Replace GPU thermal paste when evidence points to poor contact between the GPU die and cooler—not on a fixed calendar. First rule out dust, airflow, fan, and ambient-temperature problems, then check the warranty and find a teardown guide for your exact card. The basic repair is to remove the cooler, preserve the thermal pads, clean the bare die and heatsink, apply a thin, complete layer of non-conductive paste, and reinstall the cooler evenly. Screw layouts, cables, and pad placement vary by model, so there is no universal GPU disassembly procedure.

Should you repaste your graphics card?

Repasting is most defensible when temperatures or fan noise have worsened despite clean filters and adequate case airflow, the GPU is throttling, or its hotspot temperature has become unusually high relative to its core temperature. It is also appropriate if the cooler has already been removed: clean off the old compound and apply fresh paste before reinstalling it. An older or heavily used card may be a candidate, but age alone does not prove the paste has failed.

Before opening the card, check easier explanations: dust on the cooler, blocked case intakes, poor airflow, a failing fan, a changed fan curve, higher room temperature, or an overclock. Repasting a card that is operating normally may make little or no difference. There is no universal two-year replacement interval; the cited iFixit GPU repair guide concerns a specific repair, not a schedule for every card.

Check the warranty terms for the exact product and region before opening it. Policies differ between NVIDIA-branded Founders Edition cards and cards made by board partners such as ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, Sapphire, XFX, or PowerColor. Opening a card may affect service eligibility depending on those terms; it does not automatically settle the warranty question for every product. See NVIDIA’s graphics-card warranty information for its own branded cards, and consult the board partner for an AIB card. If the GPU is new, expensive, or still covered, manufacturer or authorized service may be the safer option.

Find instructions for your exact card

Identify the full model name and, if available, board revision. Search for that exact model plus “teardown,” “cooler removal,” or “thermal paste replacement.” Confirm the screw sequence, backplate and shroud arrangement, and fan or RGB connector locations. Look for reliable, model-specific information on thermal-pad locations and thicknesses before disturbing them. A guide for one card—even one with the same GPU chip—may not match another card’s cooler.

Before disassembly, photograph the card from several angles, the screw layout, cable routing, and any labels or seals. Use a phone or camera to document each stage as you work. Guides such as iFixit’s model-specific RTX 2070 Super repair illustrate why screw and pad details cannot be generalized.

What you need

  • The correct Phillips, Torx, or hex drivers for your card.
  • Non-conductive thermal paste suitable for direct-die use.
  • 90% or higher isopropyl alcohol; 99% is preferable when available.
  • Lint-free wipes, coffee filters, or laboratory wipes; cotton swabs can help with residue at edges if used carefully.
  • A clean, well-lit work surface and a container or magnetic mat to organize screws.
  • Antistatic precautions, ideally a wrist strap or at minimum grounded working practice.
  • Optional: a plastic pry tool, phone camera, and compressed air or an electric duster for cleaning.

Do not buy replacement thermal pads unless you have verified the correct material, footprint, and thickness for your card. Ordinary paste is for the GPU die in a design that uses paste there; VRAM and voltage-regulator components commonly use pads or putty instead. Incorrect pad thickness can keep the die from contacting the cooler properly. For most repairs, one suitable non-conductive paste is a more sensible default than liquid metal. For product-specific examples, Noctua describes NT-H2 as suitable for GPU applications, while ARCTIC publishes MX-6 specifications. Specifications and manufacturer performance claims do not guarantee a particular temperature result on your card.

Record a baseline before opening the card

Use monitoring software that exposes the relevant sensors and note readings at idle and during a repeatable game or benchmark. Record:

  • GPU core temperature and hotspot or junction temperature, if available.
  • Memory temperature, if the card reports it.
  • Fan speed, GPU clock, and whether the card is power- or temperature-limited.
  • Room temperature and the workload used.

Repeat the same workload after reassembly. There is no reliable universal temperature drop to expect: a healthy card may barely change, while dried, displaced, or poorly contacting material may respond substantially. GPU generations and vendors also differ, so do not treat one core or hotspot number as a universal safe limit.

Remove the GPU and cooler

  1. Power down safely. Shut down the computer, switch off the power supply, unplug the AC cable, and briefly press the case power button. Let the card cool to room temperature. Avoid working on carpet if possible.
  2. Remove the card. Take off the case side panel. Disconnect GPU power cables by their connector bodies, remove the card’s retention screws, release the motherboard’s PCIe latch, and support the card as you lift it straight out. Set it on an antistatic, nonconductive surface—not on metal, loose screws, or conductive debris.
  3. Study and document the cooler. Follow the instructions for your exact model. Remove the backplate, shroud, or other parts only in the documented sequence. The four spring-loaded screws around the GPU die are often the primary cooler fasteners, but not on every card.
  4. Loosen the cooler evenly. Loosen the die-mounting screws gradually in a cross or star pattern instead of fully removing one corner first. Remove remaining screws as the model-specific guide directs. NVIDIA warns against applying force during heatsink removal; see its graphics-card service guidance.
  5. Lift cautiously and unplug cables. Raise the heatsink only slightly at first. Look for fan, RGB, or auxiliary cables bridging cooler and PCB. Photograph each connector, then pull the plug body—not the wires. A plastic tool may help ease a stubborn plug, but do not lever against a tiny PCB socket.
  6. Free a stuck cooler gently. If old paste holds the cooler to the die, try a gentle side-to-side rock or twist. Confirm all retaining screws are out. Mild warming can soften old compound, but do not use an open flame or uncontrolled high heat, and never pry aggressively against the PCB.

