If the display is unstable, try Windows Safe Mode or System Restore if a restore point exists. Microsoft Basic Display Adapter can provide a temporary basic display while you restore the correct package. AMD also provides driver support and its own Cleanup Utility through its graphics software support page. A cleanup tool removes driver components; it is not by itself a lasting block on future Windows Update installs.
Check whether the block worked
- Open Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- If available, inspect Advanced options → Optional updates → Driver updates. An offered driver is not necessarily an installed driver; the policy may prevent installation without removing every offer from the interface.
- Open Update history → Driver updates and check whether the previously installed package appears after the next update cycle.
- In Device Manager → Display adapters → GPU → Properties → Driver, record the provider, date, and version. Restart and check again.
If the driver still changes, or another device stops working
- The GPU driver still updates: Check Update History and the vendor/OEM utilities. Confirm that you edited the computer policy, that the change was applied, and that the device is not managed by another policy. A driver already staged before the policy change may also need separate handling.
- The GPU becomes Microsoft Basic Display Adapter: A device-ID restriction may be blocking its driver. Remove or correct that rule, apply policy, restart, and reinstall the correct package.
- Wi-Fi, chipset, audio, or another driver stops arriving: This is an expected consequence of the broad Windows Update policy. Install that driver manually or revert the policy.
- A laptop’s display switching or external monitor stops working: Reconsider which adapter was restricted and reinstall the laptop maker’s package.
- A driver changes after a major Windows upgrade: Recheck the policy and vendor/OEM updater, then verify the exact version in Device Manager and Update History. Do not assume one policy controls every driver source or every future Windows behavior.
Revisit any block after a major Windows release, a new game or application requirement, a relevant security advisory, or a hardware change. Manual control is most useful when paired with a known-good installer and a clear rollback plan—not as a set-and-forget guarantee.
