Google Docs does not currently offer a dedicated page-border command. For an editable document, the most reliable workaround is a one-cell table whose outline looks like a page border. Use paragraph borders for a single text block, or a Drawing rectangle when the border is decorative. These workarounds frame the usable content area—not necessarily the paper’s physical edge.

Can Google Docs add a true page border?

As of August 2026, Google Docs has no documented control equivalent to Microsoft Word’s page-border feature. The border controls under Format > Paragraph styles > Borders and shading apply to the selected paragraph, not the entire page. Table outlines and Drawing shapes can create the same visual effect, but neither is attached to the page itself. See Google’s current Help Community guidance.

Best method: use a 1 × 1 table

This method keeps your text editable as normal Google Docs content and works best for certificates, worksheets, forms, and simple one-page designs.

  1. Open the document in Google Docs.
  2. Choose File > Page setup and select Pages, rather than Pageless. Set the paper size and margins.
  3. Choose Insert > Table, then select the first square to insert a 1 × 1 table.
  4. Click inside the cell and type or paste your content.
  5. Drag the table edges to enlarge it, leaving a consistent gap between the border and the page edges. The table can only occupy the usable area inside the page margins.
  6. Select a table edge or right-click inside the table. Use the table-border controls, or Table options (sometimes labeled Table properties), to set border color, width, and dash style.

Google’s table documentation confirms that tables can be resized and that their borders and cell formatting can be customized.

Make the table look like a page frame

  • Margins: In File > Page setup, reduce margins for a border closer to the edge, or increase them for a wider outside margin.
  • Cell padding: Increase padding in Table options so text does not touch the line. Reduce it if the table is pushing onto another page.
  • Border weight: Use a thin line for formal documents and a heavier line for signs or certificates.
  • Fill: Set the cell background to white if another page or layout color makes the interior look wrong.
  • One-page designs: Keep the content short enough that the bottom border stays on the intended page. A page break before or after the table can help.

A table is document content, not a permanent page frame. If its contents become longer than one page, the table can continue across page breaks. That creates a continuing table outline, not independently controlled borders on each page.

Border one paragraph or text block

Use a paragraph border for a warning, definition, callout, quotation, or short notice:

  1. Click in the paragraph, or select the paragraphs.
  2. Open Format > Paragraph styles > Borders and shading.
  3. Choose the sides to display.
  4. Set border color, width, dash style, background color, and padding.
  5. Click Apply.

This affects only the paragraph containing the cursor or selection; it cannot create a border around the whole page. Menu wording can vary by account, language, or interface update. The distinction is also described in Google’s Help Community.

Add borders to table cells

For an existing table, select one or more cells, open the table-border selector in the toolbar, and choose the edges to change. Set the border color, width, and dash style, and set a fill color if needed. This lets you keep an outside outline while removing interior lines, add only a bottom rule beneath a heading, or build a bordered information box. Individual cells can be formatted independently according to Google’s table help.

Create a decorative border with Drawing

A Drawing is better when appearance matters more than flowing text—for example, a title page, invitation, poster, or certificate.

  1. Choose Insert > Drawing > New.
  2. Open the Shape tool and choose a rectangle.
  3. Draw the rectangle around the intended content area.
  4. Set Fill color to transparent.
  5. Choose the line color, line weight, and optional dash style.
  6. Click Save and close.
  7. Select the inserted drawing and choose a suitable text-wrapping or positioning option, then resize and move it into place.

This gives you more visual control, including rounded or unusual shapes, but the rectangle is a movable graphic. It may need repositioning after layout changes, can interfere with text wrapping, and does not automatically repeat on every page. Guidance on this approach appears in Google’s page-border discussion.

Which method should you choose?

Goal Best choice Why
Editable text in a simple rectangular frame 1 × 1 table Text remains ordinary, editable document content.
Decorative certificate, invitation, or title page Drawing More control over shape, line style, and appearance.
Emphasize one note or section Paragraph border Does not disrupt the rest of the page layout.
Precisely repeating borders on many pages or edge-to-edge print Another layout application Google Docs lacks master-page and true page-frame controls.

Troubleshooting borders

The border is invisible

  • Check that the width is not 0 pt.
  • Choose a color that contrasts with the page background.
  • Select the correct table edge; changing one edge does not change all four.
  • Zoom in, reload the document, or open it in another browser to rule out a display glitch.

The line is too close to the text

Increase cell padding in Table options, add paragraph spacing inside the cell, or make the table slightly smaller.

The table spills onto another page

Reduce table height, padding, margins, or content; reflow the text; and consider a page break before the table. Remember that tables naturally flow as content.

The border does not reach the paper edge

Reduce the document margins and resize the table, but do not assume the printer can print to the edge. Many printers have non-printable areas even when the on-screen page appears to allow a smaller margin.

The Drawing covers the text

Select the Drawing and change its wrapping or position setting. Keep the fill transparent, move the object manually, and choose a mode that leaves the text readable.

Mobile controls are missing

The dependable workflow is Google Docs in a desktop browser. Mobile apps may let you view or edit tables, but the full set of border, Drawing, positioning, and page-layout controls may not appear in the same form. Google Docs does not provide a dedicated page-border command on mobile either.

Remove a border

  • 1 × 1 table: Delete the table, or set every edge to transparent or 0 pt if you need to preserve its text.
  • Paragraph: Return to Format > Paragraph styles > Borders and shading and turn off the active sides or reset the settings.
  • Drawing: Select the rectangle and press Delete.