For a laptop GPU or compact system, stop here and find its own service procedure. Laptop GPUs may share heatpipes with the CPU and use different pads, putty, or manufacturer-specific arrangements; desktop-card instructions do not transfer directly.

ARCTIC MX-7 (4 g, incl. MX-Cleaner) - Ultimate Performance Thermal Paste
  • NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
  • LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
  • PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
  • SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
  • INCLUDES MX CLEANER: Thoroughly removes old thermal paste and prepares contact surfaces for optimal performance before applying new thermal compound.

Inspect the thermal pads before cleaning

Before moving any pads, photograph them and note their positions and approximate dimensions. Check whether they have shifted, torn, hardened, or stuck to the cooler instead of the board. Do not replace pads just because the card is open, stack pads to guess a thickness, or substitute a stiffer pad without confirming fit and compression. If a pad tears, replace it only when its original thickness, footprint, and suitable material are known. Otherwise, pause and find model-specific information or use a repair professional. The iFixit thermal-pad guide explains why pad position and cooler pressure matter.

Clean the GPU die and cooler

  1. Wipe away the bulk of the old compound with a dry lint-free wipe.
  2. Dampen a wipe or swab with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol; apply it to the wipe, not directly to the PCB.
  3. Gently clean the exposed GPU die and the cooler’s contact plate until residue is gone. Keep liquid from pooling under components or connectors.
  4. Allow both surfaces to dry fully, then inspect the die under good light for residue, chips, cracks, or other damage.

The GPU die is exposed, unlike a CPU protected by an integrated heat spreader, so its edges can be damaged by scraping. Do not use a metal tool. The iFixit repaste guide describes alcohol cleaning, and NVIDIA’s Founders Edition teardown provides a further example of cooler disassembly.

Apply fresh thermal paste

Use a non-electrically conductive paste as the default. With a bare rectangular die, a thin, even spread that reaches every edge is a practical approach; a central dot alone does not ensure complete direct-die coverage. The goal is full coverage once compressed—not a thick layer or a prescribed gram amount, since die sizes differ.

  1. Put a small amount of fresh paste in the center of the clean die.
  2. Spread it into a thin, uniform layer covering the entire die, with no exposed patches, large ridges, or obvious air pockets.
  3. Keep paste off the surrounding PCB and components. Do not use GPU-core paste in place of pads or putty where the card’s design uses those interfaces.
  4. Do not reuse paste that has already been compressed between surfaces.

Liquid metal is not a default upgrade: it is electrically conductive and brings electrical-short, material-compatibility, and containment risks. Even non-conductive paste should be applied carefully. Intel’s thermal-interface guidance and Noctua’s application guidance both support renewing the interface when a heatsink is removed; the spreading method here is adapted for the exposed GPU die.

Reinstall the cooler evenly

  1. Check that all pads remain in their original positions and that no cable is trapped under the cooler.
  2. Align the heatsink vertically over the die and mounting holes, then lower it straight down without sliding it across the paste.
  3. Start every die-mounting screw a few turns before tightening any fully.
  4. Tighten the core screws gradually in a cross or star pattern, a little at a time, until snug. Do not overtighten.
  5. Reconnect fan, RGB, and auxiliary cables by their plugs. Reinstall the remaining screws, shroud, or backplate in the model-specific order.
  6. Check that the cooler sits evenly and does not rock.

Even, incremental tightening helps preserve contact pressure. The iFixit pad-replacement procedure likewise advises starting screws before tightening them in a star pattern.

Test the repair

Reinstall the card in the PCIe slot, reconnect all GPU power cables, and boot the computer. Confirm that the GPU is detected, display outputs work, and fans behave normally. Then run the same workload used for your baseline and compare core and hotspot temperatures, memory temperature if available, fan speed, clock behavior, and stability.

Stop the workload and shut down if the core temperature is higher than before, the hotspot rises sharply, fans run at maximum unexpectedly, or you see artifacts, crashes, black screens, driver resets, or unusual fan or electrical sounds. A successful repaste may reduce noise or prevent throttling if poor contact was the cause, but it does not inherently increase performance on a card that was already operating normally.

Troubleshooting after reassembly

  • Core temperature is worse: Check that the cooler is seated parallel to the die, paste covers the full surface, core screws were tightened evenly, and fans are connected. Verify that pads are in their original places and no protective film was left on a replacement interface.
  • Core seems acceptable but hotspot is much higher: Suspect uneven coverage or mounting pressure, poor cooler contact, a warped cooler, a misplaced or overly thick pad, or die damage. Recheck seating before buying a more expensive paste.
  • Fan does not spin: Shut down and check its connector and cable routing. Do not run a demanding workload with a fan disconnected.
  • No display, but fans spin: Do not assume paste caused it. Check the monitor input and display cable, card seating, power connectors, and display-output connections before reopening the cooler.
  • GPU is not detected: Shut down and unplug power. Reseat the card, reconnect its power cables, check fan or RGB connections, and inspect for loose screws, debris, or visible damage. If possible, try a known-good slot or system. Do not keep powering it on if you see PCB or die damage; seek professional service.

Do not force a second teardown until you have identified a likely cause. A misplaced pad can prevent proper die contact even when the paste itself is suitable.

When to stop and use a professional

Choose manufacturer or qualified repair service if the card is under warranty, high-value, or difficult to replace; if screw heads or connectors are damaged; if pad thicknesses cannot be verified; if you cannot find a trustworthy teardown for the exact model; or if the die or PCB appears damaged. A repair shop is also the sensible choice when you lack the right tools or are not comfortable working around a bare die and small connectors.
